Shanghai University (SHU) is a municipal public university in Shanghai, China. It is owned by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government. The university is part of Project 211 and the Double First-Class Construction.

Shanghai University maintains three campuses: Jiading Campus, Yanchang Campus (in Jing'an), and Baoshan Campus.[2] The university has two undergraduate colleges and five broad academic divisions (Natural Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Engineering, Economics and Management, and Fine Arts), which contain 29 schools or departments.

In May 1994, the former Shanghai University of Technology, Shanghai University of Science and Technology, Shanghai University, and Shanghai Science and Technology Senior Vocational School merged to form the present-day Shanghai University.[3]

History

In 1983, the Shanghai Municipal People's Government established Shanghai University on the basis of the following six independent entities: the Independent Branch School Affiliated with Fudan University, the Independent Branch School Affiliated with Shanghai International Studies University, the Instrument and Electronics Independent Branch School Affiliated with East China Normal University, the Independent Branch School Affiliated with the Shanghai University of Science and Technology, the Light Industry Independent Branch School Affiliated with the Shanghai Institute of Mechanical Engineering, and the Shanghai Fine Arts School.[15]

In May 1994, the current Shanghai University was formed by the merger of the following four entities: the Shanghai University of Technology, the Shanghai University of Science and Technology, the former Shanghai University, and the Shanghai Science and Technology Senior Vocational School.[15]
