Not trying to vandallize

Please help. I can't log in. My user page seems intact. You can reply there if you prefer. I could probably create a new account, but I'd like to keep my name and edits, and the info on my userpage. I keep getting a message that I might need to enable cookies, but I've been through the menu, and that option doesn't appear available (nor to disable them). ---Ragityman--- — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.171.187.11 (talk) 15:09, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Which browser are you using? What exactly happens when you enter username and password at Special:UserLogin? If you get an error message then please copy it. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:24, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I typed you a long message, and managed to delete it, so this time, I'm posting it in stages.
The error message now reads: "Incorrect password or confirmation code entered. Please try again." I believe it was longer yesterday, but ...
I'm sure the browser info is here somewhere:
"Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.1-update 1; en-us; M860 build/ERE27) /AppleWebKit/530.17 (KHTML, like Gecko) version/4.0 Mobile Safari/530.17".
I'm now fairly sure that cookies are enabled. It's been months since I logged in: March, I think, and I may have changed my password to strengthen it. In that case, I think I'm in trouble. I seem to remember reading on one of the pages that WP doesn't recover passwords.
NOW I'm getting the message I saw yesterday:

"There was an unexpected error logging in. Please try again. If the problem persists, it may be because you have cookies disabled, and you should check that they are enabled in your browser settings."

Should it tell me something when I get different messages on different log-in attempts?
Thanks for any light you can shed.

Your account has email enabled. If you can still receive mails at the stored address then you can request a new password at Special:PasswordReset. The old password will continue to work. I have Windows and four browsers but not Safari. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Safari/3.0/en/9277.html may help if it's really a cookie problem. Can you try logging in from another browser or computer? If it works elsewhere then it sounds more likely to be a cookie problem in your browser as the most frequent message says. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:28, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again! I'll let you know.

69.171.187.82 (talk) 01:14, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I'm finally logged on! I have been trying to log on for MONTHS! Some of you may have figured out that I was doing my editing while not logged in. I've been using a handheld device with a Safari browser, and I'm still not sure what the problem was (I had forgotten my password, to complicate matters). I may only be able to log on at the library for a while, but the strangest thing is that I can log on to Species.Wikimedia, Wiktionary, and Commons on the handheld, but not onto enWikipedia. I will attempt to load another browser on the handheld (Huawei M860), if support says it's possible. I'm reading in the news that some of the Safari browsers reject cookies by default. I have changed the settings numerous times to "accept," but the way it jumps when I try to log on, not letting me input the password sometimes at all, or not letting me hit "submit" before leaving the page, makes me suspect a software or hardware problem in·compatibility. Anyway, I'm not gone, just inhibited. I'll figure it out.
Thank you for your help, here, and at the Help Desk. I suspect that back last year, when I changed my password, I started the process of changing email address, but never acknowledged the confirmation email at the "new" email box, probably because I lost access about that time. I found the "confirm" link, but it was a year old, and I think they're only good for a week or so. I requested a password link several times, butI never received a link at either box until I requested one from another project, so I guess I kind slipped in the back door. Once I changed my password on another Wikiproject, with universal login, it eventually changed here as well. Maybe a strategy for someone else, if the same convoluted situation arises.
Ragityman (talk) 01:00, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
When I received an email from another wikiproject, I immediately made contact and requested password assistance. I can now log on everywhere except enWP, where I still receive "unexpected login error encountered..." OrangeMike linked me to the RefDesk/Computing, where I'm leaving all the particulars. Cookies are definitely enabled, but I still suspect the browser.

Main Page history

Hi,
I just for the first time noticed that we have WP:Main Page history.
Am I seeing this right that you are creating the history by hand? I'm asking since I'd have a bot ready that could take over that task. It only took five minutes to write so no worries if you'd rather keep doing it yourself. :)
Cheers, Amalthea 15:22, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I do it by hand in 1 minute each day. I have considered asking for a bot. If you can reliably run it every day then you are welcome to take over. Unlike normal archive tasks, it has to be every day. I missed a few days in 2011 so if you do the same then it's OK. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:00, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Right, I noticed the "A few dates are missing" which in part prompted me to ask. It will be as reliable as the server it's running on, which means it /should/ never be down. That's a good point though, I can set up a bot on a second server supervising the task, to raise an alarm in case. :)

Coord

hello,

thanks for fixing the coord template on User:GreatOrangePumpkin/Sandbox13! Is it possible to display instead the coordinates something random? Like in [1]. Thanks.--♫GoP♫TCN 13:28, 30 January 2012 (UTC) [reply]

