Just Wondering
Do you think I would be allowed to create one of those essay pages called "WP:Jimbo is always right". Sorry if I've interrupted your huggling. Anyway, don't hate me if I don't re. soon, I have to go. Spongefrog, (talk to me, or else) 11:00, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
- Sure, I don't see why not. Essays are the opinions of one or more editors in the Community. So, go for it. :D Javért | Talk 11:02, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
- Listen to this, this is genius. If he argued, that would be him being right, so he couldn't argue (the essay would be about how everything he says seems to become policy). Spongefrog, (talk to me, or else) 11:03, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

- lol, that's gold. I didn't know that I was on Wikipedia that much. Seriously, though, all my T'Shael edits haven't been re-attributed to Javert yet, so that's probably why. If you'll look in the history of this page, T'Shael is still credited with edits. Should be fixed later today. :) Javért | Talk 14:27, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
- Aye, T'Shael has it right; (edit conflict) It often takes a day to add all the edits, so the counter will sort itself out eventually :). (See Wikipedia:Changing_username/Front_matter#Effects of a username change). BTW, nice name... Although I still prefer the first one (TSBLD), but that's differing opinions I guess :) - Kingpin13 (talk) 14:33, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

Ok, the new name threw me. I don't log on for a couple of days and I don't recognize the place :) I left a note about this on User:LessHeard vanU's talk, but I doubt he's awake. Does that look strange to you? I've not seen it before and I may be making a mountain from a molehill. See ya 'round Tiderolls 00:54, 15 July 2009 (UTC)
- Yep, I'd take it to AN/I. It's a veiled legal threat, but a legal threat nonetheless. And yes, things change fast here. Spongefrog accused me of stealing T'Shael's user pages. :) Javért | Talk 00:56, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

Re:Ralph Regenvanu
Hi. My auto-block has expired, and I'm catching up on a few bits and pieces before I reset it. Thank you very much for having reviewed the article Ralph Regenvanu. I'm not sure where I'd be able to find an image of Mr. Regenvanu... There are pictures of him in the media, but of course they're copyrighted. Likewise, the only two pictures of him on Flickr are copyrighted. If the article could do with pictures, I'll add one of the Vanuatu Cultural Centre. There's a CC-BY one on Flickr.
Regarding an infobox... Just to be sure, what kind of infobox should be used? If there's a general infobox for Members of Parliament, I can't seem to find it. Aridd (talk) 10:00, 15 July 2009 (UTC)
- Hmm, I thought that there was one, but I can't seem to find it either. A generic "Infobox person" will suffice in the absence of a specific one. Regarding the photos, anything that you can find that would be relevant (e.g. the Vanuatu Centre) to the article is a definite plus. I can sympathise with the lack of free images as I am currently searching for one for Ruthie Henshall. Best, Javért | Talk 10:09, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

My first non-admin closure! :-D Exciting! Vicenarian (Said | Done) 17:49, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
- Haha, cool beans. :) I remember my first non-admin closure (can't remember the article, for the life of me, though) like it was yesterday. Then, I started closing MfDs but accidentally used the AfD close template on my first MfD. Great times. Seriously, though, participating in XfD is one of my favourite things to do here. Wikipedian of the Day
For your further kindness to others, your hard work around the wiki, and for being a great user since the last time you were Wikipedian of the Day, you have been named "Wikipedian of the Day" once again, for today, July 30, 2009! Keep up the great work!
Note: You now have another chance to be Wikipedian of the Week!

