Interlanguage links
[edit]Hi, I wanted to ask why you put interlanguage links on Commons image pages to non-identical image files on Wikipedias. Hekerui (talk) 23:10, 7 July 2012 (UTC)
- Hi, I want to create connections. To hint authors that potentially other variants are avaialble, sometimes better by format, sometimes by quality. Maybe also a local WP version could be substituted by the commons version, sometimes way around. Overall, my motivation is "awareness" of variants. cheers Shaddim (talk) 09:11, 8 July 2012 (UTC)
- PS: specifically the myst file connection I find valuable. The local de:WP version is superior compared to the commons one. cheersShaddim (talk)
- PPS: interwikilinks are not a mechnism to connect "duplicates", they connect the same topics. Therefore (technically, legal status etc) varying logos on the the same subject are perfectly fine to be connect by that mechanism. Shaddim (talk) 09:16, 8 July 2012 (UTC)
- That is not what interlanguage links are used for, because images are not "topics". If you find a superior version of a Commons file then upload it to the Commons, don't use language links. Hekerui (talk) 16:27, 13 July 2012 (UTC)
- I disagree, interwiki links are not meant for linking duplicate files they linking topics/concepts (see usage on wikipedia). The specific topic here are files, which might have varying quality, format and license. Also, your hint on uploading is shortsighted: you can't upload always to commons for license reasons, nor can you "overwritte" an inferior png with a superior svg. cheers. Copyright status: File:Screen00045.png
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Screen00045.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

File:Food pyramid Japan crop.png nominated for speedy deletion
[edit]Hi there,
I have nominated your upload of another user's Flickr image, File:Food pyramid Japan crop.png, for speedy deletion. The reason is that I think it is an (unintentional) copyright violation.
I realise that you uploaded this in good faith, and that the original Flickr probably did not intentionally mis-license it, but we have to be careful about things like this. Many Flickr users don't understand (or don't care) that they don't have the right to license certain things under those terms. In this case it is a derivative of a copyrighted work because the content of the (copyrighted) poster is the primary subject. (*If* the poster was clearly *not* the main subject de minimis would apply, but it doesn't).
The reason given for the speedy deletion nomination is:-
- Copyvio. The original Flickr image has been cropped, but the original makes clearer that this is a photograph of a poster. In all probability, the original Flickr user does not have the right to license the image in that way (it is not de minimis as the poster is the subject) and hence this cropped derivative version is also a copyvio.
Thank you for your understanding. All the best,
Ubcule (talk) 23:39, 20 September 2013 (UTC)

File tagging File:Ryzom logo.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:Ryzom logo.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you. |

Wrong license and source.
[edit]
Pay attention to licensing
|
Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content: images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose.
File:Creative commons license spectrum.svg seems to be free (or it would be proposed for deletion), but it was identified as having a wrong license. Usually, it is because a public domain image is tagged with a free license, or because the stated source or other information is not sufficient to prove the selected tag is correct. Please verify that you applied the correct license tag for this file. If you believe this file has the correct license, please explain why on the file discussion page.

Elvey (talk) 06:08, 20 April 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Elevey, the situation is not clear to me can you please elaborate? your commetn was "yet another cc logo mis-marked as cc-licensed." What do you mean with mismarked? The logos might be trademarked but are either trivial "below treshold of orriginality" or CC. What is the problem? cheers Shaddim (talk) 10:02, 20 April 2016 (UTC)
- As I said, "yet another cc logo mis-marked as cc-licensed". The logos aren't CC-licensed. You can argue that they are "below treshold of originality" and mark them as such (example 1 example 2 - edit summary: "Creative Commons excludes "all of the Creative Commons license and public domain buttons and icons" from CC-licensing.- one of some 100 such/related edits). Please don't argue that they're CC-licensed, because that's been discussed ad nauseam (see previous link), so respect the precedent. We have consensus that some of the logos in this upload of yours don't meet ToO, but for some of them, I think there's no consensus - and it's a stretch.
- You claim that https://creativecommons.org/about/downloads/ is the source, but this image does not exist there. Where did you get it? Since the logos are trademarked, you should tag the image to note this. Will you fix the sourcing, licensing and trademark issues? And make more of an effort to spell correctly? --Elvey (talk) 18:20, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
- I still don't get your point: trademark has nothing to do with copyright, and we have already a big amount of trademarked logos in the commons, no problem. Also, the individual logos are not above the threshold of originality. Also, on which discussion do you refer? And as remark to you, could finally for the first time link to one of them instead of other things? EDIT: and if the individual stuff is below ToO I can release very well my work, which is above, under a CC. EDIT2: the download page offers SVG of everything, so this was the source, what is your point? Shaddim (talk) 20:13, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
Discussion point showing consensus.
I've pointed you to a diff showing how to (not) use
{{cc-by-2.5}}
{{PD-ineligible}}
{{trademarked}}
to no avail, so

We can discuss further there. This discussion here is closed. Elvey (talk) 21:03, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
- What I see is that you the only one who pushes this extreme & needlessly literal interpretation (consensus is a stretch) which is clearly against the intent of Creative commons offering this license logos as elements. Also, it can be argued that the download page is indeed marked as CC-BY as it is not clearly marked that for the logos somethign else applies. Also is the their policy page ambigious and poorly worded...did someone got into contact with them? Shaddim (talk) 09:42, 10 May 2016 (UTC)