I don't know what you mean by "something random". Are you referring to the link in the upper right corner saying "Karte mit allen Koordinaten: OSM, Google oder Bing"? That is made with de:Vorlage:All Coordinates. The English equivalent is Template:GeoGroup. I have never worked with it. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:43, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No, I mean the (Stadtplan) in the "Stadtteil" column. Regards.--♫GoP♫TCN 14:12, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The English Template:Coord cannot do that. See Template talk:Coord/Archive 1#Quick one and Template talk:Coord/Archive 9#Link text. I don't think there is any alternative way to do it. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:27, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

MSU Interview

Dear PrimeHunter,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 07:26, 12 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Cabinet of Helle Thorning-Schmidt

Hi PrimeHunter. When I use Mozilla Firefox 9.0.1 (Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2) the image [Helle Thorning-Schmidt government.jpg] is overlapping the table. When I use Microsoft Internet Explorer 8, the image and table are nicely separated. If I ad an {{-}} there will be a huge void. --Regards, Necessary Evil (talk) 23:28, 23 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

(1) thanks for pouring cool water on my (as you say misexecuted) afd on the Spanish accent REDIRECT for the Brazilian tennis player. (2) No, you're right I wasn't clear with the note left at those 6 talk pages, but if editors follow the relevant link I gave to first mention they'll hopefully see the example used is François Mitterrand. I deliberately didn't give Lead Foreign cyrillic example of Chernivtsi Oblast (Ukrainian: Чернівецька область, Chernivets’ka oblast’) because these aren't non-Latin name BLPs. Although maybe I should have to show that MOS addresses both Latin-alphabet and non-Latin.

Incidentally, I'm sure that there's a policy to prevent WP:SHORTCUT to MOS multiplying but WP:FIRSTMENTION might be a useful shortcut? In ictu oculi (talk) 02:02, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think a shortcut is needed for that section and I'm not fond of WP:FIRSTMENTION for a page only about biographies (although it already has WP:OPENPARAGRAPH). If I saw the shortcut FIRSTMENTION without knowing the context then my first guess would be the same target as WP:BOLDTITLE. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:28, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Opinion requested on use of freeware-program example for game of Reversi

Hi, PrimeHunter. This is Julzes (on machine with antiquated browser). I am considering using an example of a game on the article in title here, and feel that rather than trying to select a specific noteworthy game in human play a game simply of WZebra, a freeware program of quite high quality (I have no association with its author, if that is of any import for a freeware program), playing itself might permit the most ideal discussion. Do you see where I might expect serious objections to this idea? I should 'be myself' tomorrow at the college library. Thanks for your reply. "I have no idea" would be perfectly reasonable if that is the case for your best answer; you just are still the most natural person for me to ask just about anything because I really have not spent a lot of time editing yet.173.15.152.77 (talk) 02:58, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure what you want to do. Do you want to add all moves of a software-played Reversi game to the article Reversi, and then discuss the moves made by the software? That would be inappropriate for a Wikipedia article. WP:GAMEGUIDE may also be relevant depending exactly what you want. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:09, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the primary ideas involved were to illustrate A) Both of the two acceptable means of recording games and B) In a clear way why/how computer Reversi/Othello play is relatively stronger versus humans than is generally (or has been, at least) the case for games; but there was the intention of lightly connecting the specific game to each of the sub-sections in Strategic Elements. Is the objection that you have or believe others would have that the game would be generated by software (and so might be construed as promoting author or some version not available for free)? I also intend to include an old quote by a former tournament player of some note to the effect that the game essentially lacks a middlegame (disputable, but with some sense at the highest level of play), along with remarks that a 10x10 version is available and would almost certainly be needed if the game were of the order of popularity of chess. An illustrative game--either from a human world championship game or per my idea--could serve an auxiliary role for the (intended to be brief) discussion of this particular matter. The intention generally is not to provide a full accounting for people who want to be proficient in the game--something that arguably is being done to a fair degree with chess opening articles here--but basically just to make the subject relatively clearer and a bit more complete (by virtue of increased clarity and also in other ways). The objective on the whole is to provide visual as well as verbal information.Julzes (talk) 20:19, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It sounds like original research to me if you base an article on your own run of a program and you draw conclusions from the actions of the program. I don't know whether you have access to reliable published sources about Reversi games but that would be better. You might make up individual positions or take it from a software game to illustrate a published point about positions similar to that, but a whole game seems like too much for me. Some of what you want to do also sounds more like something for Computer Othello. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:37, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I am not in a rush to do whatever it is I had in mind. It is probably not all that important--or would not be--to 99% of people who would want to know the material to be able to find it here. I don't think what I was planning to do was OR, formally. I may not have been too clear on that. I had no plans to draw conclusions from the run, just to illustrate conclusions already out there, to the extent that part was to be about the specific game rather than mere illustration of any old game with its notation. I do have article material, plenty. Just nothing terribly recent at home, and I did not want to relatively over-focus on any one or two people's play (though the quote I wish to use is, of course, by a person). I don't know the purpose of existence of Computer Othello, to be frank. I believe that was started by somebody wanting to make a sale. Anything on artificial intelligence focused on Othello/Reversi does not need to be said in an article on it. What is there to say other than it is easy to start research on it and it is/was popular to do, as opposed to games with more complicated rule-sets? I don't know (and perhaps I am wrong).Julzes (talk) 00:02, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I probably have too much of a library-time limit to finish this article, as it turns out. If you are in contact with Jason Earls, who appears to have dedicated a lot of his time to it, maybe he could be advised if he also has already done any wikipedia editing. Other than that, I will see what can be done by me over the next 2 days.Julzes (talk) 04:06, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Brilliant numbers