You beat me to the punch.
It was only an edit conflict which prevented me from posting the editing stats on the latest RfA. I shouldn't of even tried to beat you at what appears to be your designated field. :P Lәo(βǃʘʘɱ) 01:57, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

- No problems, I think that I've fixed it. I think that it was interfering with some other script in my monobook, so I took it out of my monobook and just enabled it in gadgets. :) --javért stargaze 22:46, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Question
Hi Javert, i was just wondering if every time i bring a article up to start class, from stub class, i have to request an assessment. I understand the difference between the two, and i am happy to request an assessment for anything over a start-class article. Thanks a lot, Chumchum14 (talk) 09:23, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
- Hi, sorry for the delayed reply, but I just noticed your query. Generally, you shouldn't assess articles that you have made major contributions to, but IMHO anyone can tell the difference between "stub" and "start" and if you want to assess an article as "start" class after expanding it from a stub, I can't foresee there being any problems with that. Hope that helps. :) Cheers, javért stargaze 20:52, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
Thank you for the guidance
I was very iffy about how to approach that user name... was it a problem at all... where to take it. The editor appears to have taken heed of the article flags or explanation on the talk pages. Thanks again.- sinneed (talk) 05:10, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

- Thanks, V, I appreciate it. In re to Jimbo, I saw that earlier (Jimbo's is another talkpage that I watch ;)), and I think that it's a fabulous idea. Blocks by Jimbo seem to carry more "weight" (for lack of a better word) than blocks by other admins. What do you think? →javért stargaze 02:43, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
- Anything Jimbo does administratively is automatically going to create a boatload of drama, regardless of the circumstances. I see no need to strip him of any of his user rights, nor the need to remove his honorary status as Founder. On that, note, however, my advice to him would be to step further back. Become more of a constitutional monarch, in a way, with acknowledged "reserve powers" only to be used in the most extraordinary of circumstances. Let the community and/or ArbCom deal with everything else. I think his baby has gotten to a point where it can govern itself pretty well. He may just need to let go a little more - if only because of the unnecessary attention it attracts. Vicenarian (Said · Done) 02:50, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

Trying to get Joseph Brant Arseneau page Compliant as it is believed to be notable
A new concern has been posted on the Joseph Brant Aseneau page regarding conflict of interest, can someone please explain more. Edits have been made only to add more reliable references to the work and research that has been done. Bobuller (talk) 01:15, 2 August 2009 (UTC) - Thank You.
- A conflict of interest is when someone close to the subject of an article edits the article in question. You may do better asking Mufka (talk · contribs) about this as they were the one to tag it with the {{coi}} tag. All I did was to assess the article for WikiProject Biography. Sorry that I can't be of more help. →javért stargaze 01:22, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

- People who add content to Wikipedia with the sole purpose of promoting themselves, their bands, their books, their employers, etc. I find that 99% of the time, content added by self-promoters is biased, spammy, non-noteworthy and generally does not belong. This is becoming an increasingly big problem now that the project is so large and popular. Everyone with something to sell wants a page here; you'll get great Google results on the back of Wikipedia's popularity. It smells and is possibly the biggest current threat to Wikipedia's integrity. Vicenarian (Said · Done) 19:11, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

It smells and is possibly the biggest current threat to Wikipedia's integrity. Vicenarian (Said · Done) 19:11, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

User:Ratel warring? vandalizing? bad faith?
User Ratel is trying to archive an active discussion in Aktion T4. This User Ratel is clearly involved in the discussion.
- First attempt to archive the active discussion
- Second attempt to archive the active discussion
- Third attempt to archive the active discussion
- Fourth attemot to archive the active discussion
comment made by 190.25.101.144 (talk) 07:09, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
- No, that's not what is happening. Apparently you keep removing the autoarchive settings and Ratel keeps putting them back. Ratel isn't trying to archive active discussions as discussions with timestamps newer than 3 days won't get archived. →javért stargaze 07:31, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
- In the discussion it was asked for a "reliable" (according to Wikipedia Policies) source, supporting that Aktion T4 was euthanasia and that any euthanasia is not unlike Aktion T4, because the current article claims the contrary in this section: Aktion_T4#T4_and_euthanasia.
- There are a lot of sources, but at least one "reliable" (according to Wikipedia policies) source was provided in this post:Talk:Action_T4#propaganda_pro_euthanasia_.3D_crime_apology. This source (Alexander Leo, Medical science under dictatorship, New England Journal of Medicine, No.241, pages 39-47) states that Aktion T4 was euthanasia and that any euthanasia is not unlike Aktion T4
- User:Ratel claims euthanasia has nothing to do with Aktion T4 and he is involved in the mentioned dicussion.
- Therefore: why is he allowed to archive exactly all the discussion including the post providing the demanded source?
- Note that User:Ratel posted his first attempt to autoarchive the discussion some hours after the post providing the demanded source.
- comment made by 190.27.99.91 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 17:25, 10 August 2009 (UTC).
- Again, there's nothing wrong with setting up autoarchiving of a busy talk page. You've already violated 3RR, so it's best not to revert Ratel again. →javért stargaze 08:30, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

