185 MPH Capri

edit

In the late 80's or early 90's one of the big name car magazines took a Capri with the 255 V8, installed the tallest ratio gears they could get in the rear axle and with some other tweaks were able to run it up to 185 MPH. I just can't remember which magazine it was, saw scans of the pages on the web. Bizzybody (talk) 03:59, 19 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

"some other tweaks" including a rather large rocket a la mythbusters, or maybe they just drove it off the back of cargo plane at 30000 ft? I think you have had your leg pulled. Greglocock (talk) 23:15, 23 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Bubble hatch

edit

Compare a side view of a bubble hatch Capri with a Porsche 924. It's very obvious that Mercury was attempting to duplicate the rear profile of the Porsche. The line from the top, over the hatch and down to the bumper is nearly identical. That's why the bumper has those large lumps either side of the license plate, just for the profile line in side view. The Ford Capri was relesed in 1970, AFAIK the Porsche 924 was 1976. Design work on the Capri would have been welll before 1970 - in those days most design was still paper based and the lead time to develop a model was much longer than today, so the Capri predates the Porsche 924 by quite a bit. It is an interesting comparisome that you've made - I guess it probably comes down to the constraints of tech, materials, costs and most importantly fashions affecting a design quite ot]ften throw up similar solutions. Styling differences

edit

The plastic fake louvers behind the quarter windows differed from the Mustang's vertical ribbed theme. The Capri's had a horizontal theme, designed to look like three rear facing vents. (Most likely caused less turbulence and drag on the Capri.) That, along with the bulged fenders sharp top lines and the visually shorter grille height give the impression the Capri is lower, longer and less boxy than the Mustang though they have the same dimensions. Yes, I think Ford screwed up big time. The Capri design should've been used for the Mustang, and should've been made as a coupe too.Bizzybody (talk) 04:12, 19 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Manufacture

edit

The "Capri" manufactured in Australia from 1991 - 1994 was an entirerly different vehicle based on the same platform as the Mazda 323 / Ford Laser's of that era. Ford Australia possibly assembled CKD Capri's or imported them in the 1970's. Andrew Robbins (talk) 06:30, 10 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