Hi, Jens. I just familiarized myself with this term/concept (that I had heard of previously) through Dario Alperin's website. Noting that there is no article here, I wanted your opinion as to notability before contemplating adding one. Thanks. Also, if you have run across any restrictions or generalizations, I would be interested (regardless of wikipedia notability). Things like '...for any base from 2 through 10,...' or '...for all bases 2 through 10, ...' (the latter being extremely restrictive, of course). Julzes (talk) 11:44, 7 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

They appear to fail 1 and 2 at Wikipedia:Notability (numbers)#Notability of sequences of numbers so an article might be nominated for deletion. A search on "brilliant numbers" at OEIS or Prime Curios! gives many related sequences and results. It's easy to be brilliant in many bases when the prime factors are closely together. The square of a prime is brilliant in all bases. One of my interests for sequences is terms as closely together as possible, excluding abnormal cases like the four even brilliant numbers. OEIS:A083284 is brilliant "twins" (n, n+2). A quick search shows that 9472781 starts a brilliant quadruplet n + {0, 2, 6, 8}. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:49, 7 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, so I won't write unless you lean toward thinking it has around a 50% shot of non-deletion. The scarcity remark I made was so wrong because I was thinking not of brilliant numbers but of semiprimes with factor-lengths differing by 1. Yes, would be common to have brilliant numbers in many bases. Not thinking clearly on definition. Thanks. Btw, really annoyed not to have a computer working at home. Will never buy from that particular manufacturer again for more than just that reason (power button, most likely)!Julzes (talk) 15:57, 7 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you do a Google search and cite several sources, including more than one OEIS sequence and at least one Prime Curios entry, then I guess an article would have above 50% chance of staying. Editors tend to require less notability for math than some other topics. I wouldn't say delete if I saw a deletion nomination but I would have to see the article before saying whether I would abstain or say keep. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:25, 7 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, that sounds like a 'Go'. I will probably do it on Monday, in that case. It should take less than an hour, based on what you said about sources, so not much loss if it ends up eliminated, and decent odds to justify.Julzes (talk) 02:16, 8 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have noted that the coiner of the term brilliant number is actually Danish, but so far have not established his own notability beyond this. I am a little unclear on how I should represent him in my article beyond 'a man named Peter Wallrodt', so if you could provide an appropriate modifying phrase I might use for his activities (his employer, general line of work or notable activity area of any sort--as publicly available), it might be very helpful (My language proficiency does not extend much further than English at present, unfortunately). Also, it would be a good thing for wikipedia to provide an option to move an article in creation to the sandbox for editors. On occasion, this might be useful in not creating a frustrated editor who has found that he or she does not have time to create a finished work (I expect to have the article done well enough soon, but it is causing a minor fear I will have wasted some effort).Julzes (talk) 03:25, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know anything about Peter Wallrodt but Wallrodt is not a Danish name. A search found a German Peter Wallrodt at http://www.nachhilfe-gruenstadt.de/html/unser_team.html but I haven't confirmed it's him. If you saw a .de language code then that's Germany (Deutschland). .dk is Denmark. 'a man named Peter Wallrodt' sounds odd. Peter is a common male name. You can just say 'Peter Wallrodt'. I'm not sure what your move concern is but see Wikipedia:Moving a page. You can work on a draft in a user subpage, for example User:Julzes/sandbox which should be linked on "My sandbox" at the top of all pages, or User:Julzes/Brilliant number. You can also use {{subst:AFC submission/draftnew}} at top of Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Brilliant number to say it's a draft and should not be reviewed yet. I guess you got to Wikipedia:Article wizard/Ready for submission and chose "Create submission for review" instead of "Create new article draft". The latter starts the page with {{subst:AFC submission/draftnew}}. The text of a declined AFC submission is not deleted unless there are serious issues like copyright violation, vandalism or defamation. It will probably be declined in the current state but you get a chance to improve and resubmit. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:00, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Okay. Thanks much. Enough information to save the work even were it to be declined, so no rush tonight...is good news. I was overly optimistic about my capacity for completing the thing in one go from the library, and lack a bit of wikipedia experience and other things. Sorry to have bothered you. Right, I should really have gotten that extension as Germany. A little distracted, not quite that stupid.Julzes (talk) 23:36, 10 April 2012 (UTC)And the other above was intended for here, of course, but no need to rush, so you need not contact if you could (and he is probably a little over-involved in any case). I will use that template if I have a moment later tonight.Julzes (talk) 23:39, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Behind schedule, but I suppose it will sit as a draft more or less indefinitely. Thanks for assisting on wikipedia stuff I really should know already. I just have the most awful technical limits right now. But, still, I should have gotten to the point where I can just erase the welcome section on my talk page with all the technical links (placed by Plumbago). I really haven't even made time to start.Julzes (talk) 19:23, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I should say I am really quite upset that I lost my computer while a good way through the process of exhaustively establishing that 8338 is (if it is) the first number to generate 5 primes in reverse concatenations. It would be done by around this date, most likely.Julzes (talk) 19:30, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon, 1-3 June. Registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, then please register by May 1st and mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, teaching, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

