Many sections of article written in fluent Moron

There has to be a template for this, right? I'm sure it has a more polite name. But, seriously, an article about a purportedly "educational" TV show, one likely to be browsed by parents as a learning experience for their kids, is a particularly awful place to find nonsense like "Due to his animal species he is naturally experienced to execute..." and "Boots' language field is limited but steadily increasing. Dora is currently teaching him Spanish through memorable songs and phrases. He usually aspires with soaring colors or a bit over as averagely as the normal child viewer."

Maybe we should make a list of the many problems like this with the article and zap them all in one go -- it would probably be most efficient that way.

Tls (talk) 19:08, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

I went through the introduction and the sections introducing Dora and Boots to get rid of the worst of this. Someone else must have gotten rid of "as averagely as..." earlier. I couldn't bring myself to take the time to do this for the whole article, however. AlanUS (talk) 02:28, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

Show Creators

Can an established user please edit Rick Velleu out of the Creator Section. This is a serious and urgent matter that needs to changed immediately. Bquinn220 (talk) 16:36, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Can an established user please edit Rick Velleu out of the "creator" section in the side box and in the first paragraph of this entry?

The sentence which is inaccurate reads: The show was created by Chris Gifford, Valerie Walsh, Rick Velleu and Eric Weiner.

Rick Velleu shouldn't be credited as an official creator of the series. He worked with Chris and Valerie for a few weeks and provided the original model of how Dora should look but it was re-worked completely and Rick didn't have any other involvement with the TV series at all. See statement in below story from NPR:

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=89531478

"When Dora made her debut in the summer of 2000, the Nickelodeon cable channel had already been successful with interactive programming for kids, and executives asked producer Chris Gifford to create yet another. With his colleagues Eric Weiner and Valerie Walsh, Gifford set out to engineer a character who could motivate kids to participate."

Toys

Can an established user please edit the Toys section of her page? There is an incorrect piece of information that could hurt Dora's reputation. Thanks.

Here's the offending sentence which is not accurate:

Toys Recently, many Dora the Explorer toys have been recalled due to lead paint being used. These toys were manufactured by Mattel. Dora the Explorer creators have come under fire for not making any statements on this issue.

Here's the NY Times article which says what Nickelodeon did. We (Nickelodeon) were the first children's company to even speak out on this issue, but that's neither here nor there. The creators were never under fire in the press for not speaking out--we own the characters.

We need to have reference images of all the characters on this page! This cartoon rules. I've got the soundtrack. There needs to be more detail and pictures here. --Cyberman 05:01, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Ethnocentrism

Just changed part of the last sentence to make it less "USA-centric". -Dora (Sept. 10,2004).

But, this diversity is very limited, and would be much more enjoyable for all cultures if a French girl and a Japanese girl, for example, make friend with Dora and accompany her on some of the upcoming quests.

In a way that very similar thing happened on "Dora's World Adventure." as she had a friend in France and even though they didn't go to Japan she had a friend in China.Even so I think Dora's new friends from other countries, along with the four other "Swipers" should make appearances later on. Also I love this show even though I way past the age limit. a kid at heart Superx 03:18, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Re Dora's provenance and residence: In the discussion of Dora's nationality and the location of her home, I think speculation that, for example, she lives in Mexico or California misses the whole point of the show - she doesn't seem to live in our world at all, and I suspect that's intentional on the part of the creators. Dora's home appears to be a fantasy world in terms of geography (as well as of characters and situations), defying attempts to pin down a location. I would guess that, if the creators of the show ever even thought about it, they would agree that refusing to tie Dora and her friends to a recognizable location enhances the show's universality. In this way, they avoid the trap of inadvertently causing people to think "Learning Spanish is fine for people in the Southwestern US, but not really relevant to MY kids", or some such. Of course, they may just have thought, "Blue bulls and Spanish-speaking vest-wearing squirrels aren't really found in California OR Guatemala, let's not be too specific about location." Either way, I don't think Dora can meaningfully be thought to live in any real place.

Dora's surname and her mother's surname are different because in Spanish cultures women don't take the husband's name when they get married.

