[edit]Hi Borealis - saw you'd uploaded this Austrocedrus pic; unfortunately, it isn't PD-USGov, but a non-commercial only license "Commercial use must be disclosed to and conditions of use negotiated with the copyright holder" (here), a condition which makes the photo ineligible for Commons so it has to be deleted. Annoying I know, I've had to reject many other photos from the USDA Plants site for the same reason. The problem is that PD-USGov only applies if the photo was taken by a US Government employee as part of their official Government duties; if they took the photo in their private time outside of their working hours, copyright does apply. Presumably he took this photo on his holidays. Sorry to be bringing bad news, as it would otherwise be a very useful photo! - MPF (talk) 18:48, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

Lambert's Genus Pinus
[edit]Hi Borealis - nice idea to upload illustrations from this! One caution, a lot of the names have changed since 1832, it is worth checking the current name before uploading, so they go in the right categories, etc. I have updated the ones uploaded here so far. If there are any names you are not sure of, ask on my talk page and I can find out the current name - MPF (talk) 23:54, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 05:43, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open
[edit]Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:
- Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
- This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
- Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.
To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons
Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

~ Чръный человек (talk) 07:49, 31 May 2019 (UTC)
- To Чръный человек. Но знака авторского права © нет. Кому в данном случае принадлежат эти права? Вообще, распространяется ли авторское право на иконы? --Daphne mesereum (talk) 18:59, 31 May 2019 (UTC)
~ Чръный человек (talk) 19:16, 31 May 2019 (UTC)

Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2022, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again for a few minutes of your time. Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 150K+ pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 35 countries around the world.
You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet). To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey.
Please fill in this short survey and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2022.

File:Людогощенский крест.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |
