Chelagat Mutai
editChelagat Mutai (died 2013)
Chelagat was born in 1949, and was a Kenyan Activist and former member of parliament. Chelagat gained interest in politics as a young girl, and by twenty-four, she won the Eldoret North Parliamentary seat by election.[1] Chelagat and her colleague Seroney fought for good governance, and were interested in going beyond Nandi Nationalism. Chelagat led a controversial political career, often using her platform to criticize the government of first president Kenyatta, who she spoke out against for making land pacts with the British.[1] Chelagat's defiance led to a downward spiral in her political career, and in 1976 she was prosecuted for inciting squatters to invade private land in Ziwa. She served two and a half years in prison. Upon Chelgat's release from prison, she re-entered the parliament, but complex political changes in Nandi led to the end of her political career.[2]