Dora clearly is Hispanic - why is this never mentioned in the article? Mauro Cicognini 20:55, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

I too was looking for information on Dora's nationality in the article and didn't find it. She is clearly Hispanic, and clearly Central or South American of Native descent. I think it should be added in the article at the very least that she is Hispanic and at the most that she is Central or South American. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.35.14.116 (talk) 14:28, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

I think that given Dora's cousin Diego resides in the Amazon Rain Forest and it is extremely easy for Dora to get there we should assume she lives in South America or at least Central America. I also think we are WAY overthinking this. I mean its a cartoon aimed at 2 year olds. No analysis required. My daughter is hooked and she is learining, that is all that matters. Just my opinion.

Swiper

Is Swiper the Fox a back-handed reference to Mexican president Vincente Fox?

Well, #1, it's just a kids show, so there's probably no razor-bladed political satire in it, and #2, foxes have pretty much always been typecast as villains, so it's a pretty big stretch. 71.231.56.40 23:28, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

Can we include that he's based on Zorro? 70.187.219.134 06:52, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Yes you can, that's fine. As my edit summary states, the intermediate revisions I reverted all contained subtle vandalism - I apologise if I have damagd the article, but someone has been changing the refs to Swiper the Fox to "Sniper" and suggesting in the info box that it shows Dora and Boots being mugged. The version I reverted to is cl;ean and I am noting it to be the Last Known Good Version (LKGV) from those I cleaned up. Thor Malmjursson 10:31, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

One episode revealed Swiper lives on Blueberry Hill. A trivial detail, but for completeness it should be mentioned in the main article somewhere.

I just saw an episode of Dora with Swiper, and a family of foxes, not his family. It is clear to me that Swiper is not really a fox, but a kind of weasel. If you know this episode you will know what I mean. This would be confusing to kids, I'd imagine. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.84.145.97 (talk) 17:55, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

Current Events

"On the weekend on May 5th, 2006, Dora the Explorer was booked for the Scotiabank Place arena in Ottawa. At the same time, in the NHL Playoffs, the Ottawa Senators were in the midst of a series with the Buffalo Sabres. The Senators lost the first game, but had to wait until the weekend was over to play the next game. May commentators and fans believe that if the game had been played closer to the time of the first game, the Senators would have been able to rebound. They lost the second game of the series on the Monday.[2]"

I removed this to the talk page, as the relevance to Dora appears to be tenuous at best, and seems to have more to do with the NHL than with the event that interrupted the playoffs. Lusanaherandraton 04:04, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

Billions of dollars claims

How could one category of merchandise possibly achieve over $3 billion? How much has SpongeBob made? Marcus 22:58, 1 Jul 2006 (UTC)

SpongeBob has made $4.5 billion in cumulative retail sales.[3] While it might be surprising or counter-intuitive given the relatively low price of each item, but the volumes of units sold are huge, as are the global markets which buy them. Nickelodeon is hardly alone in collecting massive revenues from its characters; consider that Disney consumer products is expecting to generate $23 billion in sales in 2006 [4]. --ScottMainwaring 00:19, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

Clarification Needed on Character

Someone should do more research on the origin of the Dora character. The connection to the 1971 song by Stackridge, Dora the Female Explorer, seems pretty obvious, but I doubt that fans of the show have ever heard the song. Have the shows producers ever commented on the similarities in the name of the song and the name of the show? Also, both characters were clearly written for children, but the writers of the song were never able to get their children's book project completed. The show's producers probably don't want to talk about this, and as far as I know they have never discussed the subject in public. But it seems that if the members of Stackridge wanted to start a lawsuit they would have a very strong case. There certainly would be a lot of money involved in a lawsuit like this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.160.119.162 (talk) 19:16, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

I'm sure the producers knew what they were doing when they came up with the name. They could simply have used Nora or Laura if there was going to be a problem with the Stackridge song. My guess is, though, that they did it as a tribute to the Stackridge song rather than an attempt to violate their copyright. Soap Talk/Contributions 19:25, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

Even if the producers of the show claimed the name is a tribute to Stackridge it does not necessarily protect them from legal charges. The founders of Apple Computer found this out after they got into trouble with Apple Records. Apple Computer also claimed their name was a tribute but still had to pay out millions in damages. The issue with Dora is troubling because it looks like another case of highly creative songwriters who continue to labor in obscurity while mega-corporations make millions from characters they did not create.

