Remember you said to me about the flag location categories?

I am going to request a huge cleanup in the village pump and possibly creating a userpage for anyone who is categorizing images of flags with a set of rules. SpinnerLaserz (talk) 02:54, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

SpinnerLaserz, understood. You could propose a set of standards there and get community feedback. Huntster (t @ c) 04:15, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

THANK YOU!!!!!

@Huntster: I'm so proud of you for blocking that dude that insulted my favorite typeface!

p.s. He called me a SHE for no apparent reason at all. User:The SVG Effect 21:32, 27 June 2020

DRs

Hi Huntster, Thanks for your swift action with the IP, Just wondering but do the IPs DRs really need to be kept?,
In this specific case he's obviously a troll so I don't see why the DRs should continue to remain?, Obviously if that was a well-intentioned editor who made an incorrect DR then I'd agree with keeping but troll IPs is where I draw the line,
Obviously you're the admin and you know best :),
Thanks again for your swift action it's much appreciated, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 01:33, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

Davey2010, I'm working my way through them. I'm just old and slow. Huntster (t @ c) 01:34, 28 June 2020 (UTC)
Hi, Oh no sorry I wasn't asking you to close them - I was basically asking if they should be deleted instead ?, Many thanks, –Davey2010Talk 01:35, 28 June 2020 (UTC)
Davey2010, there's no real reason to delete them. I'm simply closing as no valid rationale for deletion. Huntster (t @ c) 01:37, 28 June 2020 (UTC)
I 110% unequivocally disagree with that but then again I pretty much disagree with every Commons policy there is (when it comes to trolls/socks) so I will say no more, Thanks again for your help, Take care, –Davey2010Talk 01:40, 28 June 2020 (UTC)
Davey2010, you are welcome to request this at the admin board or elsewhere, it simply isn't a step I'm willing to take at this time. Huntster (t @ c) 01:42, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

Blocking of IP

Hello Hunster. Thanks for your work on anti-vandalism. However, I see you block 2a04:4a43:4c7f:a7dc:a458:d936:1fad:d4c2 (talk · contributions · Statistics · Recent activity · block log · User rights log · uploads · Global account information) indefinitely. Though the disruption made by the IP is rather huge, it is not appropriate to block an IP address indefinitely. Because it may hurt other innocent user and they cannot edit Commons forever. Maybe a blocking length of six months or a year would be better, regards. --A1Cafel (talk) 06:21, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

This is an individual IPv6 address, not a range, so has extremely low likelihood of impinging on any other user. I'll dial back to six months, though, so it does eventually clear. Huntster (t @ c) 05:11, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

Sorry to bother you. I made a gallery dedicated to flags, I had added a disclaimer about incidental images of flags. Is this a okay disclaimer or it needs work? SpinnerLaserz (talk) 02:41, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

SpinnerLaserz, I don't suppose I see anything wrong with the disclaimer, though I'm not sure how necessary it is considering its a personal user page. IMO it would only be an issue if, for some reason, it was relocated as a main gallery page. Also, for your thin line page, I'd like to mention that the flag for dispatchers was originally the yellow one (being a primary color to match up with blue and red), but since it became so commonly co-oped by other types, the gold line has become the defacto flag for dispatchers for some time now. Some links with other examples you might find of interest: https://stevenstacticalshop.com/thin-lines and https://www.flagandbanner.com/flags/thin-line-flags-faq.asp. Huntster (t @ c) 06:20, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. I had to be sure. SpinnerLaserz (talk) 06:58, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
@Huntster: I think me adding of flag categories to the incidental pictures is a extemely huge misunderstanding of COM:CAT. SpinnerLaserz (talk) 20:04, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
I'm really not sure what you're trying to say here. What part is the misunderstanding? Don't add flag categories to images that incidentally feature a flag in them, just as you wouldn't add a category about windows simply because one happened to be present in a shot. Huntster (t @ c) 07:24, 4 July 2020 (UTC)

Asteroid Bennu video ok?

