Etymology 2

edit

From Proto-Athabaskan *ɣʸikʸ ~ *ɣʸitšʼʷ (to breathe, to rest), later confused with Proto-Athabaskan *ɣ̇en (to melt, to thaw).

Cognate with the root -DZÍÍʼ (to breathe), which can ultimately be analyzed as d- (classifier) + -YÍÍʼ (?), and with -YIH (to pant). Compare also Navajo ayih (breath).
