Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

File:Arthur and Alexander (Suits).jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 14:03, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Khoren Gevor.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Khoren Gevor.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

Copyright violations
[edit]Published on some website ("public photo") has nothing to do with public domain. Public domain means free of copyrights. Free to reuse without asking and without paying for money making purposes. Thats not given for your uploads. Thats simply UNFREE files grabbed from some random websites and claimed public domain by you for no valid reason. Pay attention to copyrights. --Martin H. (talk) 16:43, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
- I looked at all the copyright templates and none of them seemed to match the photos I uploaded so I gave them the to simple to be copyrighted. What should I do to put my pictures up? Also is it possible I can see what I originally put in the summary box (Description, Date, Source, Author)? I just want to upload pictures of things I'm interested in. --TheShadowCrow (talk) 19:25, 25 December 2011 (UTC)
- You cant upload this photos. Its unfree files and this is a free content project. --Martin H. (talk) 19:45, 25 December 2011 (UTC)
Please tell me what I need to do in order to get permission to put these up. I'm new to uploading photos. And again, Also is it possible I can see what I originally put in the summary box (Description, Date, Source, Author)?--TheShadowCrow (talk) 23:37, 25 December 2011 (UTC)
- Please read Commons:Licensing. You have to request permission from the copyright holder. --Martin H. (talk) 00:09, 26 December 2011 (UTC)
What do I do if the copyright holder isn't named? Can I credit the website?--TheShadowCrow (talk) 19:20, 26 December 2011 (UTC)
- Crediting an image is only a part of the license problem - whoever is the author, the copyright holder must release the image with a Commons-compatible license (allowing image modification and commercial resuse). Suggestion: if you are unsure about copyright status of an image, then do not upload it on Commons, but ask someone. Cheers. Materialscientist (talk) 08:32, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

File:Narine Dovlatyan.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

Copyright violations
[edit]
Hello TheShadowCrow.
You have uploaded one or more files that are copyright violations. You have done so despite requests from editors not to do so, and despite their instructions. See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter useful. This is your last warning. The next time you upload a file that violates copyright, you will be blocked. Please leave me a message if you have further questions. |

Notification about possible deletion
[edit]Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.
If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Your userpage
[edit]I dont know what you plan with your userpage. But im concerned about the words "future pictures". Non of the photos linked on your userpage is a future upload, non of the photos linked on your page is suitable for Commons. All this files are unfree and not in scope of Commons. Just saying this in case you not know it. And before you spent time in something that has no future on Commons. See Commons:Project scope especially Commons:Project scope#Must be freely licensed or public domain for our project scope, see Commons:Licensing for more info on copyright requirements, and see Commons:Image casebook#Internet images. --Martin H. (talk) 04:19, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
- Royalty free is not free content. Royalty free means you pay once and you can use it for the purposes you payed for. Its an non-transferable license granted to you by the copyright holder. Free content means that anyone can use it anytime, anywhere for any purpose. --Martin H. (talk) 04:00, 28 March 2013 (UTC)

Collages in GIMP
[edit]Gimp takes very little time to learn. I will list the steps I did with File:Ipswich montage 2.jpg It may look long and complex but once you get used to the flow then it is easier.
- Download all the images to one working folder
- Open the top image first
- Expand the canvas to larger than the complete collage you intend to make
- Image menu --> canvas size
- Make it really tall and a little wider than a final size
- Drag the top image around in the canvas preview window if needed
- Open another image as a 'layer'
- File --> open as layer
- Adjust the new image layer
- Use the move tool from the toolbox to move it, gaps or overlap can be fixed when creating borders later but keep them tight
- Scale the layer to fit if needed, Layer menu on the top toolbar --> scale layer
- Use the rectangle select tool from the top left of the toolbox, select the crop area with mouse, then Layer menu --> crop to selection
- Anchor/merge layer, Layer menu --> anchor or merge
- Repeat until all images are in place without borders
- Create borders after all layers are anchored/merged
- Use the select tool to select thin rectangular borders to crop overlap and fill gaps
- Edit menu --> fill selection with BG or FG color. (Background/Foreground are white and black as default)
- Crop the final collage if some images stick out or have top/bottom/side gaps
- Notes
- Copy all of this thread to a .txt file or screen shot
- Export often as collage 1.0.png, collage 1.1.png, collage 1.3.png. File --> Export
- Edit menu --> undo is handy and has lots of backsteps
- Export often (repeated because it is handy for corrections/tweaks)
- Layers are tricky
- Practice with 2-3 layers or small images first if needed
- If they won't anchor/merge you may be on the wrong layer
- Layer menu --> stack, select top/bottom/previous/next, then anchor/merge, the bottom layer won't merge
- You don't need to anchor any layers until the final but it may be easiest when starting as it can be hard to keep track of which layer you are editing
- The top of the image window shows size and layer count
- X/Y link
- In the scale and canvas size windows there is a little chain icon of three links
- Close or break the links to lock changes to height/width (x/y)
- The toolbox has a measuring tool that is handy for scaling, measure the space you want the image to fit and then scale the layer to that pixel size
- Add more notes here

your assistance please...
[edit]Greetings!
I came here when I saw Commons:Deletion requests/File:Vaspurakan ARF Central Committee members.jpg
I thought E4024's choices included explaining their concern to you, rather than jumping immediately to nominating the image for deletion.
You scanned this image from somewhere... maybe a newspaper or a magazine article, maybe from a book or scholarly article. Maybe that article explicitly said the original source of the image was unknown... So, you should have listed the book or article where you found the image in the source field. If you can figure out where you found the image, could you please amend the image description? By checking that book or article we may be able to determine that the image is PD, simply due to its age.
I see quite a few articles you uploaded have been deleted. Some of them might have been preserved if your image descriptions were more complete.
Several dozen images you uploaded remain. If you did not record the book or article where you found them, but you can remember, or figure it out, could you go back and amend the source fields of those image descriptions? Geo Swan (talk) 23:39, 17 February 2019 (UTC)