We want to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Check out the the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC and our other events.

Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator. Please reply on my talk page, here or at mediawiki.org. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator 01:18, 20 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I thought you might need some food to maintain your energy from all of your Help Desk work so I sent you some bacon explosion Ryan Vesey Review me! 00:54, 21 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Firstly, I really appreciated your help at the Help page. Thanks so much. However, I wonder if I may bother you for some technical advice. May I? Hope so.

All the skins I have tried (including Chic) are problematic: they all make my pages appear very cluttered (excepting Chic, which has the problem of garbling some of the text, due to, I think, the typeface it uses. That is, it smushes text together in odd places, thus displaying words with the letters all on top of eachother). But I don't want to ask you about Chic: I wonder if you know how I can go back to MySkin, which worked perfectly well up until about 3 days ago, when all of a sudden all of my red links turned to blue. Can adding something from the page you suggested I read (Wikipedia:Link color) to my User:Hamamelis/myskin.css change them back to red? The Wikipedia:Link color page was very confusing for me, as I am not very computer literate, and this page seems to assume a lot of pre-knowledge about computer language. I am willing to try to learn how to do it, if you are willing to try to teach me (at least enough to fix this). I did try clearing my cache, and logging on and off, first, before changing the skin. I also tried to edit User:Hamamelis/vector.css and User:Hamamelis/myskin.css (only showing previews - no saving) and the text from Wikipedia:Link color just looked like, well, text. Obviously I am missing something.

The other thing I wonder is, why'd this happen in the first place!? Why did it all of a sudden change like that on its own?? Am I the only one this has happened to? I don't assume you would know, but maybe you have some insights that I don't have. I can't find an example (doing searches on Wikipedia) of anyone else having this problem.

Don't mean to be a pest. If you don't have the answers, that's alright. I just find this all so disconcerting. I am left with just asking 'Why'?

Thanks, again, for whatever your answer may be. Hamamelis (talk) 08:11, 26 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know whether it's a recent change but I also see blue links as default for non-existing pages in MySkin. I have posted to Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Redlinks are blue in MySkin under Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#1.20wmf1 deployment complete (deployed 3 days ago). The issue hasn't been reported before but MySkin has few users. The links became red after I saved this line from Wikipedia:Link color in User:PrimeHunter/myskin.css:

.mw-body a:link.new { color: #FF0000; } /* new links */

For you it is User:Hamamelis/myskin.css. It only takes effect after saving. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:47, 26 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
PrimeHunter, I think it would be safe to say that you "saved MySkin"! The redlinks are now a brighter red than they used to be, but it works!! If you need assistance with anything in the future, please don't hesitate to ask! Thank you so very much!! :) Hamamelis (talk) 13:14, 26 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. You can change #FF0000. Compare for example #FF0000 and #CC2200. I'm not sure what controls the color of visited links to non-existing pages. In MySkin they still look the same (purple) as visited links to existing pages. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:40, 26 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I kind of like the red-link's new color - like pinkish-orange flourescent Play-Doh (a color I remember well, but, sad to say, is unrepresented at the current article here). Regarding visited red-links and visited created articles, I'm getting the same thing. I will experiment with it and see what I can find. But that is much less of an issue for my uses: I add lists of already-created plant species articles to my watch list, and when I save it, it always shows both the article name, and its corresponding talk page; when a talk page is a red-link, I know that it still needs one. By this process I have added hundreds of talk pages, in which case they are now more visible to plants editors who otherwise may have overlooked them for who-knows-how long. But, it would be nice have a color other than purple for both. I'll see what I can come up with. Hamamelis (talk) 20:32, 26 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Question about Wikipedia's most viewed page

