AEK Athens Women's Football Club (Greek: ΠΑΕ A.E.K. [aek]; Αθλητική Ένωσις Κωνσταντινουπόλεως; Athlitiki Enosis Konstantinoupoleos, meaning Athletic Union of Constantinople), commonly referred to as AEK, is a Greek women's association football club that competes in the Greek A Division and represents the major Greek football club AEK Athens F.C..

History

[edit]

AEK's women's football team was founded in July 2021.[1] In the 2021/22 season, they competed in the Greek C Division, finishing top of their group undefeated.[2] Greek international player Vasiliki Moskofidou was the top scorer of the league with 26 goals in 8 appearances.[3] At the end of the season, AEK's manager Christos Christopoulos took the position of technical director,[4] while Nikos Gkalitsios became the new head coach.[5]

In 2022/23, they participated in the Greek B Division, in which they once again finished first in their group unbeaten.[6] AEK had the best defence in the league that season, conceiding only twice. Their joined top scorers were Eirini Vasilakopoulou and Antonia Nika with 15 goals each.[7]

2023/24 was their first season in Greece's top division. AEK made some adjustments to their squad in the summer with the signings of Greek internationals Panagiota Chatzicharistou, Maria Kapnisi and Despoina Chatzinikolaou as well as Colombians Tatiana Vera from CD Parquesol, Vennus Pineda from La Equidad and Yulie Lopez from América de Cali. On 17 December 2023, after an 1–1 draw against Trikala, manager Nikos Gkalitsios had his contract terminated[8] and was replaced by Nikos Kotsovos.[9] They finished 6th with 9 wins, 9 draws and 8 defeats.[10] They also participated in the 2024 Greek Cup, reaching the final in their first ever appearance in the tournament. They lost on penalties to defending champions PAOK.[11] Despoina Chatzinikolaou was the top scorer of the competition with 6 goals.
