First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Thanks for the comment. I created most of them in Cat: Pdf files as there were none to a few when I started editing the Category. If you can read some of the foreign titles there and suggest some other categories I would appreciate it. I really don't understand why people up load photos and link them to something but almost every single pdf file has no connection to articles or galleries or categories. How do they expect users to find them?? Cheers. WayneRay 14:12, 1 June 2008 (UTC)WayneRay[reply]

Good day. As a result of your request at Commons talk:Flickr images/reviewers, I have added you to the reviewers list. Please see the instructions at Commons:Flickr images/reviewers and add User trusted to your userpage. You can ask me if you need any help. Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 12:38, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for your/the community's trust. I may indeed take you up on that offer for help/advice. Cirt (talk) 12:44, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Will look into it, thanks. Cirt ( ) 12:22, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Appreciated. Commons seems to get quite a bit of user page spam these days as en wp gets better at clearing stuff. I've just dealt with two this am. Useful to have cross wiki admins - something you may care to consider ;) Cheers --Herby talk thyme 12:25, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps at some point, sure. Cirt ( ) 12:26, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

On the same cross wiki issues, maybe worth looking around at Meta some if it is of interest to you. The BL can always use additional help and I've just posted on cross wiki user page promotion there (further up are other user page ones too). Equally the COI bot reports are a good way of getting into cross wiki link placement for example. No worries if it doesn't interest you but feel free to ask if you want any more info. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 11:35, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Organizing some images into this new category, feel free to change things, add/remove. I still do plan to do some work/addition of cites/info to the article back at en.wiki, at some point soon. Cheers, Cirt (talk) 09:27, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Shouldn't you be putting Category:Robert Christgau in Category:The Village Voice, rather than individual pictures of Christgau? - Jmabel ! talk 16:12, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you are correct, I had not noticed that, thank you. Cirt (talk) 16:19, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cirt, congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and Commons:Deletion requests), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons @ irc.freenode.net. Also consider joining #wikimedia-admin, the cross-wiki coordination channel for Wikimedia administrators. Any member of the channel can invite you in temporarily, but you need an invite exemption from a channel operator to get in whenever you want. Please come to #wikimedia and ask for an invite. Any admin from any project is welcome.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references....

Image:Kaart-haarlem.JPG

[edit]

You delinked this image from the Haarlem page, and I believe you deleted the file from Commons, though I am not sure. I don't think this file should be deleted, neither do I feel that I have infringed on a copyright violation, because the picture I took is in the public space, attached to the side of a shower building for watersporters. Pedestrian traffic passes the building. I can upload a larger image which shows the building in its entirety, but the map itself I found interesting as it shows some major touristic attractions of Haarlem. In principle all works communicated to the public by or on behalf of the public authorities (government) are not copyright protected in the Netherlands, unless the copyright has been reserved explicitly, either in a general manner by law, decree or ordinance, or in a specific case by a notice on the work itself or at the communication to the public. I am also surprised that the file has been deleted without nomination. - Jane023 (talk) 10:23, 31 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Note: Jane023 (talk · contribs) restored the image which was original deleted as copyvio, without waiting for a response. I was going to restore the image and send to DR, which I have just done anyway. Discussion is here Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Kaart-haarlem.JPG. Cirt (talk) 18:03, 31 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
H Cirt, Thanks for your visit, this is slowly starting to make sense to me. I clicked on a "purge" tab. Does this undelete an entry? If so, I didn't see this tab before and I would have clicked it if I could without bothering three people! Please let me know so I can better respond in the future to these actions. Jane023 (talk) 18:09, 31 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nope, didn't re-upload the image. I was told that you can always undelete, so you never need to re-upload an image. As far as I know, both images are still invisible to me (I can't see them, but maybe you can).Jane023 (talk) 19:35, 31 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I see now that my comment was on the upload page. That's OK, since I still don't understand why it got deleted. I guess it is still up for deletion now, and is just on the nomination page. Am I correct? How long do I have to wait before I repair the links? Jane023 (talk) 21:10, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your signature

[edit]

Hi, I noticed your signature repeats itself: Cirt Cirt; I think that's a recent change and I'm guessing it's not intentional. Cheers --Jeremyb (talk) 07:42, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, it's not my signature. I just accidentally copied/pasted some text from something else, which had my username/talkpage links in it, and then added my signature after that on a few pages. But thanks for pointing it out. Cheers, Cirt (talk) 07:53, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