I had a question for you about Wikipedia's most viewed page. If you look at the page view statistics for Wikipedia's articles, there is only one thing which comes ahead of Wikipedia: Main Page, and that is:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Export/SynchronizationStartTime

Another Wikipedian in the past told me that you know about this page of Wikipedia, so I shall be very appreciative if you could explain to me what it is. Presumably, it just refers to the times that different people log in to Wikipedia - am I correct? You can leave any answers here or the talk page of my userpage. Thank you in advance for any help here, ACEOREVIVED (talk) 20:17, 26 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know know more than when I posted to Talk:Main Page/Archive 163#Question about page view statistics. Note that the most viewed list at http://stats.grok.se/en/top is still based on December 2010. This is the only month with a large count for http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Export/SynchronizationStartTime, and it was all on one day. Strange table placement on Reversi

Unless it is a defect unique to the computer I am on, the Championship table in this article is appearing in the wrong place. From a superficial look at how it is edited, it looks as though it should be in the right place, but I have it (aside from the asterisk on the Monte Carlo tournament) all immediately following 'External Links'. It should be an easy fix (I think), but I don't know what is wrong with the coding/writing (and perhaps it is just something wrong on this end). I'd appreciate a fix or instructions on how I might do it.Julzes (talk) 15:37, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have fixed it by closing the table. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:26, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Sorry to have had to bother you with that, but neither of the ways I have thought of to remedy the problem on my own--finding what was different from the edit at the time prior to the vandalism I had just fixed or looking at how a table that was correct on a different page was edited differently--occurred to me until this morning, and I did assume it was something pretty simple.Julzes (talk) 12:12, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Very neat solution. Nice work Peter (Southwood) (talk): 06:35, 21 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As a result of some email exchanges via OTRS, I ended up making an edit to Software license to add a reference. The question I received is whether that link is a "no-follow" link. I have only the vaguest notion of what this means, and my quick search turned up nothing helpful. Can you fill me in, ideally, both generally on what the term means, and specifically, whether the answer is yes or no for this reference. (I think the term has something to d with whether the link will be picked up in Google, but I'm not even sure of that, much less any more detail.)--SPhilbrick(Talk) 00:15, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, all external links in Wikipedia are nofollow. See meta:nofollow and nofollow. Specifically, the html of the rendered article says <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="http://www.softwareresearches.net/">"Software Licensing"</a>. nofollow means that the link does not contribute to the PageRank of the target in Google, and similar ranking systems in some other search engines. This means that the target does not get higher placement in Google search result pages. Many webmasters, especially at commercial sites, care greatly about their page rank and search engine placement because it affects how many visitors they get. Google may still follow a nofollow link to discover and index the target page if it wasn't already in their database. Some Wikipedia mirrors do not set nofollow so with time, an external link in Wikipedia may be copied elsewhere and affect the page rank of the target. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:43, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that is very helpful, I will pass it along.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 11:24, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Megaprimes

Do you think creating this article would be a good idea? Or should it perhaps be included in the megaprime article? -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 21:18, 8 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Megaprimes will be discovered faster and faster. I don't think it's practical for Wikipedia to maintain such a list. Largest known prime could make a more manageable top-10 list. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:20, 9 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I expanded the list in Largest known prime to a top-10 list. -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 09:26, 9 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"See Also" for Home prime

If you have any thoughts on an appropriate way of connecting the idea behind RSA Challenge and the unique 2-digit home prime problem (about 49 and 77) by adding links to other articles; I know this is not exactly an editing issue directly, with all that needs to be done here and the relative insignificance of the problem, but perhaps there is some natural way to improve the article that could increase the power devoted to it somehow indirectly. Twice now somebody has tried to put how-to like programming material in the article. I can understand this in a way; because, while wikipedia is a general encyclopedia, there is no broad cooperative working on a problem that looks like it might bear one, and this may be a frustration to a devotee of the problem (which I am not). As always, if implementing an idea you have which I have requested requires much time, I cannot ask you to spend the time and will merely use your suggestion when I myself have time. Thanks. I don't necesarily think the article is deficient as it stands, by any means, but if some easy-to-imagine (to you) improvement comes up, I will implement it if it is not also quickly done.Julzes (talk) 19:58, 11 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, this is also Julzes. I see you ended up having to waste a bit of time on fixes to matters there, so thanks (or I apologize, depending on perspective) and you needn't concern yourself with the preceding. This is an encyclopedia, after all. Not much reason to expand that particular article, not even with efforts toward some meaningful change in the articles it may link to. Not by an admin with no great interest, certainly. If somebody more interested or who has more time than I comes along, it will probably get done then.173.15.152.77 (talk) 02:51, 12 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Something different: Dark Side of the Moon edit war

