Geocoding

[edit]

The heading parameter tells which direction the camera was pointing at, making it much easier to browse images by location in busy ares, where you can see from the camera heading what the image contains before even seeing the image. It's used on the Google Earth Commons layer with an appropriate icon. There's more explanation and a few more parameters at Commons:Geocoding#Parameters. CANDU Reactor

[edit]

Hi there - thanks for your pointers on this at QIC. I've done the following:

I am happy to help you with that. I have done a web survey to try to come out with a "unified" CANDU representation. ;-)
Technically speaking, your drawing corresponds to the pressurized heavy water (PHW) cooled version of CANDU. It was the first type developed and is by far the most widely used. I made this clear in the description.
 • Added fuel loading machines
OK. Thanks
 • Changed the colour of the pressure vessels - you are right, I should have noticed that
I am afraid I am not made my self clear. The zircaloy pressure tubes, filled with nuclear fuel bundles, pass through a tank, namely the calandria, that can be made from conventional stainless steel. Therefore, I am not sure about the green square surrounding the calandria. Is it the calandria itself or its neutron-shielding concrete vault? If it is the calandria, then it should have a different colour from both the pressure tubes and the concrete. (see CANDU6 Reactor Assembly).
I would not draw the neutron-shielding concrete vault in a schematic drawing
 • Made the concrete walls a bit thinner and rounded. I think it's still important to have it to show which bits of the reactor are contained. (By the way, is the light water pump inside or outside the containment building. It makes sense for it to be there, so I moved it)
There are numerous concrete walls in a NPP. ;) I agree to draw schematically the main containment building. But I would then suggest to use the standard form for it: a rectangle with a rounded top. (please look at page 11 of the following doc How and Why is CANDU designed the way it is). IMHO, the heavy concretes walls draw the attention out of the main subject of the drawing, namely the nuclear island. A thick black line should be then enough. What do you think?
 • Added labels to the steam output and light water input. I kept the symbols too. I don't really want to show the electrcity generation side because surely that is a whole different concept - the layout of the compressors, intercoolers, etc isn't particularly to do with the fact that this is a CANDU reactor.
After reflexion, I agree with you. I will then adapt the legend to make it clearer. I would use the term light water condensate.
 • Fixed a blue hairline on the right of the outer heat exchanger pipe.
Haven't see it...

I've put a temporary version up here with these changes. Thanks! ⇒Inductiveloadτϲ17:33, 7 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

IMHO, one component is still missing although not 100% mandatory: the primary loop pressurizer. It is not always represented by specialists but for an encyclopedia I would add it. It makes more easy to understand why this reactor falls into the "pressurized heavy reactor" category. See here for an example: [1] (bottom left)

What do you think? Alberto Fernandez Fernandez 12:27, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, ⇒Inductiveloadτϲ00:13, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've done the following:
 • Changed the colour of the calandria to purple
OK
 • Made the walls thin and given a rounded top (I kept the green colour becuase it doesn't dominate like a thick black line)
It looks great!
 • Added the heavy water coolant pressuriser
Excellent.
The file can be found here.
I also noticed in this document that there is a heat exchanger and pump for the moderating heavy water. Do you think I should add that? It doesn't seem to be a part of the reactor that is essential to the mode of operation, but I can see a little space up in the top left I could put it in if you think it is a good idea.
I agree with you. This part is not essential to its mode of operation. IMHO, it is not necessary to add the moderator cooling circuit. It overloads the schematic.

I think the schematic is now complete and looks very professional. Excellent job! Let me know when final version is uploaded. I will update its legend accordingly. Thanks Alberto Fernandez Fernandez 07:23, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for all the help! The picture is now up here. Do you think it would make QI? ⇒Inductiveloadτϲ22:34, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's now up for QI. I might try to put in the electricity generation side to make a new SVG with everything, and maybe go for FP, but that may have to wait. Thanks again for your help. ⇒Inductiveloadτϲ14:06, 13 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Schneeberg geotag

[edit]

Geotag makes the picture available for Google earth?? --Beyond silence 22.5px 12:09, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is already the case for geotagged articles of Wikipedia.

Wikipedia + GE: please check Wikipedia on GE and this external blog [2]

You need to install a small extension of GE to do the same with Commons.

Load GeoCommons.kml in Google Earth and start browsing!
More info : Commons + GE: please check Geocommons

Any geotaged article, picture, media,... could be in principle visualized in GE. That's what a Geographic information system is about.

Tools are available to help you easily tagging your images in Commons, without having to alter your EXIF information. (I don't have a GPS yet ;-)).

Moreover, if you use firefox and the add-on "Operator" [3], you also have the possibility to connect your geotagged data to Google maps without leaving your browser. You will be entering the era of Microformats and Semantic web. In short, it is a kind of machine-readable web content.

Be careful Geotagging is very addictive... ;-) You do it once and you will do it for every picture you will upload ;-)) Hope this helps. Alberto Fernandez Fernandez 12:54, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks --Beyond silence 22.5px 19:26, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your QIC pano

[edit]

I've had another look at it. You are advancing on that pano hill. See COM:QIC for my comments. -- Slaunger 09:52, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not bad. If I feel it will not lead to information loss I usually downsample a little if I have problems with the noise (and I usually have). In your case I actually think you could downsample a little to get rid of some of the niose in the sky without loosing detail and/or use a little selective gaussian blurring (but be careful, set the contrast threshold low and do not go over a pixel radius of 3.0). However, you should not downsample to an extend, where you do not notice the motion blur in the leaves, as that will be too much. Panos can be done without a tripod. For instance I do not own a tripod, the most advanced substitute I have used is a stone. Besides that I think you have a QI, the composition is not breathtaking nor is the sharpness, but good enough I think. But give it a last try to reduce noise (in the sky) and maybe downsample a little. -- Slaunger 13:43, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Frescos

[edit]

Some of your frescos could easily be FPs except for one thing, they lack contrast. Compare:

A 10 second adjustment to the levels makes a large difference, there's a decent free program called [GIMP] you can do it with. I hate to see such wonderful pictures not realize their full potential. Calibas 02:23, 2 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you don't trust your monitor the levels command and the histogram usually give a pretty good idea of the contrast. Calibas 01:33, 15 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Afernand74!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Notification about possible deletion

[edit]
Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Political will to change the law in France

[edit]

Hi ! Actually, Wikimédia France (the French Wikimedia chapter), is currently lobbying to have a Freedom of panorama exception in France. See for instance this article in lemonde.fr by Rémi Mathis.

Gustav Klimt

[edit]

Thanks for the Gustav Klimt pic. One of my favourites. Could you possibly change the filename of the picture that you uploaded to "design" rather than "sketch". No work of art is a "sketch" if it took the artist more than 30 seconds to 10 minutes to do it, depending on the size and medium (i.e. an oil sketch or clay sketch takes longer than a pencil sketch. It is better to use either "drawing", "design" "preparatory study" or "water colour" or some such. Amandajm (talk) 02:22, 16 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Source information on one of your pictures

[edit]

Hi, There ist File:Karl-von-Hasenauer-1880-2.jpg where your name is committed as "author". In source we find as origin source "Stadtchronik Wien, Verlag Christian Brandstätter, page 307". Searching after "Stadtchronik Wien" makes clear, that there is no book easily to identify - in fact i didn't found any book, where page 307 corresponds in any way with the given time of 1880. While i don't own this book and can't even find it, i ask you: who was the original artist of this picture - who painted it? Chiron McAnndra (talk) 13:22, 24 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Tumb of ghobert d'aspremont 1283 villers.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Dear Afernand74,

You are receiving this message because we noticed that you voted in R1 of the 2018 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in the second round. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2018) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked.

In the final (and current) round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2018.