All fixed now. Cirt (talk) 07:55, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ahh, OK. --Jeremyb (talk) 08:07, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This copy appears to be gone due to Commons:Village pump#Massive image loss. I see you were the initial uploader of the image, perhaps you could reupload another copy? Cirt (talk) 10:06, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I renamed the image. My sysop flag was removed since so I cannot access the deleted copy. -- Cat ちぃ? 12:19, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
Um, the deleted copy was not actually deleted, it was lost in some sort of server hiccup. Where did you rename the image? Couldn't you just upload a better version over the current version at Image:Editors Barnstar.png and I could then delete the lower res versions? Cirt (talk) 17:14, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I really do not remember. I am completely disoriented on the matter. -- Cat ちぃ? 22:35, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

This seems to be quite a questionable template. The UN maps website has had a prominent copyright notice since at least 1999, judging by archive.org. Who granted this supposed permission? Did they really have the authority to do so? Could you review the OTRS email referenced there? 24.128.49.25 18:48, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes the OTRS information appears to be valid with permission from a valid source. Cirt (talk) 22:20, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Right to vanish?

[edit]

Hi Cirt,

I guess you are the same Cirt who edits in wikipedia and was recently elected as admin. Could you please make me a favor? I would like to "disappear" from Wikimedia Commons. Would it be possible to delete my user page, talk page, and the checkuser report? All my downloads would stay. What I really do not like is this checkuser report that appears when someone is making Google search with my name. I sincerely wanted to contribute here, but this did not work very well, unfortunately.

Thank you very much for help,

Andrei Lomize (talk) 23:04, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I see Cirt has deleted your user and talk page already. I'm not sure that deleting the CU case is a good idea. It was relatively minor but we tend not to do that. I would say to you that you do not have to vanish if you don't want to... we are a forgiving sort of place... keep contributing, don't sock any more, and all will be well. Hope that helps. ++Lar: t/c 23:15, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

redirecting

[edit]

Hi. I was wandering why you're making galleries redirect to categories. I was understanding that is convention to allow galleries and categories to co-exist with one another, and we should not systematically eliminate galleries. Commons:Categories#Categories and/or galleries? seems to accept both systems. Normally, one would put the gallery in the specific category, and leave it at that. Also, I'm not sure that we should be doing cross name space redirects. Maybe there's been some policy/practice I'm unaware of. If so, I'm happy to be corrected. --Rob (talk) 15:50, 20 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, it seemed like it was being done systematically, so I thought I should say something. It may well be appropriate to do what you did, I was just wanting to see some discussion and consensus before it was done on a mass scale. Since you're not intending to do it on a mass scale, I think it's no big deal. So, consider my concern dropped. --Rob (talk) 21:10, 20 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Open proxies

[edit]

I'd appreciate you reviewing what others do on these. It is extremely rare for projects to block an IP indefinitely. IPs are not truly static over time - a company may have an IP, change provider & get another IP, compromised machine get fixed etc etc. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 18:43, 21 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, the majority of these IPs that I had blocked recently were already blocked as open proxies on other projects, often by checkusers. Cirt (talk) 18:52, 21 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
CU wise I understand that - however on larger projects/meta etc I have very rarely seen indefinite blocks - - IPs really are not that static. Can you point me to them on en wp or meta say? Thanks --Herby talk thyme 19:44, 21 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
 1. indef block on an open proxy by a en.wiki CU, and again
 2. indef block on an open proxy by a different en.wiki CU
 3. indef block on an open proxy by a en.wikinews CU

Cirt (talk) 20:38, 21 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough & thanks. Personally I think indef blocks of IPs are irresponsible & show a lack of understanding of the internet & the way it works :) Such blocks are very rare believe me.
One day those IPs will be someone else's & I know what it is like to get an IP unblocked once it is blocked - people can be a little unbelieving! Thanks for your patience & links - I'll keep doing what I do I think. --Herby talk thyme 06:51, 22 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. Thank you for being so polite about this during discussion, much appreciated, as always. Cheers, Cirt (talk) 16:08, 22 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hey - we all need to work together. Not agreeing on something is not a crime. I appreciate the work you do! FWIW there is now a thread on the CU list so we will see where it goes. If luxo is working this is the one I used as an eg. The blocks vary quite widely from project to project (& I am not saying they all should be the same - "easier to herd cats" was the phrase I used!), I'd just like a feel for why folk feel different - that way we all learn. Regards --Herby talk thyme 16:17, 22 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah quite. Well, as I don't have access to the CU list, I will have let the CUs discuss that one and see what comes out of that. I still maintain my agreement with the duration of blocks given by the 3 other CUs, that I linked above. Cirt (talk) 16:31, 22 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Just realised the above might not quite read the way I intended - you have mail :) Regards --Herby talk thyme 18:18, 22 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your trust