I read my experience in trying to rectify something in the lede to this article as edit warring. Please let me know if you do not have time to take this up or if you agree with the person I regard as at fault. There is a sentence in the original lede that I have been trying to modestly correct almost wholly by moving material from the 2nd to the 1st paragraph. Most recently, I have pointed out that by the reverter's logic on WP:OR not only must my sentence go but so also should the sentence it is meant to correct. Now, he may have a good argument on this, but he began this by reverting without reading discussion, and then argued I have to convince him and him alone because it was a feature article. Thank you for your consideration. He has reverted numerous times now, and no 3rd party is yet involved.Julzes (talk) 22:28, 12 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You are both edit warring. I see an admin is now involved. I will stay out. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:10, 12 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, this is Julzes again. I don't disagree (and have recommended that particular type of war might possibly be automated, though perhaps it is not common enough to bother). On a separate note, I have just about worn out three weeks worth of welcomes at the college library today trying to generate a curio on computers that repeatedly take power-saving breaks. I will send you the topic, in the event you are interested in turning the concept into a curio (or of trying to).173.15.152.77 (talk) 01:53, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Weak Goldbach conjecture

Dear Prime Hunter,

My name is Daniel and I sign here as avijet. It is about the weak Goldbach conjecture, any odd number greater than 7 is the sum of three odd primes. My question is why should 2 be eliminate from it and not considering a more extended range for this conjecture - any odd number greater or equal to 7 is the sum of three primes ? For example 7 = 2+2+3 , 11 = 2+2+7; not including 2 eliminates some of the possible combinations. Hi PrimeHunter. I'm glad to see you've been helping out at the Teahouse - thank you! A few notes about the Teahouse, we're a bit different (as you've probably noticed!) than the majority of help spaces on Wikipedia - we have a few methods to the madness that make us special, and has proven to work to help retain new editors. We've got a list of host tips that shares different ways that folks who answer questions should interact at the Teahouse. Things like saying "hi!" when answering questions (everyone likes to be greeted when they visit a new place!) and explaining with as little jargon and things (like what is a verifiable source? instead of just linking to the policy) like that as possible. I do encourage you to stay involved, and even become a host if you'd like! You can learn more about hosting here. Thank you again for all you do on Wikipedia! PrimeHunter, Thanks for your kind assistance at the Help Desk. I'm OK now. I was not reading the one heading right on my email sign-in. It said "new email address" which threw me off because the box to the right of it contained my Wiki user name--it wasn't blank. So I thought it was a box for my user name. It didn't occur to me to type my new email address over top of it. Bottom line and good news: I did finally type in my new email overtop of my user name, AND IT WORKED. Thanks again!EMP (talk) 23:03, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Good to hear it worked. The prefilled username in the email box must be a feature in your browser. Maybe it remembers you entered the username in the login screen and suggests the same content for other boxes at the same site. Or maybe you once entered the username in the email box and then the browser suggests it each time you go there. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:37, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No, it was claimed as fair use but had too high resolution for that. The current resolution fits the infobox in Bolliger & Mabillard so there is no reason to undelete. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:04, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
So how am I supposed to know where the image came from. The image couldn't have just come from Wikipedia.--Dom497 (talk) 00:20, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I tracked it back further to File:B&Mlogo.jpg, uploaded by User:Cmalpass 5 December 2008. The only deleted source information is "The logo is from the www.bolliger-mabillard.com website." PrimeHunter (talk) 00:33, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not arguing but if the logo was from the website, then were did the "stealth bomber" come from. Only the text is on the company website meaning the image couldn't have come from there.--Dom497 (talk) 00:48, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It was uploaded in 2008. Organizations often modify logos. The article should probably show the current logo http://www.bolliger-mabillard.com/img/logo_bolliger.gif. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:11, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I may be wrong but the last time I checked what the website looked like in 2008, the logo was the same as today. If you type in WayBack Machine on google and go to the B and M website from 2008, I believe the logo was the same (I can't check right now because I am not home and on my phone).--Dom497 (talk) 01:20, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
User: Cmalpass hasn't edited for a year and doesn't have email enabled. I have already spent a lot of time tracking and discussing this. Why is it so important? We should probably delete it anyway and upload a logo copied from the current website. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:40, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This article has been completely wrecked by a vandal with the IP Address 182.182.31.245 (From Pakistan). It seems this was done to suppress things that are critical of Pakistan. What group would be good to talk to about this, because I have reverted it back to being an article, but it is in dire need of repair now. Also, I would like that IP banned. --Lionheart Omega (talk) 23:16, 28 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have reverted the other edit and posted a message to the IP. IP's are not blocked without warning for something like this. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:16, 29 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Caroline Wozniaki

