This page has been moved twice (and back again) from "Richard Armstrong (Hawaii)", by good faith editors who try to fit Armstrong into a nice, neat little slot. Stop it, please. There is more than one Richard Armstrong on Wikipedia, so there has to be something after his name. Armstrong was most known for his accomplishments in Hawaii. He was a missionary, but he was also Minister of Public Instruction, President of the Board of Education and spent the last 14 years of his life overhauling the structure of the education system of the Kingdom of Hawaii. - BD2412 I don't know why you did this, but you should have read this talk page first. Being a missionary is almost the least of this man's professions. You seriously erred on this move, and I am surprised you did not try to even discuss it here first. What prompted you to do this? Please explain your actions. - The fact that User:Editorofthewiki and User:Schierbecker have each independently moved this page before I got here should strongly signal that the present disambiguator is insufficient. To be clear, we do not disambiguate human subjects with a state name alone. "Richard Armstrong" is not an example of "a Hawaii"; the word "Hawaii" used in this context is an adjective. He must be a "Hawaii something". It seems to have been apparent to multiple editors that the most relevant something is "missionary". - BD2412 Let me just give you some advice here. The "fact" that two other editors independently happened to do the same thing, should not be used as a reason to move anything on Wikipedia. I've been through too many messy clean-ups, because of "anybody can edit", and be followed eventually by, " ... hey, what that guy did looks like a good idea ... I'll do it also." Admins are necessary because editors have the freedom to do what they want on Wikipedia, and we come along with the mop and bucket. I see you are using AWB to carry out this project of yours on moving pages on Wikipedia. I personally think using AWB to carry out a series of moves is not always a good idea. You do this as an admin, but a lot of editors have gotten blocked for moving pages without prior discussion on a talk page. — Maile (talk) 03:45, 23 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
- Just to be clear: 1) I am not using AWB to move these pages. I am moving them manually. I am only using AWB to update the links to correspond to the moves. 2) The issue with state-only disambiguators has been under discussion in several forums for some time, (most recently before this effort, I raised it here) without objection to the proposition that this constitutes a general sitewide improvement. 3) I have moved over 600 titles and updated over 9,000 links over the past two months, and this is literally the first time any editor has raised any objection to this.
