Station began in 1978??
editAcoriding to this sky one article the orignal station sky one grew out of started in the early 80s, but this table on wikipedia suggests it was actually 1978 [[1]]
- The BBC's very handy programme catalogue shows that 'Newsnight' covered the launch of Sky Channel on the 16th January 1984, saying that it launched 'tonight' [2]. It also states that it's Britain's first ever satellite channel. BillyH 01:04, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
Intresting, but how can this be the UK's first ever, seeing as even this article admits that Murdoc bought an exsiting network that was aired in the UK? confusing! Also, I found great interest that only "10,000" people could get Satelitte TV when it first aired in the UK, not that i am disputing that figure, just saying it's intresting. That probably would have seemed like a lot back then, just like 1 million having mobile phones in the 1980s seemed a lot. 74.65.39.59 12:34, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
Sky One did begin in 1982, back then as Sky Channel, if you look at the website http://www.tv-ark.org.uk/[3] and click in the Sky history, Sky Channel began in 1982, not 1984. The service that came before began in 1978, so the current text in the article that dates these events as 1978 and 1982 is correct. 74.65.39.59 12:50, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
- The 1984 date is when it was legally available in the UK, before that it was broadcast from outsite the UK, was unlicenced by the IBC. IIRC the Cable Authority was pretty much set up to grant a license to Sky. Prior to this it was a pirate television channel and thus could not actively market in the UK. Timeline is this:
- 1978 Launch as SATV
- 1982 Bought by Murdoch, rebranded to Sky Television
- 1984 Granted UK Licence by CA
- MrWeeble Talk Brit tv 13:13, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

Makes no difference, we're still talking about when the channel LAUNCHED and was FOUNDED, not when it was "legally avalible", so even if it was broadcasting from 1978 to 1989 just for one person that is still the launch date, also it was possible to buy equipment on import from overseas (if you had the cash) and view the channel in the UK. 74.65.39.59 14:03, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
- MrWeeble is wrong anyway; it wasn't a "pirate" channel as it couldn't be received in the UK until 1984 (after getting the CA licence). And DTH satellite didn't exist before this time, except a tiny handful of very rich hobbyists. 109.176.254.181 (talk) 20:13, 4 February 2013 (UTC)
- The company Satellite Television launched in 1978, but its TV station of the same name launched in 1982. Similar to how British Satellite Broadcasting (BSB) started in 1988 but didn't launch its channels until 1990. Also MrWeeble is incorrect, Satellite Television was sold in 1984, not 1982. 78.18.246.214 (talk) 11:17, 1 September 2021 (UTC)

editWhy does the logo keep changing pointlessly for a lower-quality version? --Antz 22:54, 23 October 2005 (UTC)
- Because someone in Sky doesn't want us to notice it says "Sky Onc". Just like "Sky Tuo" and "Sky Thrcc":p --Kiand 22:56, 23 October 2005 (UTC)

Claire Sturgess
editThis may be my faulty memory, but I'm unaware of anyone other than Claire Sturgess doing the continuity since we got the channel in 1998. If you look at the Sky One page on TV Ark [4], Claire's the voice for all idents from the 'yellow lozenge' ones onward (which are billed as 1997, but looking at vintage schedules the Simpsons one is from the 3rd May 1998). I also have an entire night's programming on tape from April 2000, and Claire is the voice of all the links. BillyH 11:04, 11 February 2006 (UTC)
History Messed up
editThe history of Sky One has got messed up. I was in the middle of reverting vandalism by Paulakin when they moved the page from under me. I don't know the best way to fix this, I reckon delete this page, and move back (again) Blind Date on TV and revert the edits. -- Jbattersby 09:40, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

Virgin Media Comments
editWhy does someone keep putting 'until summer 2007' next to Virgin Media, the link they keep using says 'Sky warns cable viewers they may lose its channels' and does not say that the channels are going i don't see how the two comments connect. --AJFurnell 19:28, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
WP:NOT
editWith reference to WP:NOT, I'm minded to say a list of current and former shows isn't encyclopedic? The precedent is that all channels list every programme they have ever shown, for the likes of ITV and BBC1 this list would go on for several pages. Pit-yacker 19:02, 2 March 2007 (UTC)
Virgin Media dispute
edit"(not former Telewest areas)" reads like the channel is still available in Telewest areas, not that it was never available in the first place. - Lee Stanley 23:23, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

Some death-preventing US precognition show....
editThere was some series made from the US that a woman being able to predict people's death and the whole plot of the series was to prevent people's death as much to her abilities.
When she touches a corpse, a corpse says "Help me" and she returns back in time when the person was alive; that was in Sky One trailers to jog you people's memories.
WHAT WAS the name of that show?!