Would you mind going back through the years prior to 2012 and summarizing the contents? We really shouldn't have a list of every single tournament, including details of match results; instead, a good, clear summary like we have for 2005 would be best. I don't know enough about tennis competition to say with certainty how to summarize, although I could try if others aren't interested. Qwyrxian (talk) 03:34, 30 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

She turned 15 in 2005 and only played two WTA matches, both of which are mentioned. Later years should have much more content. She was World no. 1 in two of them. I will look at match details next week and prune some of them. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:17, 30 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Basically, my feeling is that we should not be reporting even every single tournament result...but I suppose others may disagree. Qwyrxian (talk) 23:11, 30 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There have been discussions about detail level in tennis biographies at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Tennis, but no agreement. Some previous Wozniacki years have actually already been pruned. Wozniacki, although a former World no. 1, is not in the same class as Federer but I wonder whether you have seen the season articles in Category:Roger Federer. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:59, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Would you mind confirming that this is you? --Rschen7754 03:02, 4 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It's me. I created it with my main account [3] but now I have also mentioned it on my main user page. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:27, 4 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You seem to be ubiquitous!

Quite the contrary, I was trying to put the Teahouse template in my talkpage. For some reason - me being sort of a Luddite? Nah -, it didn't work. By the way, did you get the star I sent you? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cocolacoste (talkcontribs) 12:20, 5 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers!

I'm slowly getting a handle on all this. Yesterday I lost 2 hrs' work: due to an "edit conflict" (or summat like that)couldn't save all the changes I'd made to a page. Didn't even know that you could edit a talkpage! Now, thanks to you, I've realised how wikipeople interact with each other. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cocolacoste (talkcontribs) 12:51, 5 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, upload a picture

I want to upload a picture from the Official website of the Prime Minister of Canada, do you know under what license does it lie? and secondly, how do I autoconfirm my account? Thank you indeed very much. Iowafromiowa (talk) 11:59, 10 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Replied at Wikipedia:Help desk#Upload a picture. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:13, 10 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I sent an email asking for permission. If they indeed give me permission, what shall I do? Thank you. Iowafromiowa (talk) 19:15, 10 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I see it was answered at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions#Permission for an upload. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:15, 10 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Low-traffic list to know when big MediaWiki changes are coming

Hi! I noticed your remarks in VP:T and thought you might be interested in joining the low-traffic wikitech-ambassadors mailing list. This mailing list is used to disseminate information and share experiences regarding large-scale technology deployments in Wikimedia projects -- and to let the developers know if something's a concern on your wiki, and ask folks from other wikis whether it's a concern there too. Anyone can sign up to be a "wikitech ambassador" in order to help with this process. (More info.).

Thanks in any case. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Engineering Community Manager (talk) 14:55, 28 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Password reset

I am trying to understand Special:PasswordReset. If I enter the username, then a message is sent to the e-mail associated with that username. If the E-mail address: address is filled in, then a message is sent to the e-mail address only if the e-mail address is associated with a username; otherwise no message is sent. This allows a user who forgot their username to recover. Is this correct? ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 13:31, 20 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that is my experience from testing (I don't have knowledge about the actual code). If both fields are filled then the e-mail address is ignored. If only the e-mail address is filled then the sent e-mail lists all accounts with that address, and gives a separate password for each. If no user has that e-mail address then no mail is sent, but MediaWiki falsely gives the same message: "A reminder e-mail has been sent." I guess the idea is that third parties should not be able to tell whether an e-mail address exists in the database. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:50, 20 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Proposed change to MediaWiki:Passwordreset-text:

Complete this form to receive an e-mail reminder of your account details.

You must have registered the e-mail address when you created your account. If you forgot your username or e-mail address, or no longer have access to the registered e-mail address, then this password reset form will not help you. Please see Help:Logging in.

