First rector / Baltasar Fort

edit

The following are the sources which indicate Domingo Gonzales is UST's first rector.

Also, plenty of sources indicate it is spelt as Baltasar Fort, not Baltazar Fort. Compare the following:

I won't even bother to revert back my edit anyway. 49.148.3.232 (talk) 04:45, 25 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Okay thank you for the information. I have made the necessary adjustments. They considered Fort as the first because perhaps he became the first rector when the the Colegio de Santissimo Rosario was renamed to Colegio de Santo Tomas or when the classes started in 1619. As to Gonzales, I'll incorporate the info in the article later. Thank you again. Pampi1010 (talk) 05:54, 25 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Former Names

edit

Hello, I added "Real Universidad de Santo Tomás" to its former names, which was its name before it became Pontifical in 1902. I think it needs to be included because references to Rizal used this name, as this was what it was called in his time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.106.139.64 (talk) 13:51, 2 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Redirected colleges

edit

A few days ago Drmies replaced these articles with a redirect to University of Santo Tomas:

I'm not sure if this is justified or not, but I do believe it's a bit much to do without any discussion or announcement. Can those familiar with the subject comment here on whether this was the right call? — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 18:25, 14 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

    • Recently, most constituent colleges of Ateneo de Manila University, and several Philippine schools have been deleted/redirected via AFD. You can try reverting those (UST college articles being transformed into redirects), then he'd bring it up to AFD, then we'll see what happens, if you want to. Howard the Duck (talk) 19:48, 14 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Howard the Duck, I'm not really familiar with college notability, perhaps it actually is WP:SNOW, but I don't know. Some announcement/discussion before transforming multiple articles into redirects would be good I think, but that doesn't necessarily require a discussion at AfD. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 02:56, 15 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
      • WP:BRD. You can disagree and revert, then we'll see what happens. Howard the Duck (talk) 11:32, 15 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
        • The problem with those college articles is, they didnt have significant or reliable sources. Nursing only had 3. Good thing I was able to edit Commerce's, Pharmacy's and Med's. I cannot edit UST college articles I am not too familiar with. Hopefully, they'll be restored. Maybe, each article just needs at least 10 sources not related to The Varsitarian or UST website.Pampi1010 (talk) 13:13, 15 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

I will be reviewing this article, comments will probably be finished in the next 48 hours! Good luck to the editors! Arconning (talk · contribs) 00:54, 1 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Considering the amount of the issues within the article, I have to fail it. I wish for the editors to make the article up to standard before nominating it as a Good Article again so that it can pass the criteria. Arconning (talk) 15:11, 4 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Prose

edit
  • I heavily recommend using timephrases such as "a month later", "the following year", etc. The article looks more like a timeline rather than an overview so I suggest using them.

Lede

edit
  • References should be moved to the body of the article. See MOS:LEADCITE.
    • Done.
  • Add the Filipino name of the college (both official and shortened version, Unibersidad ng Santo Tomas and Pang-Obispo at Maharlikhang Pamantasan ng Santo Tomas), put the abbreviation in the same parentheses, similar to the format used in University of the Philippines Los Baños. Could also put the unofficial name of USTe.
    • Done. (Please add the longer version as well).
  • Include King in the hyperlink of Charles III of Spain, for King Charles III of Spain.
    • Done.
  • Grammar:
    • Omit with an in with an institutional accreditation.
    • Add comma after country, country with 59.

History

edit
  • I heavily recommend using timephrases such as "a month later", "the following year", etc. The section looks more like a timeline rather than an overview so I suggest using them.
    • Examples:
      • The Royal Decree of May 20, 1865 from Queen Isabella II of Spain gave power to UST for the supervision of all secondary schools. • José Rizal studied medicine in UST from 1878 to 1882.. I know this is related to the article but I suggest putting more information like, "at that time."
  • Uncapitalize Martial Law or any similar wrong usage of the word.
  • Hopefully find a more non-primary source for this statement: In the second term of 2023-2024, 33,407 students were enrolled in the university’s undergraduate and graduate programs, while 7,250 were enrolled in basic education..

Campus

edit
  • UST, the largest university in the city of Manila, sits on an almost perfect square of 21.5 hectares bounded by España Boulevard to the southeast, Padre Noval Street to the southwest, Lacson Avenue to the northeast, and Dapitan Street to the northwest.. This statement needs to be reworked for a more encyclopaedia-ish style, it's more suitable for a feature article in news reports.
  • The architectural style of buildings is influenced. Add within the campus after buildings.
  • , among others.. Avoid weasel words.
  • is an architectural jewel and everyone's image of UST.. A bit informal, suggest rewording or deleting.
  • The ₱900 million St. John Paul II Building, inaugurated in 2019, serves as the extension of the UST Hospital.. Reword, put price in different part of the sentence, but that's up to you.

Administration and organization

edit
  • Remove space between source [85] and [86].
  • A college is called a faculty, a college, a school, or an institute depending on the time the academic unit was established.[15] The "faculties" such as the Faculty of Civil Law were founded during the Spanish colonial period, while "colleges" and "schools", such as the College of Education and the Graduate School have been used since the American period. "Institutes" are organically independent units or adjuncts of a particular faculty or college. An adjunct institute that has attained enough enrollment is separated from its faculty or college and is made into a college in its own right.. Improve the wording just a bit.

Athletics -> Sport

edit

Although athletics is a physical culture, it is very likely to get confused with sport of athletics, so I think the header should be changed to "sport", a more general term. It is a wonderful world (talk) 07:10, 14 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