- Unless your IP is dynamic, then multiple people can have that IP address over time. If you didn't make the edits, the best thing to do is to register an account so that warnings meant for other people will not be read by you. →javért stargaze 10:33, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Just notifying you of this comment I made, please be specific with your rationales when reporting users. Not a big deal at all, but trust me, a small mistake like that can escalate into something bigger. For example, an admin being hasty and blocking a user with continuous vandalism on say, two articles, when they have not violated the final warning rule. That would lead to a whole controversy, which is the one thing that stinks about this project. :) Best, ceranthor 12:24, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Reverts?
Hi, sorry if this is in the wrong place, but I want to know why you keep reverting my changes to the Marvin Gaye article. His birth name was in fact Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr., without the E. I attempted to change the article twice, and the second time I even listed an alternate source, and you still reverted it. What gives? Is it better to be inaccurate than to be accused of homophobia for listing someone's real legal name? It says right in the article itself that he added the E because of connotations that the word "gay" was developing during that time. Also, the sidebar lists his birth name as having no E at the end of the surname. It has the same citation as it does in the first line of the article, and yet you revert it. Why? I really don't understand. I've had a problem with Wikipedia employees reverting my changes before, due to what seems to be an abuse of power. I thought the point of us being able to edit this site was so that we could correct inaccuracies? I know for a fact that this article was correct at one point. Some fan probably added the E because they thought someone had previously removed it as an immature joke. But I can assure you that his birth name was Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr. His father's name was Marvin Pentz Gay, Sr. I have an alternate source as well. It is the same one I listed in my edit summary, which you seem to have ignored before: http://www.nndb.com/people/207/000022141/. Please don't just revert a change without looking at the facts. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.124.136.213 (talk • contribs)
- First of all, I'm not a Wikipedia employee. I don't get paid for this, I do it for fun. As to why I reverted your edit the second time, it was a mistake. People make them. Sorry. →javért chat 06:59, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

If I had a mop...
...I would clean out CAT:TEMP because it seems rather neglected. Vicenarian (Said · Done) 21:28, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
- I'm not surprised! 29,000 users, and the conditions of not deleting are:
- they are not indefinitely blocked;
- they are IP addresses;
- they are tagged as sockpuppets. They should not be in this category in the first place
And they have to have been on there for a certain amount of weeks! Imagine running that through ya noggin before deciding what to delete! That mop would be in a very dirty bucket, I prefer to keep mine clean. :) – B.hotep •talk• 21:34, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
- But such a good project for the Big Red Delete Button! And it's easy - seems to me like you just look at the block template and if it's an indef, and it's been, oh, a month since the block, DELETE. Vicenarian (Said · Done) 21:38, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
- One month seems a short time to me. It is correct, but what if that indef blocked user comes back with a sock 1 month and 1 day later? There would be nothing to refer back to... hmmm. – B.hotep •talk• 21:44, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
- You'd still have the indefed user's contrib history to reference for potential sockery. Most of the time, these are just talk pages with successive warning templates and an indefinite block. Perhaps greater care should be used in more complex cases, but a one off vandal username doesn't need a talk page. (And if an indefed username with a deleted talk page comes back with a sock, the page can always be recreated for the sock tag.) Vicenarian (Said · Done) 21:58, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

