Untitled
editTito Puente never performed salsa until later on in his life, in league with other contemporary musical greats of that genre. Salsa was actually developing parallel to Puente's latin jazz movement and thus he cannot be credited with inventing it; actually no one can, as it developed gradually from Afro-Cuban son, charanga, and the like.
- I am changing the first paragraph to reflect his contribution in the Afro-Cuban genre of Mambo, which is what made him famous. Tito Puente was NOT a salsa musician and in fact disliked the term "salsa," which refers to a different genre than what Puente played. The following is incorrect: "often credited as the first pure "salsa" performer." I am changing the text to correct it. --Tuttobene 23:52, 22 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- A citation for this claim would be helpful.
After many years of musical genius, Tito Puente was awarded with his own hollywood star.
- bah! A Star on the Walk of Fame is no great honor. Friggin' Ryan Seacrest has one.
Family
editIs Audrey his daughter or granddaughter? It says granddaughter here, but daughter over on Audrey Puente. 213.52.212.129 14:52, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
- Daughter. Confirmed from obit in NY Times DutchTreat (talk) 14:03, 19 September 2009 (UTC)
This is disgracefully short
editTheres hardly even a mention of any of his recordings...
- I agree. I'm going to make it my mission to improve this article over the coming months. — Ke6jjj 01:23, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
- : I'm not the one to do it, but surely someone needs to put in a mention of Oye Como Va. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.238.237.96 (talk) 15:20, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
His Puerto Rican Heritage
editTito Puente's Biography on "Tito Puente - King of Latin Music" by Jim Payne and Tito Puente, describes his Puerto Rican origin. I changed the sentence containing "of Cuban origin" and "(he was so successful playing popular Afro-Cuban rhythms that many people mistakenly identify him as Puerto Rican)" to "...mistakenly identify him as Cuban" since the earlier didn't even make sense.
Senior and Junior
editPlease note that the person described in this article, the one who died in the year 2000, is Tito Puente Senior. His son, who carries on the family tradition by performing a lot of the music formerly done by his father, is Tito Puente Junior. Both are notable, although Senior is/was more notable than Junior. Junior does not yet have a Wikipedia article of his own. 70.176.239.47 06:59, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
Simply rubbish, not enough information —Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.58.74.72 (talk) 23:59, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
- I came here looking for Jr. but it is only talking about senior. I went to see Jr. in concert so is most certainly not dead since 2000. He will be in my hometown this weekend. https://www.wenatcheeworld.com/go/tito-puente-jr-brings-upbeat-latin-jazz-to-numerica-pac/article_a4ee0a24-a80b-11ed-a1ea-6b92737b05a2.html Nursereese (talk) 02:43, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
Tito's children.
editThe personal section does not list his older son whose name I believe is Ronnie, half brother of Audrey and Tito Jr. Also is his granddaughter, Juliana, the daughter of his older or younger son? Audrey has two very young children, who ride in a side by side pram. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.164.34.23 (talk) 15:29, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
Authorship
editAre any of Nelsonmira's edits accurate? Nothing is cited, he credited the song to Cachao, and added in at least one completely unnecessary line about the Cuban origin. (Version from 18:34, 21 September 2010) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.216.182.142 (talk)
Chronology
editIt's all fucked up. 2607:FEA8:BFA0:47F:44A4:D87:BB06:2246 (talk) 17:39, 21 June 2019 (UTC)
Death date?
editCNN, Britannica, NYT, Guardian, NPR, LA Times, etc. indicate the date as 31 May 2000, not 1 June. —Jonny Nixon (talk) 15:50, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
different birth names and dates in sources
editDifferent sources give slightly different birth names and dates. I have seen the following:
- Ernest Anthony Puente[1]
- Ernest Anthony Puente, Jr[2]
- Ernesto Anthony Puente, Jr[3]
- Ernesto Antonio Puente, Jr[4]
In 1955 he reported his birth year to Leonard Feather as 1925,[5] but most media sources say 1923. Binksternet (talk) 20:34, 27 April 2023 (UTC)
