Dividers

edit

G'day and welcome to Wikipedia. You made a comment that dividers redirects to division and you believe it shouldn't. There was an article at dividers a couple of years ago that was moved to http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Transwiki:Dividers because all that was in the article was a dictionary definition. If you look at http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Whatlinkshere/Dividers you'll see that there have been (well, at least, currently are) no accidental links through to dividers. But, be bold. Redirect dividers to Compass (drafting). Josh Parris#: 04:59, 1 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Here is the old dividers article (the first version in the history of the page - everything since then was administration) http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dividers&oldid=12848424 - you can see why it got moved to the dictionary. Not a lot was said about the history of dividers, notable uses and users of them, and so on. I've changed the redirect to Compass (drafting) - now that you see how little is involved, feel free to do so yourself in the future. If you want to change the redirect into an article, go ahead and do so. Josh Parris#: 05:12, 2 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Nicolas Estevanez - category

edit

No worries. So, Nicolas Estevanez was a "Spanish military officer, politician and poet" in the army. That would put him a category:soldiers, category:poets, category:politicians and category:Spaniards. Oh, there is no category:Spaniards. Perhaps it is category:People of Spain? Or category:People from Spain? Or category:Spanish people? Hah! There it is. The preview button is wonderful.

Similarly we find he can be placed in Category:Spanish poets and Category:Spanish-language poets - except Category:Spanish poets is a sub category of Category:Spanish-language poets an thus more specific. We'll just leave the one in. It would be a good idea to note in the article some information about his poetry.

Equally, Category:Spanish politicians is another place to put him. The article should have more to say about his political activities - when he ran for office, and so forth.

Now, underneath soldiers we find Category: Soldiers by nationality, and then Category:Spanish soldiers. So we'll put that in the article - it's the most specific soldier that is applicable. Interestingly, the category needs to be placed with another category - Category:Spanish people by occupation. I edited the category just like an article, and added that category.

You can see that after each category, there is a | (bar) and his name, with surname first. This to to allow sorting within the category. There's more information at WP:CAT.

Oh, we can also add Category:1838 births and Category:1914 deaths

Basically, just poke around the category hierarchy until you find categories you think apply to the article. Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography may be of help. Josh Parris#: 05:12, 2 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Peñafiel (mineral water)

edit

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Peñafiel (mineral water), and it appears to be very similar to another wikipedia page: Peñafiel. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot 15:04, 1 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for making a report on Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. Reporting and removing vandalism is vital to the functioning of Wikipedia and all users are encouraged to revert, warn, and report vandalism. However, administrators are generally only able to block users if they have received a recent final warning (one that mentions that the user may be blocked) and they have recently vandalized after that warning was given. The reported user has not yet been blocked because it appears this has not occurred yet. If this user continues to vandalize even after their final warning, please report them to the AIV noticeboard again. Thank you! Cheers,JetLover (Report a mistake) 00:15, 15 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Schooner Alexandria

edit

Hi, just spotted this article which you created. A better title for the article is Alexandria (schooner) which complies with WP:NC-S. You may be unaware but there is an infobox you can use for ship - see Template:Infobox ship. The use of templates such as {{cite web}} is encouraged for references. You can usually get away with url, title, publisher and accessdate for that one. If you are interested in ships, there is a Wikiproject for ships. Any questions drop me a line. Mjroots (talk) 06:35, 12 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

I've moved it again - no need to capitalise ship type. Björkenäs is in Sweden. Copy the Age of Sail infobox details and paste them into the article, then fill in as many details as you can. For an exampl of how to do multiple names / ports of registry / owners etc see the SS Empire Galahad article. Mjroots (talk) 17:02, 12 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Operation Algeciras

edit

Hi! That was an impressive and unexpected rewrite. Would it be possible for you to add inline citations as at the moment the article is hard to verify. Stephen B Streater (talk) 21:39, 9 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the compliment. I spent some hours doing that. I am not good at writing and it takes me a lot of effort to write anything. I know the text can still be improved by adding further details, dates, inline citations, etc. but for now I have done as much as I can do. If I can find time and energy I will come back to do some more. In any case, I have added external links where the information can be found, it just requires the work of putting links inline. GS3 (talk) 22:10, 9 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
OK - I might add a few when I get a chance. Didn't want to tread on your toes. Stephen B Streater (talk) 22:18, 9 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Mediation Cabal: Case update

edit

Dear GS3: Hey there! I'd like to let you know that in a Mediation Cabal mediation case that you are involved in, or have some connection with:

Wikipedia:Mediation Cabal/Cases/2010-08-01/ESR meter

I've made the following changes:

I've opened the case, asked the user you mentioned whether he/she would like to participate, and written some initial stuff for you that I hope might be helpful.

