editI'm playing with AUPs at the moment. The one question which I can't answer is: how long (or short) should one be?
What a poor article about AUPs, or should we say "Acceptable Use Policy" documents. There is a very much wider range of issues about AUP documents: Who writes them? What are the range of topics contained in a AUP? How enforceable are AUP documents? Guidelines for businesses writing AUP documents. A range of AUP documents applying to general Internet users. and more . . . I will in the next few days attempt a rewrite of this document to make it into a much better and more representative of Wikipedia articles. The article also needs Wikification, and a much better list of categories. So expect more from me in the next few days. andyman 01:11, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
I have started researching this topic and possibly need to widen the topic to include documents that essentially do the same thing as AUP documents. Google asks all it Gmail customers to accept a "Terms of Use" which sets out "acceptable use policies" amongst a general description of their service. andyman 01:20, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
There are some aspects I still am working on -- I need to support some statements with a link. Am doing that work now. andyman 02:33, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
POV tag
editThis concerns POV tag cleanup. Whenever an POV tag is placed, it is necessary to also post a message in the discussion section stating clearly why it is thought the article does not comply with POV guidelines, and suggestions for how to improve it. This permits discussion and consensus among editors. This is a drive-by tag, which is discouraged in WP, and it shall be removed. Future tags should have discussion posted as to why the tag was placed, and how the topic might be improved. Better yet, edit the topic yourself with the improvements. This statement is not a judgement of content, it is only a cleanup of frivolously and/or arbitrarily placed tags. No discussion, no tag.Jjdon (talk) 21:17, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
- I just readded it without knowing at that time that it had been removed in the past. The article appears to single out specific companies and organizations too much; it appears to be pointing out what companies have strict AUPs and which ones have tolerant AUPs rather than explaining what an AUP is. I think the article needs to be rewritten to meet Wikipedia's standards, including our NPOV policy. GO-PCHS-NJROTC (Messages) 03:09, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
- I dispute the neutrality of the section on enforceability, as it seems more in the nature of an instruction on how a provider may make its terms of service enforceable, rather than a description of the treatment of this subject in scholarly sources. Bwrs (talk) 08:08, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

Delete or keep an index to this subject?
editThis week there's discussion about whether to delete or keep the Index of Articles Relating to Terms of Service and Privacy Policies, which I created in early August. That index helps readers find:
- this article
- articles on different aspects of terms of service
- articles which cover terms of service at specific companies
Wikipedians are welcome to improve the index, and/or discuss if it should be deleted or kept available. Numbersinstitute (talk) 16:40, 13 September 2017 (UTC)