- True, blue. But you have to wonder: what is the point of deleting them? I think that question was asked on the talk page about a year ago. And at this point, it would seem a never ending task – this user here tagged nearly 4000 album articles in one month and never even thought about the light at the end of the tunnel until I was there, all bright eyed and blinky. :) Hey, here we are on Javert's talk page, talking through him, and he's probably trying to get on! Still, gotta love that orange bar, eh? – B.hotep •talk• 22:06, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

Until It Sleeps' RfA
With fast-moving RfAs, it's sometimes hard to keep a track of things, so I just thought I'd point out someone raised a question (which I assume was directed at your !vote) in this section. I only just noticed it about 10 hours after the event. Don't know whether it has any bearing. :) – B.hotep •talk• 14:58, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

- The BLP has libel in the history; not much in the way of real encyclopedic information, "XYZ is a governor from Estonia, some info about his campaign". Delete it and let it be recreated, or fix it up and delete/selectively restore. This is an opinion that may not be shared by many, but it bothers me enough that I can't support any more. I hate flip-flopping on !votes, but Question 8 hadn't been asked when I !voted. Best, →javért breakaway 15:15, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
- That's fine. Wasn't trying to change your !vote, just wondered if you'd caught the discussion. By the way, I don't approve of flip-floppers either. That was what I wanted to avoid, so instead of "move to oppose", I just struck my !vote out. @ Vicenarian:haha, well I suppose I should've explained my position on the actual RfA, and yes, I agree that some opposes can be brutal. - Hmm, it looks okay to me. Granted, it's copied verbatim from those websites, but then it is in quotation marks. Still, the copyright notice at the bottom of the website in question bothers me, but it doesn't look like the article creator is trying to pass this off as his own. But like you said, this isn't something that I'm very active in, so if any of my talk page stalkers want to chime in, I would be most appreciated. →javért breakaway 21:08, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
- Okay. Spongefrog, (I am a flesh-eating robot) 08:58, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
- Okay, this isn't something I spend a lot of time on either, but if I understand correctly; while the text is currently quoted, it should provide the authors name, and a link to where it's from (under each quote, rather than at the bottom of the section), so as to avoid plagiarism (although the brackets are good, they are not good enough on their own). We are fine to quote small amounts of copyrighted text (articles are allowed to use "brief verbatim textual excerpts from copyrighted media"). But, it would be preferable to use a free equivalent, the text should also be cut down a bit (there's currently quite a lot), and the source should be better cited. I haven't got much time at the moment, so I would suggest reading WP:NFC for yourself. Cheers, - Kingpin13 (talk) 11:01, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi there Javert :). How things going? A while ago you expressed some interest in archiving WP:RFPERM pages. As DustyBot has been inactive, I've created a semi-automated tool to help with archiving the requests. If you'd like to have a go with it, send me an email (I'll need your email address, as Wikipedia doesn't let me attach files). If DustyBot doesn't come back, I may create a fully automated bot to archive the requests. If it does come back, this tool could still be useful, as DustyBot doesn't archive Autoreviwer and NPWatcher requests. If you no longer have an interest in archiving, then that's fine, just let me know. By the way, I only created the tool today, so it isn't by any means perfect. Best, - Kingpin13 (talk) 23:57, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
- Pretty good, Kingpin, thanks. :-) I'll send you an email from my main account once I get back home, it that's alright. Nope, there's no need. As the format need should be demonstrated on the page in a commented section. I'll check all the pages to see if they have this. Also, I've replied to your email (in a coupla seconds). - Kingpin13 (talk) 12:08, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
Full version of NICE to be released
Thanks for helping me and my colleagues test the NICE interface modification. Depending on when you installed the tool, you were only presented with a specific subset of the features we have developed. We are ready to roll out the full feature set which, we expect, will make the gadget significantly more useful. Before we do that, we'd like you to answer a few questions about your activity in Wikipedia as it relates to undoing other's edits and what you thought of the NICE features you were shown.
The survey will ask for your Wikipedia username, but you can participate anonymously if you choose. To do so, send me an email with an address I can respond to and I will have the survey software respond with an anonymous token for you to continue. --EpochFail (talk|contribs) 17:52, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