I have just been reading this page for the first time proper, and notice that somewhere in the page there is a reference to Dora's Cousin, who is Diego's Sister. The name listed for Diego's Sister is Daisy, but on the DVD I have (of Go, Diego Go!), Diego's Sister is called Alicia. Could I please get some clarification on this, since both appear to be listings from the original version. I just wonder if I am missing something like maybe Diego has more than one sister, or the possibility that someone bogged up somewhere??? Thanks. Thor Malmjursson 14:23, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

Diego has two sisters, Daisy is his 15 year old sister who appeared sevarl times over Dora the Explorer but has yet to appear in Go, Diego, Go, Alicia is his 11 year old sister who appears once in Dora and is a central character on Go, Diego, Go. My own idea based off the show is since Daisy was seen on a soccer team in a Televised game (see "Dora saves the game episode for detells) she might be a professional and thus travaling Alicia works at their parents animal rescue center with Diego which would explane why Daisy doesn't appear in Go, Diego, go. Hope that helps. Superx 22:04, 18 January 2007 (UTC) P.S. I will add Alicia to the character list to aviod future confusion

Did Cheech Marin voice King Bobo on Dora?

In one of the episodes, I could have sworn that King Bobo was voiced by Cheech Marin. If I'm right about that, I'd like to add him to the list of voices. Criticism section?

Would it be worthwhile to add a criticism section to this page. Some common criticisms of this (and the spin-off, Go_Diego_Go) are:

  • It's not very beneficial to teach children a second language when the English grammar used in the shot is so poor (e.g., "if there's a place you gotta go").
  • Dora and the monkey, Boots, seem to enforce bad manners. They rarely say please, instead whining and yelling at the audience to do things.
  • There is no parental presence in the show, just a child and her (wild animal) pet wandering around to far away places.
  • As mentioned above, why just Spanish? Why not introduce characters of other cultures more often? The show Noddy on PBS does this, introducing children to multiple langueges in special shorts.

71.169.5.9 15:34, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

I take issue with you on at least 2 of these areas - you state these are common criticisms of Dora and Go Diego Go. Let me list what I take issue on:

  • "There is no parental presence in the show, just a child and her (wild animal) pet wandering around to far away places." - Dora's Mom is seen in the show on a couple of occasions, and also older relatives of Dora, such as her elder cousin Daisy, appear at least once. Also if you look at Go, Diego, Go! You will discover that Diego's parents are extremely visible in the show.
  • "As mentioned above, why just Spanish? Why not introduce characters of other cultures more often?" - There are characters in Dora the Explorer who appear when they go to other countries, such as Fifi the Skunk in France, and Ying Yang in China (These are alternatives to Swiper the Fox). I admit that this is not the case in Diego, but I am sure it won't be long in coming. Thor Malmjursson 12:32, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

I think you are right, we do need a criticism section.

Thanks for the response. I guess what I should have said was parental _guidance_. Small children going to places for which they need a map for directions just seems a bit odd to me. Now, don't peg me as one of those "cancel Beavis and Butthead" parents, because I don't think it's that big a deal...just, well, odd. I have seen the larger familial presence that you mentioned in Diego, but not in my limited viewing in Dora. My son only recently began watching it, and we watch the episodes on Noggin_(TV_channel) which are a limited run, I think.

The Spanish language thing is not a huge deal to me either. I am more disturbed by the poor English grammar and the poor manners. I think those are the things kids will latch onto rather than wandering off or trying to tame a small wild animal and would be most suitable for a criticism section. :) Have a good day. 71.169.5.9 13:41, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

There should be a criticism section. I speak Spanish and English but I think the show's bilingualism is a bad idea. It encourages speaking a mixed language that is neither English nor Spanish. This confuses children who are exposed to both English and Spanish in their daily lives. They will blur the distinction between the two languages and speak English peppered with Spanish when it is not appropriate. Even worse, this could lead to a pidgin or creole language in the future for the United States. That would be bad for the economy, culture and social cohesion. Yes to multilingualism, No to pidgins. I am sure we can find a reputable source that will agree. --Jon in California 10 September 2007

I think you're a close minded bigot. I request we remove this whole section from the talk page--201.165.180.187 (talk) 22:50, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

