Glyph origin
editPhono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *rud) : semantic 彳 + phonetic 聿 (OC *b·lud).
Etymology
editPerhaps from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *rus (“bone”); see there for more (Hill 2019). The original sense was "pitch pipe", and appears to have developed into the modern senses via semantic shift "pitch pipe" > "to supply a pitch" > "to tune, control" > "controlling principle" > "law".
