I wonder whether anyone has a better reference for this Alan Bates quote, one of the last he made of any note: "People think it's better my side of the street, but it isn't really." It is probably from a short piece he appeared in, in an ITV Evening News "soft news" piece a few months before he died. Date of Death
editThe official memorial website (http://www.alanbates.com/) shows his date of death as 27 December. I am going to change the article accordingly.--ukexpat (talk) 22:31, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
no mention of Oliver's Travels
editI noticed there is no mention of Bate's lead in Oliver's Travels which has a wiki article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver%27s_Travels I leave it to someone more familiar with the format of such articles to add it.

Wife's Cause of Death
editThis is listed as a "wasting disease", but her own Wikipedia article says she died from a heart attack. The source given only provides date of death, not cause. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.216.165.29 (talk) 15:00, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
- I noticed this straight away, but no one seems to have dealt with. Did she die from a heart attack or a wasting disease? What IS a "wasting disease" anyway?Barmispain (talk) 21:18, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
WikiProject LGBT studies
editWhy? He's not in any LGBT collections.. --24.20.129.18 (talk) 07:29, 17 February 2010 (UTC)
- There's nothing in the article to say he took it up the arse. Once again, the queers are using Queeripedia to publish lies. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.96.111.64 (talk) 21:44, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
- It's widely documented that he had a sexual relationship with Peter Wyngarde lasting 10 years, and with John Curry lasting 2 years until Curry's death from AIDS. See the refs in those articles. 217.155.20.163 (talk) 22:46, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
- If the above is correct and there is a verifiable source (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-455884/Alan-Batess-secret-gay-affair-ice-skater-John-Curry.html), Bates should be included in the appropriate category, as are all other gay actors.Barmispain (talk) 21:21, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
- Kerching! Another one taken for the queers! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 146.200.151.127 (talk) 10:44, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
- It is disputed whether Alan Bates and Peter Wyngarde were romantically involved because of claims made about the reliability of Donald Spoto's biography; the main source it appears for the assertion. I removed a direct mention from this article earlier today for this reason. Please keep a watch on the Wyngarde article to see if this issue is ever properly resolved. A single source cannot be used to decide a actors sexuality. The reference to Alan Bates sexuality is therefore untrustworthy. Andrew Dock 65 (talk) 23:37, 7 February 2023 (UTC)
short story
editAlan Bates won a ten-guinea prize for his short story 'No man's Land' published in Kolokon, Volume 1 No 3. Winter 1966. (At the time, Kolokon received financial assitance from the North Eastern Association for the Art). I can't give any citations for this - but I do possess a copy of the magazine! I don't know whether this is relevant to the article or not - that's why I have mentioned it here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gramorak (talk • contribs) 18:03, 27 September 2011 (UTC) sorry, forgot to sign Gramorak (talk 20:29, 27 September 2011 (UTC)

The Running Man
editAs I recall, this is a decent movie in which Bates is good, but is the amount of space currently given to it disproportionate? It's not one of his more famous roles. Per$1$tenceofv1$1on (talk) 01:55, 5 March 2023 (UTC)Per$1$tenceofv1$1on
Alan Bates Knighthood in 2003 — Honorific prefix "Sir" belongs above name in infobox.
editUser Nford24 has reverted 2 edits thus far, based on the belief that the "Sir" belongs in front of the name rather than above. MOS:SIR states nothing against the prefix specifically, and there is not a clear statement regarding prefix usage on the infobox.
Per Atchom's talk page, as that user also removed it, I learned about an archived discussion. It was massive, but the conclusion yielded this applicable statement which actually SUPPORTS maintaining "Sir" or "Dame" above honorary damehoods/knighthoods for actors, singers, and other entertainment/arts types:
Editors should also take care not to impose an honorific title prefix inline on subjects who have received a title but which is not significantly referred to in general media when discussing that particular subject.
Alan Bates is someone who, in the last year of his life after being knighted, and in all subsequent years since his death, has always been referred to as Sir Alan Bates in articles and other forms of print, from film historians, journalists, and such. Such references on his article page can attest to that, but more can be exhumed if necessary.
Also, if consensus is needed to support this perspective, that is fine. I have reverted it back for now, as that's how it was for a lengthy period of time before any discussion took place on the talk page. This rule and issue was completely unbeknownst to me and several other editors. --Cinemaniac86TalkStalk 08:06, 7 June 2024 (UTC)
- Staring two seperate talkpage conversations on the same subject isn’t really advisable. Nford24 (PE121 Personnel Request Form) 10:13, 7 June 2024 (UTC)
- They aren't about the same things. Your talk page regards our reverts.
- This talk page is an open forum discussion for anyone and everyone, to support or refute maintaining the prefix above his name. Just mentioning the usernames because it's integral to the tale, and what I gleaned from the archive. --Cinemaniac86TalkStalk 00:21, 8 June 2024 (UTC)
- So, in any event, interested to hear if people are opposed or for the prefix above the name.
- And about that Wikipedia guideline I quoted, particularly the part in bold. Does anyone else agree (or disagree) that it applies to Alan Bates? And for that matter, do you find that applicable to others such as Ian McKellen, Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, and so forth. --Cinemaniac86TalkStalk 00:23, 8 June 2024 (UTC)
