Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on November 14, 2009.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that the 61st Battalion was an Australian infantry battalion that adopted Scottish-style uniforms including kilts and the designation of Queensland Cameron Highlanders?

Battle of Slater's Knoll

[edit]

Do you know if the RHQ was involved in the battle? That used to determine if they were awarded the battle honour.--Jim Sweeney (talk) 13:07, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jim, from what I can tell it the answer to this is no they weren't. The battle seemed to be largely directed by the 25th Bn's commander and the brigade commander with the 61st being committed piecemeal, so maybe you have solved the mystery as to why the 61st didn't receive Slater's Knoll as a battle honour! Maitland (who is pretty much the authority on Australian Army battle honours) just provides the "no explanation" comment, unfortunately, so I can't exactly confirm your theory, but it certainly sounds plausible. World War I

[edit]

Would this unit be involved in World War I in 1917? As the above WikiProjects state that it was World War II (which would be correct). Possible adding World War I to the above WikiProjects? Adamdaley (talk) 00:40, 19 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

G'day, Adam, yes that would probably be ok, although its involvement was limited. The 61st Battalion was formed in the UK in 1917 with the intention of deploying to the Western Front, but were disbanded before doing so. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 00:59, 19 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Is this page only for regurgitation of other web sites? How do I prove by a link that my additions are true when I have Service records in hard copy stating what I added? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Trooper63 (talkcontribs) 02:19, 25 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

G'day, service records are primary documents and should be used sparingly on Wikipedia per WP:PRIMARY. Secondary sources are preferred. The citation you provided was acceptable in so far as proving the award of the MC, but did not support the majority of what you added. As such, it would be fine to keep, if another source, preferably a secondary source provided the other details. For instance, is the incident to which you refer included in books like The Final Campaigns, or something similar? Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 03:38, 25 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It is from the citation wording awarding the Miliatry Cross. I'm saddened that he fought for the Unit however we can't even mention him here on Wiki-pedia. I guess it probably didn't happen, war records can be deceiving. Sadly I'm not a Cameron, so I'll be backing down. Trooper63 (talk) 09:05, 25 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I've added what I can from Long, who only mentions it in passing, though. If you have a direct link to the citation, I'd be happy to see if more can be worked in. Sometimes the citations can be located in the London Gazette, see here: [1] Further, did you just copy and paste the citation, or reword it?