Hope you're doing well - if possible - maybe take a look at my newly uploaded video file => File:PIA24101-AsteroidBennu-ParticleEjectionEvents.webm - to be sure all's ok - seems it may be NASA pd but not *entirely* sure at the moment - Thanks in any regards - Stay Safe and Healthy !! - Drbogdan (talk) 13:24, 12 September 2020 (UTC)

Drbogdan, it looks fine. Marina Brozović is a NASA scientist at JPL. Please be more judicious with adding categories, though; the Bennu category you added was for the mythological bird, not the asteroid. Huntster (t @ c) 03:20, 13 September 2020 (UTC)

Not clear at the moment if the following NASA Jupiter flyover video animation is completely ok or not => File:PIA23807-PlanetJupiter-FlyOver-Animation-20200602.webm - the video file has not yet been added to any Wikipedia articles, including the planet Jupiter article - Thanking you in advance for your help with this - iac - Stay Safe and Healthy !! - Drbogdan (talk) 11:58, 9 October 2020 (UTC)

Drbogdan, so the Junocam material can be a little tricky from two angles. First, the image processing itself is not PD-NASA, which is indicated by "NASA/JPL-Caltech/SwRI/MSSS/Kevin M. Gill © CC BY". If you visit the original source page at https://www.missionjuno.swri.edu/junocam/processing?id=8763 (which does require a little searching), you'll find the license for this video is {{Cc-by-3.0}}. The second part is the music by Vangelis, which may be licensed for use by NASA but is not free. This is, unfortunately, also not apparent. When you are converting these types of things to WebM or whatever (really, any NASA video with third party music), I *strongly* encourage you to completely cut out the audio track unless it's clearly indicated the music is freely licensed. I'll go ahead and upload the new version, it'll just take a bit to get it converted.
Also I have to fuss again about categorization. Please take a little more time to get your uploads properly sorted. "Category:Animated films" doesn't apply here and "Category:Flyover" isn't even a valid category. I've applied a new set. See [1] for changes. Huntster (t @ c) 16:40, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
Thank you *very much* for your *excellent* comments, efforts and help with this - I thought of removing the audio track, but thought I might wait and see first what you might think about the video overall - I'm trying to add the proper cats, and will try to do this better - seems to be a bit of a challenge for me these days for some reason - in any case - Thanks again - your efforts and all are *greatly* appreciated - Stay Safe and Healthy !! - `Drbogdan (talk) 16:58, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
Drbogdan, finally got the replacement file uploaded after much frustration with conversion software, lol. Huntster (t @ c) 23:51, 9 October 2020 (UTC)

@Huntster: FWIW - Thanks again for your help with this - Note: for my part, I used the following program => "Avidemux" (v2.7.6/64-latest) at ( https://www.Avidemux.org => http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/ ) to remove the audio track from the original MP4 file - then converted the resulting MP4 file to a WEBM file using "XMedia Recode" (v3.4.4.8 => this older version is *better* than the more recent ones imo) ( https://www.videohelp.com/download/XMediaRecode3448.zip - or - https://www.videohelp.com/software/XMedia-Recode/old-versions ) - this process seems to work very well for me (pc => Dell8930/WinTel-10) - hope this helps - iac - Stay Safe and Healthy !! - Drbogdan (talk) 01:28, 10 October 2020 (UTC)

Drbogdan, thanks for the tip! I'll be giving that a test drive just as soon as I'm back home. Huntster (t @ c) 13:23, 10 October 2020 (UTC)

Image use question

Hi Huntster. There seems to be no good image of a constellationfish, one of the two major species of it, Valenciennellus tripunctulatus.

I found this site (fishesofaustralia.net.au) and in the second image in the gallery, it hosts a CC with attribution/share alike illustration I'd like to use in the WP article. The quotation on the illustration is: "Illustration of a Constellationfish, Valenciennellus tripunctulatus. Source: Marion J. Johnson / USNM. License: CC BY Attribution-Noncommercial-ShareAlike"

Would this mean it could be usable on Wikipedia? Or is there some other rulz that keep Wikimedia from hosting a copy of this excellent illustration?

