[edit]- 1846 – John M. Forbes becomes president of the Michigan Central Railroad.
20th century
[edit]- 1906 – New Haven Railroad completes the property acquisition of Hartford, Manchester and Rockville Tramway.[1]
- 1918 – The Council of the People's Commissars in Russia issues a decree "for the centralization of control, the protection of railroads and increase in their capacity."
- 1931 – The Uwajima Railway receives permission to operate gasoline-powered locomotives over what is now known as the Yodo Line in Shikoku, Japan.
- 1953 – Japanese Government Railways opens the Uwejima Line extension from Yoshinobu to Ekawasaki.
21st century
[edit]- 2005 – Fire destroys the 75-year-old Deval Tower (pictured) in Des Plaines, Illinois; the tower housed one of the few remaining manual interlocking mechanisms still in use on American railroads. The tower's current owner, Union Pacific Railroad, does not plan to rebuild it.
