The plan includes Trefechan harbour showing its lime kilns and ship building ground. At this time Aberystwyth experienced a period of prosperity and expansion and was also an important ship building centre. The town’s maritime significance is also evident from its “Rope walk” and from the statistics which note that amongst a population of 4128 there were about 500 seamen. The harbour was sheltered by the shingle spit known as Ro-Fawr on which the quay was later constructed, this work beginning in 1836.
-
This plan includes Port Penrhyn, which was renowned for the export of slate quarried at Bethesda. The expansive area referenced “Mr Pennant’s property shown in brown” alludes to lands of the Penrhyn estate. An inset map of the district displays the borough and parish boundaries and includes the eastern portions of the Menai Straits, Menai Bridge and the newly built Penrhyn Castle
-
Brecon’s wards and parishes are clearly identified together with a long vanished race course between the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal and the River Usk. The inset map, bottom left, of the Borough of Brecon with the detached ward of Trecastle is based on R.K. Dawson’s Ordnance Survey map of 1832. Of the Welsh town plans, only on the Brecon plan is Wood described as “of Caernarvon” which possibly implies that he was resident there whilst preparing his Welsh plans.
-
Included is the well-known and once very busy Slate Quay. An atypical inset plan with index of the town (bottom right) “drawn in the Reign of Henry the Eighth, in the year 1530, & found in the possession of W.R. Jones, Caernarvon” is in fact an inset plan by John Speed which first appeared in his map of Caernarfonshire of 1610. Here, John Wood's original map of 1834 has been reworked, augmented and published by the printer H. Humphreys of Caernarfon.
-
Cardigan is coloured to show the Parish of St Mary’s with an inset map of the borough. Population statistics tell of an expanding town with an increase of some 400 in its population between 1821 and 1831.
-
This plan, the largest in the Library’s collection of Wood plans, includes the town’s Roman vestiges, wards, and its key to the parishes suggests that the map was intended to be coloured.
-
Newport, also at a time of much expansion, with a substantial area of proposed development outlined south of the town and showing one of the town’s first large enclosed docks on the site of the present Alexandra Docks. The population increase between 1831 and 1836 was estimated as 2,300. The borough, wards and parishes are shown and the Lord Lieutenant of Monmouthshire and local magistrates are named.
-
Oswestry with its wards includes an interesting manuscript plan in ink and watercolour showing the course of the railway and location of the station. Wood plans undoubtedly regularly served as convenient base plans for urban planning prior to the appearance of large scale Ordnance Survey sheets.
-
This plan of Pwllheli is a reduced copy of an original Wood plan.