Thanks. 97.118.132.19 17:14, 26 October 2020 (UTC)

97.118.132.19, so unfortunately, Commons cannot host files marked as "NonCommercial" (NC) or "NoDerivatives" (ND), because those licenses are too restrictive for re-use. What you could potentially do is upload the file locally at en.wiki under Fair Use rules, since no freely licensed images are available. Some links for you: Commons:Licensing for what licenses are acceptable on Commons; and Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline for fair-use image requirements on en.wiki. Those should get you started, but please let me know if you have any specific questions. Huntster (t @ c) 17:59, 26 October 2020 (UTC)

Che Guevara Picture

The picture of Che Guevara has beeen edited by using an AI app called Remini, that you can find on the google play store. it increases the size of the photo, at the loss of details on clothing and the increasing of detail on the face, most noticeale on the eyes. While this is nice on paper, its distorting an historical image. For example this is the original image https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a1/Heroico1.jpg while this is the AI touched up edit https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/58/CheHigh.jpg/468px-CheHigh.jpg you can see the difference by looking at the star on his barret, his eyes and his nose. if anything, it atleast messes up the permissions of the image, and while remini offers free useage, the licensing now is all wrong — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hellbat31 (talk • contribs) 14:34, 25 January 2021‎ (UTC)

Hellbat31, I would actually suggest you take this to Commons:Deletion requests. Lay out specifically what you feel is going on, what the licensing impact is, and which versions of the file need to be removed. This will allow a wider audience to be involved to voice opinions. If you need any help, let me know. Huntster (t @ c) 20:43, 25 January 2021 (UTC)

Video Upload size limit?

Tried to upload the NASA "Perseverance" rover landing video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4czjS9h4Fpg ) (3:25; 02/18/2021) - 54,655 KB size as "NASA-MarsPerseveranceRover-Descent-Touchdown-20210218.webm" - but the Wkipedia video upload failed - twice - "NASA-MarsPerseveranceRover-Descent-Touchdown-20210218.webm - The server did not respond within the expected time" - for some reason - perhaps the video file is too large? - Comments Welcome if possible - iac - Stay Safe and Healthy !! - Drbogdan (talk) 21:51, 22 February 2021 (UTC)

Drbogdan, I'm still at work (busy day in dispatch) at the moment, hopefully home soon and I'll investigate and try to upload, if it hasn't already been done. Huntster (t @ c) 22:14, 22 February 2021 (UTC)

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that the image Merritt Island sandhill cranes at KSC (KSC-20210324-PH-JBS02 0023).jpg, which was created or uploaded by you, has been nominated for featured picture status; have a look at the nomination page. Thank you and good luck! -- Askeuhd (talk) 07:46, 3 April 2021 (UTC)

SpaceX licensing

Hello Huntster! I thought you might have a bright answer to my question; SpaceX-credited photos hosted on NASA websites such as this one [2] would be expected to by CC-BY-NC like their Flickr images, right? And as such inadmissible to Commons? Thanks in advance, and have a nice weekend. Askeuhd (talk) 08:17, 3 April 2021 (UTC)

Askeuhd, SpaceX images hosted on NASA.gov would be expected to be All Rights Reserved unless they are hosted elsewhere under a specific license (like Flickr), or unless they had previously fallen under the stipulation of {{Cc-zero-SpaceX}}. That template used to apply to their Flickr images, but now only applies to images hosted on SpaceX.com and those images that were transferred to Commons from Flickr prior to July 2018 (when they mass-changed their Flickr license). The situation is not entirely clear-cut. Huntster (t @ c) 09:49, 3 April 2021 (UTC)
I see. That is maybe the first frustrating aspect of the commercialization of spaceflight I have come across :-) I will leave these files alone for now. But thank you for your help as always. Askeuhd (talk) 10:08, 3 April 2021 (UTC)
Askeuhd, agreed. Trying to figure out what files on NASA.gov are okay to upload and which aren't can be a massive headache. If you ever have a question about a specific file on there, let me know. Huntster (t @ c) 03:24, 4 April 2021 (UTC)