I would be most grateful if you would please have a look at the mediation case page linked to above, and participate in the current stage of the mediation process if you wish. Of course, participation is completely optional, and if you don't want to take part in this mediation, that's perfectly OK -- and you can stop at any time. If you have any questions or concerns relating to this dispute, the mediation, or the Mediation Cabal in general, please do let me know. Thanks! Welcome

edit

Welcome!

Hello, GS3, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Unfortunately, one or more of the pages you created, such as Waring's Pennsylvanians, may not conform to some of Wikipedia's guidelines, and may soon be deleted.

There's a page about creating articles you may want to read called Your first article. If you are stuck, and looking for help, please come to the New contributors' help page, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any queries you have! Or, you can just type {{helpme}} on this page, and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Here are a few other good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you have any questions, check out Wikipedia:Questions or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Kudpung (talk) 11:26, 4 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

A cursory examination of this page and of my contributions shows I have been contributing for quite some years and I am not new around here so I don't understand why you talk to me like I'm new because I'm not.
Your objection to the Waring's Pennsylvanians is unclear to me. Maybe you can be more specific about your objections.
I started that article as a stub so that others can expand it or I may do some more work when I have time and energy. If your complaint is that I did not add inline references then you and everybody else are welcome to do it and to expand the article with further information. The information I posted is avaliable at the external links I posted and there is plenty more online and even at the Fred Waring page.
If your complaint is that the band does not deserve an article I would disagree and object and request you open a discussion before deleting it. GS3 (talk) 16:57, 4 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'm sorry, but the tone of your message is unclear. I've never heard of the Waring's Pennsylvanians, so I could hardly have any objections to them. Indeed, historically they could be quite easily be very notable on the jazz landscape. What I saw was a Wikipedia article that can be deleted at any time, without discussion, for being totally unreferenced, which also had some prose and structural errors that I might have gone back later and cleaned up. With your experience, you would also clearly have known that I obviously cannot delete articles.--Kudpung (talk) 17:28, 4 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Taman Shud Case

edit

Hey there. Good to see you interested in the Taman Shud Case. Along with a few other amateur sleuths I continue to investigate the case. On Facebook there is a group called "World Search for a Rare Copy of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam" that has 684 members and discusses the case (sorry, I'm not sure how to directly link to the Group but you should be able to find it fairly easily). Note, I'm not Derek Abbott, the chap spearheading the hunt. --Roisterer (talk) 06:27, 31 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Folly fort, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Canton. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

It used to be that links to articles in other languages were editable right there on the general edit page and I had no problem with that. Now it is some sort of database that I have no idea how to edit.

It also seems like I am being served months-old versions of pages or something strange is going on. Here is what prompts this: When I download French toast the corresponding article in Spanish is listed as es:Tostada francesa an article which does not exist. When I go to edit the language link list it does not show that Spanish article but es:Torrija (which is what I was going to link to).

So, I do not understand why the article page itself links to one article and when I go to edit that it links to another article. I realize the database system now in use is probably better but I am confused by it and will have to give up editing that part of an article. I occasionally contribute some content to Wikipedia but I am not proficient in the formatting and other technical aspects which I leave to others more knowledgeable here. GS3 (talk) 10:06, 5 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

It seems there were inter-language links at the foot of the article (one pointing to es:Tostada francesa) which were overriding some of the WikiData links. I've removed them and the sidebar Spanish language link now points to es:Torrija as it should. benzband (talk) 13:03, 5 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for resolving this particular instance. I am still not sure how the new system works though. When I need to edit more links I'll give it a try and see if I still need help. GS3 (talk) 19:15, 5 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
