Lutheran section
[edit]Since Lutheranism predates Reformed traditions and is closer in thinking to Western and Eastern Catholicism, I have moved it up. I have also modified the text of the section.--Drboisclair 04:54, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
Papal absolution
[edit]There ought to be a special section on sins that only the Pope is said to be able to absolve. ADM (talk) 10:32, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
- Are there any? He might be required to intervene to overrule some point of canon law or revoke some high-ranking excommunication, but my understanding is that any priest can absolve sins – it's just that they might get in trouble with the higher-ups if they're breaking canon law by doing so. And of course, there's always Divine Grace, regardless. — LlywelynII 12:15, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
Lutheran view of penance
[edit]Please note that the reference provided in the article supports the statement that Lutherans reject "those who teach that forgiveness of sin is not obtained through faith but through the satisfactions made by man."
See, the reference (the page linked above) is actually an encyclopedia entry describing penance, and most of the entry refers to Roman Catholic beliefs. The entire page should not be confused with a statement of what Lutherans believe regarding penance. The last paragraph of the entry, however, is taken directly from the Augsburg Confession, and thus, it is a statement of what Lutherans believe regarding penance. --Hamitr (talk) 00:02, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
Crusades
[edit]We've got to mention them. Free absolution-for-killing is the cross Xians've gotten beaten over the head with for decades now: since (unlike Judaism or Islam) it pretty much directly contradicts the faith's foundational scriptures, we should explain how it got justified in the first place & what justifications or excuses Xians now offer on the subject. — LlywelynII 12:19, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