@Huntster and Ahecht: AFAIK - Seems this NASA video is *entirely* ok for Wikipedia - it's primarily presented by NASA in the same manner as so many other NASA images and videos uploaded to Wikipedia over the years - but, nonetheless, the video seems to be challenged otherwise instead - any help clarifying the issue would be greatly appreciated - Thanks in any case - and - Stay Safe and Healthy !! - Drbogdan (talk) 19:39, 19 April 2021 (UTC)

I flagged it mainly due to the use of the YouTube standard license (although using https://mars.nasa.gov/resources/25828/first-video-of-nasas-ingenuity-mars-helicopter-in-flight/ as a source would get around that), as well as crediting it to MSSS, which notoriously licenses their images under a non-commercial license (see http://www.msss.com/policies/index.html, although that page doesn't call out the cameras on Perseverance). Ahecht (TALK
PAGE
) 19:48, 19 April 2021 (UTC)
Ahecht, as a general rule of thumb, if the credit format is joined like "NASA/center/other/other", that is considered a blanket NASA credit. When it comes in the form of "NASA/center & other" or another unjoined form, then those other entities are being credited separately with their own copyright claim to it. (Sorry if you're already familiar with this, just pointing it out.) Huntster (t @ c) 19:57, 19 April 2021 (UTC)

Image (duplicate?) may need attention

Seems "File:Perseverance Rover seen in Ingenuity's aerial paronoma during it's third flight.jpg" is a duplicate of an earlier uploaded higher resolution image file => see "File:PIA24625-MarsIngenuityHelicopterViewsPerseveranceRoverFromAir-20210425a.jpg" - may need a bit of attention to sort this out? - iac - Stay Safe and Healthy !! - Drbogdan (talk) 18:40, 28 April 2021 (UTC)

Drbogdan, it's been handled. In the future, you can simply use {{Duplicate}} on the file to be deleted when it is an exact or scaled-down exact copy of another image. FYI, common practice if two images are identical in size is to keep the one that's of highest quality, and if that difference is negligible, whichever one was uploaded first. Huntster (t @ c) 18:58, 28 April 2021 (UTC)
@Huntster: - Thank you for your comments - and help with this - it's appreciated - as it turns out, I tried several templates re speedy deletion (at en:WP:Speedy deletes including those that may be re duplicate files, ie, { {Db-redundantfile|replacement file name.ext}} and { {Db-f8}}) - but, for some reason, the templates did not seem to work for me at the time - may have been my computer - or something on the Wikipedia server(s) - I didn't try { {Duplicate}} but will try to remember if this happens again - Thanks again for your help - and - Stay Safe and Healthy !! File:2016 Billie Swalla cropped.png

Hi,

File:2016 Billie Swalla cropped.png was previously nominated and kept per Commons:Deletion requests/File:2016 Billie Swalla cropped.png by you. I was going to nominate this for deletion, but there are instructions that I contact the keeping admin before proceeding. The image is from the University of Washington and used on the subject's bio. The image is marked as own work but the deletion discussion makes it clear that this is not the uploader's own work and was recieved via email from the subject who is also very unlikely to the copyright holder. What should the next step be? Should I tag it for lacking permission with an explanation on the talk page? Thanks. -- Whpq (talk) 17:33, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

Whpq, thanks for reaching out. Since you have evidence this image is a copyright violation, please feel free to send it to deletion requests again. Huntster (t @ c) 22:57, 29 April 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for getting back so soon. I've done as you suggested and nominated the image for deletion. -- Whpq (talk) 23:07, 29 April 2021 (UTC)
