What makes an alumni notable?
editShould notable alumni only be added that currently have a wikipedia page? Is that a rule or suggestion from wikipedia, or imposed from the opinion of others? 76.105.160.75 (talk) 06:45, 1 December 2010 (UTC)
- It is the common practice for notable alumni, residents, etc. where an article lists out notable people who have been associated with a school or city that the person have an article on Wikipedia already. This helps to demonstrate that the person is indeed notable, as presumably for there to be an article on the person in Wikipedia they pass the notability guidelines. Without this small check, the lists on schools and towns would become unwieldy as every Tom, Dick, and Harry would add their name to the list (happens quite often on high school articles). How would the reader be able to know who actually is notable otherwise? Aboutmovies (talk) 07:02, 1 December 2010 (UTC)
- Also, as it appears you removed the references tag, I added a little bit different one, which may help you better understand the problem with the sourcing. First, all but one is from the school, which creates problems with covering the topic from a neutral point of view. Secondly, most are simply bare references that need more to be useful, especially since most URLs eventually become dead links. Lastly, an article this size should have roughly twice as many references to get it up to being a quality article. Aboutmovies (talk) 07:12, 1 December 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for the info, I have added a couple references and will work on citing them correctly. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.105.160.75 (talk) 07:27, 1 December 2010 (UTC)
- It is looking better, but note that some primary sources are OK, we just don't want 6 of 7 being from the school, which is what it was. I removed the tag from George Fox, as though not ideal to use that many from the school, there are a fair amount of third party sources. There are 34 sources, and 41 cites: with that 18 of 41 cites are independent, or close to half. Again, not ideal, but not 6 of 7. Think of it this way: cops rarely will ticket you for doing 65 in a 55, but usually will if you are doing 100 in a 55. Similarly, we try not to tag the not ideal, but sort of acceptable ones like George Fox, but will tag the articles that have serious problems. Or, if it is an issue of needing additional citations, we use the smaller and more subtle[citation needed] tag on the individual area needing a citation, versus the large and prominent one at the top of the article.
