editFrom Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (zyndʾn' /zēndān/, “prison”). Ultimate origin uncertain. Perhaps originally "arsenal, armoury", from [Book Pahlavi needed] (zyn' /zēn/, “weapon, armour”) and [script needed] (-dʾn' /-dān/, “holder, container”).
Compare Old Armenian զնդան (zndan), Classical Syriac ܙܢܕܢܝܩ (zendānīq), Iranian borrowings.