Will Showcase be a rebrand of One or will it be an entirely new entity? Details of that seem hazy. --Jf81 (talk) 13:54, 2 August 2021 (UTC)
- Sky Showcase will be a brand new channel which will showcase programmes from across the full network of Sky channels, apart from Sky News and Sky Sports News. Rillington (talk) 13:57, 2 August 2021 (UTC)
- Keep in mind that Sky Living (and formerly LIVING etc) became Sky Witness and that article simply got moved over to Sky Witness. --Jf81 (talk) 13:59, 2 August 2021 (UTC)
- I'm starting to feel a move to Showcase would be better. Hence I put up a notice so the community can have discussions regarding this. --Jf81 (talk) 14:01, 2 August 2021 (UTC)
- I disagree. Sky Showcase is a brand new channel and is not the replacement channel for Sky One as it will show programming from all of Sky's channels. Sky One's programming is moving to the other new channel Draft:Sky Max and to Sky Comedy. My view is that there should be separate articles for all three channels. Rillington (talk) 14:06, 2 August 2021 (UTC)
- Sky Showcase is a rebrand of Sky One, let's not get caught up in marketing puff. When it launches, this article should be moved over to Sky Showcase. Stifle (talk) 14:43, 2 August 2021 (UTC)
- Sky Showcase is a different channel which will be showing different programming. If anything, 'Sky Max' could be seen as more of a rebrand of Sky One, as the general entertainment programming which Sky One is known for will be continuing on that channel -- but even this is a conclusion which we, as Wikipedia editors, should not be drawing for ourselves in the absence of official statements or evidence saying so. (So to that degree I concur with Rillington that there should be separate articles for all three.) Regardless, Showcase is clearly and obviously different, and we need to avoid the kind of silliness that JF81 correctly mentions above, where people have this strange tendency to want to lump together obviously different channels as if they were the same one because historically they've happened to have the same channel number. (Sky Living was female-focused and showed an entirely different mix of programmes to Sky Witness, a crime drama-focused channel which bears no similarity to Living beyond the channel number.) Bonusballs (talk) 15:12, 2 August 2021 (UTC)
- There is a strong argument for Sky Living having its own article given that it is a different channel when compared to what Sky Living was. Rillington (talk) 13:30, 3 August 2021 (UTC)
- Have to agree, at the very least on both Sky Showcase and Sky Max wiki entries it should be pointed out that this was part of a re-marketing of Sky TV channels rather than new channels, the content of channels change all the time, Sky Witness (formerly Sky Living) is a good example, it is pure "marketing puff". oppose move: Sky One is effectively splitting into Sky Showcase and Sky Max (and to a degree, into the already established Sky Comedy. I think separate articles is the way to go here. c87d98b10 00:50, 17 August 2021 (UTC)
- Sky Max will effectively replace Sky Replay, moving programming around a set of channels does not equate to launch new channels. Sky ONE = Sky Showcase, Sky Replay = Sky Max and Sky Comedy remains as Sky Comedy IrishTV (talk) 22:11, 22 August 2021 (UTC)
- Sorry, but that's not my take on it at all. So going to have to agree to disagree on that. c87d98b10 08:55, 23 August 2021 (UTC)
- Indeed, Sky Max is clearly the most direct relation/replacement for Sky One as almost all of the shows from Sky One are moving to that channel. Saying that "Sky ONE = Sky Showcase" just because these two different channels will have used the same channel number is a little like saying that "FOX = Sky Nature". It's obviously not correct. - Keep as separate articles - Sky Max is a new channel. Sky Max launched today (1 September 2021), Sky One HD/SD/+1 are still available on satellite but it is showing Sky Showcase HD/SD/+1 but with Sky Max HD/SD/+1 EPG data/listings. - Oppose - keep articles separate: Sky One isn't being rebranded as Max/Showcase, it is being shut down and replaced. As such, the articles shouldn't be merged. XxLuckyCxX (talk) 17:42, 1 September 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose and keep the articles separate. Both Sky Showcase and Sky Max are distinct channels and neither could be considered a direct replacement of Sky One. They should all be considered separate channels. Kuchi Kopi (talk) 10:13, 3 September 2021 (UTC)
- agree and keep it to one article Sorry, I thought Sky Replay was being dropped based on the Sky press release, which didn't list Sky Replay as part of their channel line up. Anyway I still believe having viewed Sky Showcase that this article should just be renamed, the reason, the channel is nothing more than a simulcast of the other Sky channels, with little difference to Sky ONE that I can see. It seems to be a very messy marketing piece of work. IrishTV (talk) 11:04, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose - maintain separate articles. Sky Showcase airs programmes from multiple Sky channels (not always simulcast) so even in that respect alone, it is clearly not the same channel at all. We really must get over this idea that having used the same channel number at different times in their history makes unrelated channels somehow 'the same channel'. Bonusballs (talk) 12:29, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
- I know I am on the losing team but... "having used the same channel number at different times in their history makes unrelated channels somehow 'the same channel'" .... not sure this rings through here after all "both" channels are related by ownership (new and old) and both channels used the same set of programming, it would be different if Sky ONE had closed shop and Sky had handed the channel slot to BBC Three! It is purely sky marketing, much like Sky Living etc. IrishTV (talk) 22:49, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
- I'm afraid I disagree, it's not "purely sky marketing", it's a clear and obvious difference. Sky Living is an excellent example - Sky Living was, and always had been, a female-focused channel. Starting as 'UK Living', then becoming just 'Living', then becoming 'Sky Living' when purchased by Sky. If Wikipedia is to be believed, the change of this female-focused channel into one showing non-stop crime drama, called Sky Witness, is "just sky marketing" and that it's really the same channel. But it clearly is not. Different programmes, different audience, different name. It could not be more obviously different. But because they were both on channel 108, people go "same channel!" as if it were a continuous lineage, rather than considering the more rational and obvious conclusion that the owner of the old channel closed it down, and replaced it with something new and different. Same applies here. The majority of Sky One's programming is moving to SKY MAX, not Sky Showcase. Sky Showcase is promoted and advertised as showcasing the content of EIGHT different Sky channels (Sky Max being ONLY one of them), so to say that Showcase is "the same set of programming" as Sky One and therefore the same channel under a different name is clearly and obviously wrong. Some programmes are the same, but most aren't. Clearly different, not "just marketing." Bonusballs (talk) 14:01, 5 September 2021 (UTC)
- Can't quantify this but in reality the types of "crime dramas" that air on witness do extremely well in the female demographic, from what I have heard. Also I would have to look at the last Living schedule v the current Witness schedule. though you could argue that moving your demographic is simply marketing, rather than a closure of a channel. IrishTV (talk) 12:37, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