Do not fill both fields:

  • If you know your username, then fill out the username input box; the message will be sent to the e-mail address registered to it.
  • If you forgot your username, then fill out the e-mail address input box; if there is a username associated with the e-mail address, then the message will be sent to the e-mail address.
---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 14:54, 20 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think {{Quotation}} is suitable. The email address can be set and changed at any time, not just at account creation. The form can sometimes help even if you forgot your username or email address (you can check all your email addresses, and some people can se all email to their domain without specifying the part before @). I had overlooked MediaWiki:Passwordreset-pretext, maybe because it's displayed around where the tagline usually is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:PasswordReset?uselang=qqx. If we make a detailed message then I think it should be MediaWiki:Passwordreset-pretext which comes before the form box and not MediaWiki:Passwordreset-text which is inside the box. If the latter is kept then how about:
"(passwordreset-pretext: 2)" at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:PasswordReset?uselang=qqx and the default {{PLURAL:$1||Enter one of the pieces of data below}} at MediaWiki:Passwordreset-pretext indicates to me that MediaWiki:Passwordreset-pretext might have been called with parameter "1" to indicate there is only one field in the form. If it can change back to 1 (presumably the username) then we should maybe use PLURAL to choose between two messages at MediaWiki:Passwordreset-pretext. MediaWiki:Passwordreset-text is apaprently not called with a parameter indicating the number of fields. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:57, 21 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I used {{quotation}} only to set off the proposed text. Your tweaks look good. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 03:32, 21 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I started a proposal without being aware of this (Gadget850 pointed me here). Let's centralize discussion there if you don't mind. Superm401 - Talk 09:43, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

PrimeHunter, thanks again for your help yesterday. I have another question, if you don't mind. I was thinking about creating two templates to mark the beginning and the end of the section to be transcluded that would correspondingly enclose "<onlyinclude>{{#ifeq:{{{transcludesection|sectionname}}}|sectionname|" and "}}</onlyinclude>". This way instead of writing all this someone could just put something similar to {{Section begin|sectionname}} and {{Section end}} around the section he or she wants to mark for transclusion. However, I realize that I cannot put such code within a template directly. Is there any way around this? KeepOptions 12:29, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see how to do it without subst: which would put the full code in the saved page but not require that the user writes it. See Template:Onlyinclude. You could split it into two templates for begin and end. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:55, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I see, thank you. I'll simply transfer this template to uk-wiki to be used with subst. On a related note, is there any kind of systematic manual on templates that I could read? (And bother others less :) ). KeepOptions 13:17, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You could start at Help:Template but it may not be so systematic. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:27, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your edit to MediaWiki:Gadget-mySandbox caused the CSS of the entire site to explode, so I have reverted it. (Apologies for using rollback, but I could barely see the page.) Reaper Eternal (talk) 19:13, 3 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the rollback. I have no idea how my edit could cause this. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:22, 3 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It shouldn't be necessary to revert. The pages beginning MediaWiki:Gadget- which have neither .css nor .js extension are displayed at Preferences → Gadgets. They are processed as regular Wikitext, so removing one unlinked word and altering the capitalisation of another unlinked word should alter just one thing - the summary shown at Preferences → Gadgets. --Redrose64 (talk) 20:02, 3 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Teahouse

My apologies for asking a non-basic question at the Teahouse (w:Teahouse/Questions#Dead_link_to_media_on_Commons). I felt that I was becoming annoying on the regular Help desk - but it seems you patrol both pages, so you must be equally annoyed wherever I ask. ;) ~E, aka: ~Eric F, aka: ~Eric the Annoying: 74.60.29.141 (talk) 21:46, 14 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. w: is the interwiki prefix for Wikipedia (the whole wiki). The namespace alias for the Wikipedia namespace is WP so the correct link is wp:Teahouse/Questions#Dead_link_to_media_on_Commons. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:37, 14 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your answer to a question at teahouse

Hi, Prime. I'm Gtwfan52, and I have a concern about the way you replied to the fella that asked about common knowledge at Teahouse. We try to be completely positive when we respond to the new users that have questions at Teahouse and your reply was somewhat chastising. I'm sorry you feel that his asking the same question in multiple forums is somehow a problem, but I can certainly see the logic in it. Very few things about Wikipedia have a cut and dried "Answer", so by asking in multiple places, he got multiple viewpoints and from that can synthesize a reasonable way to approach his problem that he was asking about. At Teahouse, we assume the editor asking the question is new, and we try to encourage with our answers. He is, after all, a volunteer just like me and you and does not have to be here. We assume that we need him and all new editors. Just remember, his rate of pay is exactly the same as yours. So, although I thank you for your interest, I am asking you to be positive if you are going to answer questions at Teahouse and make sure that you greet the editor when you do. Thanks, and Happy Editing! Gtwfan52 (talk) 21:12, 28 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

By asking the same question in four different places without saying so at any of them, he makes many people spend their time on the same thing. It seems fairly common sense and courtesy to me not to do that, except maybe if you have waited a reasonable time without getting answers. I first saw the question at Wikipedia:Help desk#"Common Knowledge" Citations which had the most detailed answers. I linked it from the three other places for the benefit of editors potentially wasting time on an already answered question. I wasn't really thinking in terms of special Teahouse protocols for answering questions there. Maybe I should stick to other help boards. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:10, 28 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