Dear Cirt,
^v^
^v^
Thank you for your support on my request for adminship, here at Commons. Now that I am a new sysop, I plan on starting small, closing obvious (to my eye) deletion requests at first, getting bolder with experience as and when my contributions here intensify. As a contributor, I look forward acquiring professional photography/video skills and equipment, that will allow me, one day, to proudly help Commons to be better (I would like to obtain my Master's degree while in Antarctica, more free videos and photos of this place would be truly great). Waiting for this moment to happen, let me address you once again my warmest thanks for your trust and your support in my successful request for adminship, that received 100% of  support votes.
I do feel the tools given to me will be useful for the project as well as, obviously, for me. And even for you: besides questions regarding templates (about parser functions for example) and licensing, I will be henceforth there at any moment to perform administrative tasks like deletions, interventions on protected pages, and the like. You just have to ask me on my talk page or by IRC at #wikimedia-commons, and I will normally be glad to honor your request.

Blocks

[edit]

Can you please make sure there is a rationale on blocks. You blocked some IPs (& a range) without any info. This is not helpful to those who may be blocked or people here. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 09:14, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

67.222.12.0/22 -> Net2EZ open proxies
68.184.150.94 -> Open proxy
67.212.67.74 -> However this one is a closed proxy, it's like the hidemyip software I think
65.19.143.2 -> Open proxy
However it seems like Cirt changed the block, before that he had given the reason that they were proxies. --Kanonkas(talk) 10:15, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Happy Holidays!

[edit]

Merry Christmas, hope you have a nice one Cirt! --Kanonkas(talk) 00:16, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Here is some spam ;)

File:Wikisanta.jpg

Kanonkas(talk) would like to take this opportunity to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I really do hope this can make your day slightly better, and if it has done, feel free to pass on the WikiLove to anyone you like! :) Friends, random people, and even those you've had disagreements with. Christmas is, after all, a time to forgive any past actions, and move on from them. Again, happy holidays to you all!

Thanks for the Christmas review!

[edit]

Hi Cirt. I would like to thank you for the interest you have shown in my request for adminship, and for the time you have taken to review my profile. As a Christmas present I've just been given the admin tools, for which I'm thankful as well. I have understood all the remarks that have been made during the review period. I will take them into account and begin using the tools with much care, until I gain more experience and self-confidence. Thanks again, and Merry Christmas! --Eusebius (talk) 15:12, 25 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank You

[edit]

Hi Cirt, I would like to express my gratitude for your participation at my recent RfA, which succeeded with an overwhelming final count of 100 % support. I'm happy that so many people have put faith in my abilities as an admin and I promise to use the tools wisely and do my best not to let you down. Please do feel free to get in touch if you feel you can improve me in any way; I will be glad to listen to all comments. Again, thanks,Abigor talk 17:45, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

...for the RFB support. --MichaelMaggs (talk) 09:27, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You're certainly entitled to your opinion

[edit]

...but can you explain to me why the images here and here were kept? I saw no explanation beyond, "they did XYZ and that makes it PD"; no law was cited; no policy was cited. No one is saying you are wrong, but when the artist claims copyright over said image and there is no evidence he gave up that right (other than an editor's claim that it "just is"), why keep? 68.213.169.171 17:38, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Consensus was to Keep, and I agreed with the rationale and explanations laid out by those that expressed a Keep position. Cirt (talk) 17:43, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
But there is nothing in policy or law which states these are PD images. Why assume they are PD? 68.213.169.171 18:41, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You are continuing a discussion which is already effectively closed after consensus from the community in two different locations (and your talk page, prior to that). Cirt (talk) 19:03, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
But no one has answered that question? I'm confused. 68.213.169.171 23:31, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Again: The matter regarding your concerns has already been sufficiently addressed by the community. Pushing this point further still is not constructive. Cirt (talk) 00:19, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not trying to push a point. I'm trying to get a clear answer. "It's already been explained" doesn't answer the questions "Where does it say in policy, guideline, or law that such images/works are PD?" and "Why is that assumption being made here?" 68.213.169.171 00:36, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
My talk page is not an appropriate forum to continue this discussion. Please stop. Cirt (talk) 01:03, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, then please tell me where an "appropriate forum" exists where I can get an answer. I'll be happy to go there. 68.213.169.171 03:13, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Again: As you full well know, this was previously discussed in two different deletion discussions. Cirt (talk) 06:21, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
So just "shut up?" 68.213.169.171 19:04, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Closing summary

[edit]

Is there any way we could get a closing summary on Commons:Deletion requests/File:Zarqawi dead us govt photo.jpg?--Prosfilaes (talk) 19:11, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I determined that consensus was to keep. I also think that the keep rationales made cogent points. Cirt (talk) 19:39, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Categories by country