Let's try to be civil here - we don't need to call names. I haven't been able to find any reputable criticisms so far. If we can find some verifiable articles or news stories that criticize the show, let's discuss creating a "criticism" section here. If not, they don't have a place in the article. Graymornings (talk) 14:36, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

I do think it's worth adding a criticism section. I actually won't let my kids watch it because the english (and spanish) is terrible, the manners are terrible, I think it's subtly racist (why does dora cross a river in every episode?), I think the fox is a subtle knock on jews and I think that boots is a subtle knock on african americans. Handy Manny is a good example of a nonracist show which has none of these problems, but I think they're going so out their way to make dora "special" it comes off as trite. EDUCATIONAL

I have to say, Dora The Explorer is not educational. I mean, how much Spanish does she really speak? She hardly ever speaks Spanish. The point of the Dora The Explorer is to show young kids Spanish, not go on adventures with wild animals to "magic castle" and only speak English. How many episodes has she really spoken Spanish in? Anyway, what's with the exploring part? She is not much of an explorer. She asks us to look at the map, like she doesn't have eyes, and yet she calls herself an explorer! Dora, you call yourself an explorer? Take a second look in the mirror, girl!

Your right all she says is hola and moi bien once in a while. Its stupid --Rebeccarulz123 00:01, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

  • Umm... it is "muy bien". Moi, is French for me and is prounounced like mwah. And Dora really has to become for independent. She may be giving children the idea to always ask others for help, instead of trying to figure out things for themselves. 67.81.170.159 20:49, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

Criticism Section

I think we need a criticsm section for Dora the Explorer. She's really not that educational.

The programme is aimed at children aged 2-5 the level of spanish introduced is well balanced, clear, appropriate and repeated enough to mean something. it focusses on simple greeting words, colours and numbers. Exactly as it should. Try watching it with a 3 year old, encourage them to interact with the programme and learn new words, then claim it is not educational. In addition, the foreign language element is secondary. dora encourages children to plan ahead, to think of solutions, to make decisions and guess outcomes. These are very clearly planned carefully and are all critical thinking skills which children desperately need and all too often lack. Brideshead 20:02, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

Unfortunately, this programme's educational value is quite low, considering that children have a much greater learning potential than what the programme is capable of teaching. Much of a child's intelligence comes from education between the age of 2 months and 8 years. The television programme would only encourage children to:
  • Idly worship television characters
  • Learn to ignore the obvious and failure to perform a task unless instructed repetitively
  • Use a fragmented vocabulary that also is contaminated by very low level Spanish
  • Be unable to perform tasks that require simple procedures that must be understood without demonstration, instead taking a much longer route finished by piecing together small and insignificant actions
  • Learn only as much as the programme is limited to. Accomplishing the goals indicated in the television will set the brain to believe that the programme's setting is as complex as real-life situations
  • Rely on others to help and thus losing the self-independence
  • Enforce below-par behavior, encouraged by two of the characters
  • Subliminally believe that lack of parental guidance is acceptable
  • The programme is also aimed at the average American. The average american's educational level is surprisingly low, and it is believed that a large cause of this is due to apparently educational programmes that were actually aimed at the lower end of the IQ spectrum.
Doomed Rasher 22:31, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

Jeez, people, relax, it's just a TV show. It's not as if your kids will just watch Dora cartoons during their day. In the end, I'd rather have my 3-year old boy watch Dora than the Teletubbies. Mauro Cicognini 20:46, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

Furthermore, whoever writes the script sometimes does not remember some grammatical and pragmatic structures of Spanish. I know someone will say that it's just here "local" accent given the huge variance in Spanish from country to country. Nevertheless, even if it's for little kids, they should at least be exposed to correct Spanish and not just something that sounds like it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.186.197.219 (talk) 15:46, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

Don't know if it counts as proof, but in the early episodes Isa would say, "Hi, Boots," in a tone of voice that suggested that he was more than a friend to her. She didn't use this tone when greeting anyone else; she seemed to reserve it just for Boots. Wrightaway 06:07, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

xD It's a kids show, people. Although some kids shows have romanticly involved characters, I doubt Boots has any interest in Isa in that way. :D Unintended Disaster 04:44, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

According to the "Nick Jr. Dora the explorer The Essential Guide", "Isa loves all her friends but she especially likes to spend time with a certain monkey!" —Preceding unsigned comment added by Julsmithie (talkcontribs) 23:20, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

NPOV, yo.

