Originally , a phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *kaŋ) : semantic (grass; plant) + phonetic (OC *kaŋs, *ɡaŋ, *ɡaŋʔ).

Note that the simplified form (OC *klaŋ) is also a traditional character on its own.

Etymology

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *kjaŋ (ginger). Compare Burmese ချင်း (hkyang:).
