Hurricane Katrina and Repent America

I have reverted this sentence because I believe Repent America's comments are germane to the article, especially the section on Hurricane Katrina. It is a fact that this organization put out a press release and I see no POV in the way it is presented. --Ektar 21:30, 3 September 2005 (UTC)

• While it is a fact that they issued a press release, I question whether they are notable enough to be included in this article. If I issued a press release about McDonald's saying that Chicken McNuggets were made of people, would that be worthy of inclusion in the McDonald's article? tregoweth 21:35, September 3, 2005 (UTC)
  • That argument is some what of a straw man. The RA press release has gotten a good amount of press coverage. It is certainly notable. I doubt you would get much attention from anyone if you were to put out a press release about McDonald's Chicken McNuggets. But if by some chance your hypothetical press release were to make headlines, I believe a single sentence in the Chicken McNuggets article wouldn't exactly be extraneous. --Ektar 03:48, 4 September 2005 (UTC)

• The problem is that their press release has been misquoted. They never say that they believe Huricane Katrina was sent because of Southern Decadence. The most relevant quote in their press release is ' "Although the loss of lives is deeply saddening, this act of God destroyed a wicked city," stated Repent America director Michael Marcavage. "From 'Girls Gone Wild' to 'Southern Decadence,' New Orleans was a city that had its doors wide open to the public celebration of sin. From the devastation may a city full of righteousness emerge," he continued." ' They never say the Hurricane was a result of Southern Decadence or even a result of 'wickedness' in general. They only say that they believe it offers an opportunity for 'righteousness' to emerge. Johntex 19:40, 6 September 2005 (UTC)
  • The press release was never quoted. If anything it was misconstrued, which I would agree is wrong. But ignoring the implication is, to put it nicely, obtuse. The first 4 paragraphs of the press release deal with Southern Decandence. The Press release is called "HURRICANE KATRINA DESTROYS NEW ORLEANS DAYS BEFORE "SOUTHERN DECADENCE"." There is no doubt that the implication is that Southern Decandence (and New Orlean's acceptance of it) is the main cause of Katrina. I think the only change that really needs to be made from the original is to say: "...their belief the looming Southern Decadence festival was one of the reasons New Orleans was devastated by Hurricane Katrina, the hurricane being an act of God." But even that makes it seem like Southern Decadence was one of a list of things given as a reason for the wrath of god.

• Isn't it time this "Repent America" section be merged into a generic "criticism" section. RA was just one group of several that exploited the situation. We have over 2 years perspective to see RA's rant blown out of proportion to the article's scope. Any consensus on merging this?

Note about History section

I moved most of the history of Decadence to Talk:Southern Decadence/History as it was clearly a copyvio from Southern Decadence's history page on their website. There was no indication that we had permission to reproduce it. I'm going to try to rewrite it to remove the copyvio, but any other editor who wants to give it a crack is welcome to.

Dykeadence

There are no sources listed for Dykeadence. It also fails to explain how it serves so-called people of color. I would have to challenge how a lesbian event can serve gay Black men.
