Indictment

edit

It would be better, in connection with Stein's arrest and the Kenneth I. Starr matter, to link to a primary source rather than press accounts. The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York has put out a statement. http://www.justice.gov/usao/nys/pressreleases/May10/starrkennethetalarrestpr.pdf

I've added this to the article. In the future, please feel free to add stuff like this yourself. Also, when you add a comment to a talk page, please use four tildes (~~~~) at the end of the comment to "sign" it with your name or IP number and a date/timestamp. Board of Estimate

edit

The article says "...the Board of Estimate, which was made up of the Mayor, the City Comptroller and the City Council President, each of whom had two votes, and the five Borough presidents, each with one vote." The proportions are the same, but actually the three city-wide officials had four votes each and the Borough Presidents each had two, for a total of 22 votes. Just in case somebody wants to defend the current wording, I'll wait to make the change. If I don't think to come back this way again, I hope somebody makes the change after an appropriate interval. I made the change, but reverted myself, since this US Supreme Court case supports the figures currently in the article. I'm adding that ref to the article, and you'll need a citation to support your contention before it can be added to the article. Beyond My Ken (talk) 04:47, 29 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Ethnicity

edit

Mr Stein is of Jewish ethnicity and ethnicity has always been and is relevant in NY politics. I don't know what his religion is (being Jewish American does not mean you are a practioner of Judaism). This is much more relevant than the fact that he dated Ann Coulter. The source also indicates that he wanted to be the first Jewish president Patapsco913 (talk) 05:17, 13 May 2012 (UTC) Here is an article referring to Mr Stein's support amongst Jewish voters and clearly indicating the role ethnicity plays in politics [1]Reply

""Nonetheless, some political analysts contend that some voters who may have voted for Mr. Stein -- women and Jewish voters in particular -- might now be inclined to support Ms. Alter. "She might well pick up some of Stein's support, particularly in some of the Jewish sections of Brooklyn," said John H. Mollenkopf..."" I am not sure why ethnicity is not relevant to the biography of a person, especially politicians 05:54, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

What is required to have an identification of Stein's ethicity or religion in the article is a citation from a reliable source in which Stein himself makes a statement as to his self-identification. Absent that, adding his ethinicity or religion is a violation of the BLP rules. Beyond My Ken (talk) 06:23, 13 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the response. As far as I can see, BLP rules only refer to religion and sexual orientation as requiring self-identification and not ethnicity (if it says otherwise please show me where). If a reliable source provides the ethnicity of a person it is usable. Besides that, the NYT article also states that he wanted to become the first "Jewish" president. Being Jewish can be either an ethnicity or a religion: being Jewish American does not require that they be a practioner of Judaism (see Who is a Jew?) "Categories regarding religious beliefs or sexual orientation should not be used unless the subject has publicly self-identified with the belief or orientation in question, and the subject's beliefs or sexual orientation are relevant to their public life or notability, according to reliable published sources." Patapsco913 (talk) 06:40, 13 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Since "Jewish" can be an ethicity or a religion, the more restrictive BLP rules concerning religion must apply. Nonetheless, the Times article about his aspiration should be sufficient to include his Jewishness in the article. However, there's also the matter of WP:WEIGHT. To have "Jewish-American" in the lede sentence puts a lot of weight on that identification. Many times this is rectified by putting the identifier elsewhere, as in the meat of the biographical section. Often something like "born into a Jewish-American family..." or words to that effect are used. Can you find somewhere else in the article to add the identifer to "take the curse off it", as we say in the theatre. Beyond My Ken (talk) 21:20, 13 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