Your DYK...
...has been moved to the prep area. Vicenarian (Said · Done) 14:39, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
- Looks like a good page. Bear in mind (Vicenarian) that it would have been better for an independent editor to add to the prep area (Wikipedia:Did you know/Guide). Anyway, no harm done here, the page looks fine (although it only just passes the size test, is there anything else would could be added to it?). Also, thanks for adding the Nokia Booklet :D - Kingpin13 (talk) 16:09, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

Is there a reason you're edit warring to restore useless templates to the page? Clearly the user knows they're blocked. - Rjd0060 (talk) 23:03, 28 August 2009 (UTC)
- I am/was under the impression that if you're blocked you're not supposed to remove the block template from your talk page. →javért breakaway 23:14, 28 August 2009 (UTC)
- As far as I know, there's no "rule" saying this. If you take a look at WP:UP#CMT it says that declined unblock templates and shared IP headers are all that shouldn't be removed. Putting policies aside, there's no benefit in edit warring with a user on their talk page. So I'd ask that you don't do it in the future (unless of course the user was doing something disruptive - but this one was simply blanking the page). - Rjd0060 (talk) 23:18, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

- I can understand Javert's view here. He doesn't want anyone to miss the fact that the IP has trangressed the accepted behaviour on Wikipedia. Once he becomes an admin (and he will), he will realise that we do check page histories thoroughly (although in some cases, because we are human, we don't and we need a few pointers because we are busy IRL, etc). But to call it edit warring is a slap in the face for people who (I know) are trying to protect the integrity of this great encyclopedia we are trying to build. Having said that, J-Man, there is a lot to be said for letting the vandal think they have the last word. ;) Email me if you want clarification. – B.hotep •talk• 00:16, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
- Your last point is most important. Edit warring (and that is what it was, regardless of intentions) is pointless, counter productive, etc. No reason for it.The policy these users were pointing to did not back their actions as "block messages" were not mentioned. That said, I've made my opinion known and don't plan on continuing discussion on the matter. - Rjd0060 (talk) 01:25, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
- And, I'm sure, as he said, he won't do it again. Or will at least think twice depending on who's on duty. – B.hotep •talk• 01:28, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
- Given that others have agreed with such actions, I'm not (any longer) asking Javert or anybody not to do it. I'd hope they seriously consider whether what they're doing is going to benefit anything, however. I'm not in any position to stop somebody from doing it. I just find it completely pointless and unnecessary. - Rjd0060 (talk) 01:34, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

Hello
Thank You(apology accepted;))I decided to log on and saw the message you left. I decided to do some reaserch about it and I am most troubled with the fact of [[4]]. I wonder who could be impersonating me. If it is possible to get someone to look into it and maybe preform some sort of check---such as a checkuser. I'd like to know who is behind this for I feel that I'm being stalked; although I haven't been as active recently so it could be a vandal I've delt with before? Please look into this. Thanks;)SchnitzelMannGreek. 18:27, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

Good point. Thanks and sorry I didn't get back to you guys earlier;)I'll see what I might do when I have more time...maybe I'll consult J.Dealony or just ignore the vandal.;Happy Editing;)SchnitzelMannGreek. 20:01, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
Please go back to your old sig
With all due respect, there's just about no way I'll see a post by you if your sig is just the standard one. :( <prays that Javert is crowned Wikipedian of the Month> --Dylan620 (contribs, logs)help us! 23:23, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the kudos. While it would indeed be an honour, there's no way I can beat out the others who are up for it. :) As to my sig, I'll probably end up going back as this one is rather boring. Regards, Javert (talk) 23:54, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks.
Thanks for reverting the vandalism on my userpage August 26th. I didn't even realize that What's-Wrong-With-Jihad? vandalized it until today. I also didn't realize that an IP I was reverting yesterday vandalized my page yesterday until today, but Divine Alpha reverted the IP, so I'll thank him for that. Thanks again. - Zhang He (talk) 17:50, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