[edit]

I corrected "Belgium "anonymous" ..." as this was a spellinge error (should be Belgian "anonymous"). Please use standard by country naming, i.e. xxx in/of/from country as this avoids language problems and allows for furthet disambiguation (I.e. Georgia state or country). Thank you. --Foroa (talk) 15:16, 1 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but when I noticed the category with a spelling error and against the Commons naming rule, it was the only category existing then. Blatant errors and commons naming rules are changed without discussions. For the "De facto" standards, see Category:Categories by country. --Foroa (talk) 15:25, 1 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there Cirt. Thank you for your efforts to clarify the issues raised by this deletion request. The work you have done has confirmed that the music and the video footage are freely licensed and as such I consider the problems outlined in the deletion nomination to have been addressed and so I've closed it as keep. I would though emphasise the importance of not only seeking a free license for content but also ensuring the creator is in a position to release the content under such a license. I therefore remain disappointed by the number of users who voted keep before this could be confirmed. The important thing to note is that many creators of content are not aware of all the legal issues related to derivative works etc. Again, thank you for persisting despite the hurdles to ensure we can host this content on Commons. It is especially worthwhile because I think it could be considered as one of the foundations of the Project Chanology campaign against Scientology and so has a high educational value. Regards. Oh man, I hit the tip of the iceberg. Looks like virtually all copyright tags is not following this convention. While some language templates are not protected, unfortunately the majority are indeed protected. I'll pass the list to you when I got them finished. (Wish I could be admin and fix all of them myself) OhanaUnitedTalk page 17:42, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, for now, in Template:PD-US/lang, add a new row for zh-hant. OhanaUnitedTalk page 18:25, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done. Should I change the previous template (Template:PD-author/lang) and re-add zh-tw? --Kanonkas(talk) 18:31, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Nope. That's a little bit of overdoing it. Zh-hant and zh-hans are the 2 "recognized" language codes that should be used. If you try go to meta's main page, under "Meta in many languages", you can only find those 2, and not others. Zh-hant includes zh-hk, zh-mo, and zh-tw. Zh-hans includes zh-cn, zh-my, and zh-sg. Razzies video

[edit]

First thanks for the videos, Boll realy deserve this honor. Call it copyright paranoia, but I would call some parts of the sounds a derivative work, especially the opening scene. --Martin H. (talk) 23:08, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File:2009 Razzies Opening Number.ogv, derivative of Dacing Queen. Maybe they obtain permission from Abba to use the melodie - or they paid some fee, i dont know how this is ruled in the US, but it would be hard to create any derivatives on this file again, e.g. extracting the music, without violating copyright. --Martin H. (talk) 23:14, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yes, I think so, regretably I dont know how to edit videos, otherwise i would have cropped the sound myself. --Martin H. (talk) 23:28, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mass OTRS permission

[edit]

Hi, I have permission to use images found on this site. I'll need to use OTRS to authorise the permission - is there anyway the copyright holder can provide one email to authorise the use of all of the images and then I can just use the same permission again and again when I upload them? Thanks Smartse (talk) 19:25, 10 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Do I just get one ticket then and it is then ok for all the images? Sorry - this is a little confusing! Smartse (talk) 19:28, 10 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Cirt!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Rename request

Hi, can you rename File:Unknown Nephila spider.JPG as File:Nephila clavipes BCI.JPG please? Thanks Smartse (talk) 22:20, 12 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Also could you take a look at File:Malphigian.svg - the image is blank for some reason, someone fixed it by uploading it under a different name but it would be useful to know why this happened so I don't make the same mistake again! Smartse (talk) 22:20, 12 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Did the first one, and for the second, sometimes SVGs just show up like that, but if you click on it, they are still there. :) Cirt (talk) 16:08, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Small problem

[edit]

Looks like the FileUploadBot added File:Doctor Who friends.jpg from Christine Van Assche. As far as I can tell, these aren't free images, and she's tagged a bunch on her flickr account by mistake. Although I'm not certain, it looks like an official promo photo and should probably be deleted. I suppose that would include File:Tenth Doctor head collar.jpg as well. Someone might want to look into this before deleting them both. Viriditas (talk) 08:51, 7 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure, but I believe the answer is yes. I looked into this several weeks ago, but forgot about it until I saw you had added it to Commons. The big red flag is the fact the flickr user in question uses the same permission for obviously non-free images in her photostream. This tells me the images don't belong to her. Viriditas (talk) 10:16, 7 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, found it.[1] She stole it from the BBC. Viriditas (talk) 10:20, 7 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Sun-Myung-Moon-Prayer.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Sun-Myung-Moon-Prayer.jpg) and the above demanded information in your request.
