Etymology

From pre-Armenian *sm̥h₂er-m̥, old accusative from Proto-Indo-European *s(e)m-eh₂-, whence Old Armenian ամ (am, year); cognate with Proto-Germanic *sumaraz, Proto-Celtic *samos, Persian هامین (hâmin).[1][2][3] For the sense development ‘year’ → ‘summer’ compare the relationship between Russian лет (let) : ле́то (léto).