- Comment: I know the websites like tvliveforum.com cannot be regarded as a reliable source, but the "Sky Portfolio Changes" thread (especially the posts dated between 1 and 2 September 2021) suggests that Sky One was actually relaunched as Sky Max and got a new channel number, and the newly launched Sky Showcase took Sky One's place. Perhaps, we can wait until Ofcom updates September 2021 licence changes to see what actually happened to the Sky One's licence. Watch that space. JSH-alive/talk/cont/mail 13:26, 10 September 2021 (UTC)
- I forgot to mention that Sky One +1 became Sky Showcase +1 (unlike the main Sky One channel). Meanwhile, the September 2021 edition of Ofcom's "TV broadcast licensing monthly updates" is yet to show us what actually happened to the series of Sky One broadcast licenses. Where should I go to prove "Sky One became blah blah blah..." etc.? JSH-alive/talk/cont/mail 14:26, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
- Support Now that the smoke has cleared...it's clear that Showcase is just Sky One with the last part of the name painted over with "Showcase". If it would have been discontinued entirely I could see keeping them separate, but to the layman who doesn't care about YouTube channels about network mergers and closing, they just got a different name and maintain the continuity of the 1982 network. Also at this point the Showcase article is a zero-sourced programme list article on par with a fanboy-written article for some ignored Filipino soap repeat network, and does not have the read feel of one of Europe's most watched networks like Sky One does. Nate • (chatter) 01:31, 2 November 2021 (UTC)
- Comment: I don't see how you can surmise that "it's clear" that Showcase is "just Sky One" considering that Showcase broadcasts material from eight different Sky channels, and Sky One never did anything like that. You could possibly draw the conclusion that 'Sky Max is just Sky One' - if you really really wanted to join the dots and make your own links like that - but drawing the same conclusion of Showcase, an entirely different channel, seems very hard to understand. Bonusballs (talk) 10:44, 2 November 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose and keep them separate: After looking into the pages and given that they will grow overtime, they new channels. Not to mention, much of the content has already moved to different channels. Sky Showcase and Sky Max are distinct and in such manner, have different content, with Sky Showcase even simulcasting with the other Sky channels. Sure, the channel as a whole may have kinda semi-split into two, but its not fully a direct replacement. Proving that Sky One is Sky Showcase and Sky One is Sky Max is obviously nonsensical. It's best that you keep it separate while you continue add new things that comes into the articles of these new channels whenever new changes come along. 20chances (talk) 05:36, 14 January 2022 (UTC)
