The following may be useful in The Staunton-Morphy controversy, Howard Staunton, Paul morphy and elsewhere:

  • PAUL MORPHY: A MEMOIR by Johann Löwenthal, from Morphy's Games of Chess, London, 1860*
    • Concludes "Upon this there ensued a controversy into which we do not intend to enter."
  • Chess Disputes by Jeremy P. Spinrad:
    • Staunton & Löwenthal not friends.
    • Many disputes involve Staunton.
  • Attacks on Howard Staunton by Edward Winter
  • MORPHY, Paul (1837—1884) from The Encyclopaedia Of Chess by Anne Sunnucks (1970)
    • " He also defeated the other leading players of London and Paris, except for Staunton, who, out of practice and past his best, declined a match. Morphy attached some importance to a public declaration that it was through no fault of his own that a match had not come about ..." - and that's all she wrote.
  • Psychoanalytic Observations on Chess and Chess Masters (section on Paul Morphy) from Fine's 1956 article "Psychoanalytic Observations on Chess and Chess Masters," in the professional journal Psychoanalysis which, in turn, was later published in booklet form in 1967 under the title, The Psychology of the Chess Player; with discussion between Fine and Ernest Jones. Only if we need Freudian analysis!
  • Louis Paulsen - Paul Morphy --- New York Times - August 20, 1891, the NY Time's obit of Paulsen, quoting P on Morphy and Steintiz.
  • Paul Morphy, by Michael Kenny, SJ, in Twice Remembered (Moments in the History of Spring Hill College) edited by Charles J Boyle:
    • War was the subject of M's graduating thesis, and he defined very narrowly the condition sunder which war was justifiable. In his opinion the Confederacy's secession did not meet these conditions.
    • "Whether in play or life Morphy was severely logical, perhaps to a fault."
  • Results of 1857 New York tournament
  • von der Lasa on Staunton - copy of von der Lasa's obit of S (written in Copenhagen, Nov. 23rd, 1874), in City of London Chess Magazine Vol. II, pp.12-13, January 1875.
  • The Late Howard Staunton by William Norwood Potter - obit of S in City of London Chess Magazine, August 1874
  • The Staunton Challenge
    • text of S's reply
    • "All this while, Morphy was trying to procure permission for his family to travel to Europe for the purpose of playing Staunton in London and attending the tournament in Birmingham. On June 22 Morphy would be of legal age and his family was concerned that such a trip would interfere with the establishment of his professional career. Ernest Morphy and Judge Meek helped convince the rest of his family to allow Paul's trip to Europe and at last they relented."

    • Engraving of M.
    • Blindold display in B'ham 27 Aug 1858, with games, and commentary complimentary to M., e.g "In these games Mr. Morphy overlooks nothing ... as if everything had been foreseen and provided for."
    • Reports Lyttleton as saying on evening of 27 Aug that he hoped M would conquer all except one, Staunton, whomm L. hoped would win.
  • Match between Messrs. Morphy and Lowenthal — game 11] ILN 18 Sept 1858 p. 272
  • 4036. Excuses for losing from pages 191-200 of Chess Life-Pictures by G.A. MacDonnell (London, 1883)
  • Staunton's letter to the Illustrated London News, November 15, 1858
  • (most likely) from Howard Staunton's chess column in the Illustrated London News, April 3, 1858 - (?) fullt text, looks more ambiguous than excerpts given by Murray.
  • Documents Pertaining to Paul Morphy - catalogue of Staunton-morphy sources.

Further sources needed

edit

In such a controversial issue the first thing is to establish who did / said what, when and where. Where conversations, letters and publications are concerned, full and attributed extracts are needed. So any help that anyone can provide will be extremely valuable.

Points on which further information with WP:RS would be particularly valuable:

  • Date on which the original challenge was sent from the USA and arrived in England.
  • Full text of the original challenge.
  • Text of Staunton's offer to pay Morphy by telegraph, with date. etc.
  • Text of Illustrated London News′ article "Arrival of Mr. Morphy" on 26 June 1858.
  • Full text of Walker's article in Bell's Life in London on Sunday 22 August.
  • Conversation(s) between Staunton & Murphy in Birmingham, Aug 1858.
  • Date and full text of Morphy's letter to Fiske re funds and of Maurian's reply to Fiske.
  • A better source for Morphy's open letter of 6 Oct, as the NY Times’ server is rather erratic.
  • Full text of Lyttleton's comments, with date.
  • Any other quotes from the slanging match, including after the cancellation.

Please expand the lead section

edit

I think the lead section needs a couple more sentences to give an overview of the controversy, so that it can stand on its own. Bubba73 (talk), 01:19, 23 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I was planning on doing that when the content's nearly finished. -- Philcha (talk) 12:13, 23 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

redundant

edit

Some of the Aftermath section is a duplicate of the background on Morphy. Bubba73 (talk), 15:04, 15 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

proposal about alekhine-capablanca rematch controversy

edit

There is a widely debated topic on chess history, it is not clear whether it is based on facts or rumours/speculations. the topic is: "Alekhine-Capablanca world championship rematch." Some believe Alekhine avoided Capablanca and some believe contrary, ALekhine gave him a chance but Capa did not use it. can wikipedia enlighten all of us on this matter? p.s: I am not good at wikipedia, I cant add references and e.t.c. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sir artur (talkcontribs) 15:00, 4 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