I found this in Trivia referencing the SNL skit "Maraka": "Maraka was voiced by Becca Lish, imitating Kathleen Herles' voice for Dora expertly." This is POV if I ever saw it, IMHO. Should it be removed? I'm Kinda Awesome... 18:38, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

You could just remove the word "expertly", which would NPOVify the statement. - Zeibura (Talk) 18:45, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

Recurring characters

In the Other Characters section, a huge number of one-time-only characters (e.g., Leon the Circus Lion) are listed as recurring characters. I feel that they should either be taken out, or put into a separate list of one-timers; either way, they shouldn't be listed as "recurring."

What do you think?

Politics?

In the Trivia section, someone wrote the following item:

The show began a trend of applying liberal politics into children's shows.

Due to lack of clarification or references, this seems more like POV than trivia. This item should be either backed up or removed.

Leaping over sharks

The text, "Leaping over sharks," linked to the wiki page on "Jumping the shark." This is a term used when a tv show has run out of ideas and becomes absurd. I removed the hyperlink because (1) the phrase is quite specific and "Leaping" is not interchangable with "jumping," (2) it is editorializing about whether the show is still meaningful, and (3) it verges on trivia. Probably could have deleted the who sentence rather than just the link but...I didn't. ZookieByTheSea 08:09, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

Dora has a strange accent

Dora always says things the wrong way. For example, she often prolongs vowels in certain words, like saying "nine" as "niiine". Also, she omits the "t" from words like "important" and "button", pronouncing them as "impor-ant" and "bu--on" respectively. She also says the words for "father" and "mother" wrong; she says "papi" instead of "papá" and "mami" instead of "mamá".--Mathexpressions 13:50, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

Dora is voiced by a girl from Queens, New York, and her parents are from Peru. That explains most of the accent. Fehrgo 09:52, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

That's just the way she says things. 75.90.79.209 00:47, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

Saying "papi" instead of "papa" is common in Spanish. It's a term of endearment, like an English speaker saying "Daddy" rather than "Dad". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.126.229.95 (talk) 05:30, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Feminism?

Firstly this is really badly written:

"Dora is somewhat tomboy-ish, not letting her status as a girl (if any disadvantages to that) hinder her progress in exploring and/or helping others. Most of the times, she wears pink tops and bead bracelets with tangerine colored shorts, dons wavy socks and Velcro lock shoes. Through time and time again, she wears dresses topped with flowers in her hair or on hats, she shows no more hints to her feminine side, seemingly lacking it in her personality at most."

Seriously she's a GIRL she's supposed to be 5 or 6 years old? What possible disadvantages are there to being a girl; and what personality trait is she supposed to show? What defines a girl of that age as a girl? You want her to cry and simper? Show interest in the opposite sex?

As a woman I find it offensive, so I am removing it. If you have a compelling explanation there is the original you can put it back.

Yeah, that was all me. I didn't mean to imply that there were disadvantages to being a girl. (There are but same in equal numbers to boys.) I was just trying to fill up the article. Not the article in general. Dora and Boots' sections. A few months ago they started out ridiculously short compared to Swiper's part, so I made it a mission to put in as many facts as possible and those possibilities are limitless.

HELL NO!!! You got me all wrong. I meant that, for a girl her age, she never seemed to hesitate to get her hands dirty or help others out regardless of how "humiliating" the task if at all.

It's a well known fact(at least by me) that interest in boys, whining and simping (whatever it means to "simp"), and even menstruation don't make up a girl. It's traits of a girl, but tha's not the point so I digress... Dora has never done either of these things, (especially the menstruating...) but without those traits she seems hardly distinguishable as a girl. Just compare her to Diego or visa versa. They are almost exactly alike whereas it could even be said that Diego is somewhat famine. *Snicker* Not gonna add that one to his article.

Er, sholdn't someone post something about Dora's voice changing in maturance? Seriously people. There is additional information about the background to this series and the character that I would like to add, but the page does not seem to allow users to edit it - is this not how Wikipedia is meant to work? Could someone please explain this, and tell me how to introduce edits?

Neal McGrath

The page was put on semi-protection due to vandalism (an average of 5 different people vandalizing the page each day). This means that users with less than 10 edits cannot edit the page. Sorry. You can tell me what it is you want to write and I'll put it in for you, or you can just make a few more edits to various other pages and then you'll have the 10 edits that you need to be considered trusted. If you think the semi-protection policy is too strict than you can ask for it to be removed ... I admit that it does cause problems like this one from time to time but the alternative is to have 95% of the edits to the article consist of vandalism and reversion of vandalism. English in America

I should have the right to decide whether or not to teach my child Spanish.

I don't understand why this programs like these are forced on us when, in America, our children should be learning English. Keep it on Univision.

We live in AMERICA..THE UNITED STATES. WE SPEAK ENGLISH AS OUR PRIMARY LANGUAGE.

In Mexico, their primary language is Spanish. In Italy, their primary language is Italian. In China, their primary language is Chinese. When you go to ANY other country in the world(except the United States), they will not bend to you and expect you to speak their language. You are expected to speak theirs, or at least try.

I don't understand why this is so hard to understand or accept!!!???

NO OTHER COUNRTY COWERS TO THE WILL OF EVERYONE ELSE AS WE DO.

My children no longer have a Christmas Break. Or an Easter Break. Or parties before hand. I respect all other religions, but our country was founded on Thanksgiving, Halloween, Christmas, and Easter "Breaks". What's wrong with upholding those traditions? I'm completely open to having Hanukkah, ect or any other parties during the holiday seasons.

Dora the Explorer is a private enterprise, and as a private enterprise they may operate using any business model they wish to. This issue deals with the government, not a television show. Write your congressman Bullercruz1 (talk) 20:53, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
You ever been to Japan? Of course you haven't. Please be quiet if you have absolutely NO idea what you're talking about. Go to the United States wiki page and look up "official language". Not the de facto language, but the official Federal language. There isn't one. There is this tiny thing called "freedom of speech" that limits the government's power in situations like this. They can't make us speak English, and neither can you.
Nobody is forcing this program on you. Don't like it? Change the channel. Or here's a groundbreaking idea for you: go spend some real quality time with your child instead of dumping them in front of the TV. TV is for entertainment purposes mostly, and if you expect TV to raise or educate your child, you're doing it wrong.
And your rant about "Christmas" break (et al), in addition to being completely irrelevant to this page, is inane in general. Our country wasn't founded on Thanksgiving, etc. It was founded on freedom of religion. By naming all these breaks after Christian holidays, you're essentially disregarding that little amendment to the U.S. Constitution. But you already knew that, being the All-American that you are. 2CrudeDudes (talk) 15:24, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

Xenophobia and fanatical nativism

In find it both amusing and tragic how some “parents” put such energy and passion into demanding the right to assure their children’s ignorance.

Such is the “criticism” by some of Dora the explorer

No TV program is forced on anyone, and while in this day and age it borders on educational neglect not to encourage bilingualism, you have every right to monitor and decide what your child does of does not watch, even if it is solely for the purpose of passing on voluntary ignorance to a new generation.

Perhaps this should be considered:

If your asperations for your children are so fragile that they can not survive linguistic diversity expressed on an animated TV show, rather then venting deep seeded bigotry under the guise of cultural preservation,, let it be your wake up call to grow up and get your priorities in order Cosand (talk) 12:55, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

The Tone of This Artice

This article is daft. Isn't several hundred words on the personal interests of a fictional children's TV character a bit of overkill? The tone isn't in keeping with an encyclopaedia either. I think the article misses the opportunity to convey to the reader the essence of Dora the Exlorer.

I don't have any issue with the guide to the characters, and I'm not really bothered about the nationality debates (to me, Dora seems to be a Californian girl of Hispanic descent).

No, the area that is overlooked is the concept of the cartoon. Dora is clearly based on computer based children's adventure games. Viewing children are invited to make decision which affect the outcome of each stage of the adventure, and a mouse sometimes moves over and clicks on objects and choices, as if the viewer was making selections. Also, Dora has access to resources, the map and the backback, and uses these to interract with her environment, a classic feature of adventure games. Lastly, the whole graphical appearance of the cartoon is similar to a computer game, even an arcade game.

This all sets the cartoon apart from many others, is what makes it disctintive and gives it an identity of its own. To miss that out of the article is to miss the point. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.3.214.177 (talk) 09:24, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

Edit request from gajeam, 26 November 2011

{{edit semi-protected}}

I am looking edit the Dora the Explorer page. I worked as a research intern at Dora this summer and I would like to make edits to the "Makeover" and "Dora's Explorer Girls" sections. These sections have not been updated since the controversy has been resolved and since "Dora's Explorer Girls" has come out. Those are the only edits I would like to make.

Specifically, I would like to request as follows:

  • Please add the following to the end of the "Dora's Explorer Girls" section: "Nickelodeon produced a made-for-TV-movie featuring Dora's Explorer Girls that premiered on NIck Jr. August 7th, 2011. [11] The movie featured the girls using the Map to try to find their way to a concert. The movie also had a song called "Todos Junto" which was sung by Shakira [12].
  • Please change "This is the "tween Dora" whose silhouette created some controversy when it debuted at the Nickelodeon website." to "This is a different "tween Dora" than the one silhouetted for the 2009 Matel toy line."
  • Please change the makeover section from "On March 8, 2009, Mattel and Nickelodeon announced that Dora will receive a tweenage makeover, switching from a young age to a teenage attending middle school. Initially, it was announced that the new look would not be revealed until late 2009,[7] but after a short controversy, the tween Dora was unveiled on March 16, 2009.[8] The new pre-teen Dora might be used for the new season that is expecting to launch on March 2011." to "On March 8, 2009, Mattel and Nickelodeon announced that Dora will receive a tweenage makeover, switching from a young age to a teenage attending middle school in a new line of toys put out by Matel. Initially, it was announced that the new look would not be revealed until late 2009,[7] but after a short controversy, the tween Dora was unveiled on March 16, 2009.[8] The new pre-teen Dora was never intended to be used in the show and in fact was only meant to be a toy line. However, Nick Jr. did use a tweenage Dora in "Dora's Explorer Girls"."

Mentioning of Dora

In the prize-winning novel "Room" by Emma Donoghue, the main character, 5-year old Jack, lives parts of his life (he has been imprisoned since birth in the novel) through "Dora the Explorer"-movies. This is a most interesting and in my opinion artistically highly relevant mentioning of this character. So if the registered editor cares, please add it! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.200.143.101 (talk) 09:05, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

Nearsighted joke?

Hi,

“Dora appears to be nearsighted, often calling on the audience for help locating an object or landmark that is nearby and clearly visible. However she has never been seen to wear glasses, instead relying on help from friends and the audience to locate things she cannot see.”

Traditional story telling interactivity artifact (as not seeing what is on the same small screen or stage) is not a relevant symptom for a diagnostic ; this is coming from early puppet theater like Guignol, not from a medical problem.

Can someone give a evidence, a source, for her myopia or re-edit for a less joking more encyclopedic character description?

Or Martin Handford have short memory and a low visual acuity that make him not being able to found in is own cartoon a character he have drawn and got to publish it as a book to ask for help...

Jacob Medrano is the currently recording episodes for Dora the Explorer as the character of Diego. The episodes he is in have begun airing. Can he please be added as one of the voices of Diego? Thank you. Kristi Medrano 99.52.98.199 (talk) 16:33, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

Having found a profile for Lexi Medrano, and then going to her agency's webpage, and seeing their extensive voice over placements on Nickelodeon shows, I fully believe this. That said, is there anywhere on the internet that can be used a source? Alternatively, can you at least give the name of an episode that his voice is in? (I presume that the name appears in the credits, right? That works as a citation, until a more reliable source is found.) Basically, we operate under the old journalist's motto of "your mother says she loves you, back it up." When an article is up to snuff, we're cautious and require sources. -- Zanimum (talk) 21:02, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

Change the end air date of the Nickelodeon show, Dora the Explorer, to present. The show did not end on your predicted date of January 16, 2013. The reason for this is because in March they recently aired 2 new episodes for their 8th season to begin. So, to sum it up, the show, Dora the Explorer has never ended because it's 8th season has recently just begun in March. I'd really appreciate it if you could fulfill this request and if you would include the recent 2 new episodes in your article, List of Dora the Explorer episodes. Swiper

As I watch Dora with my son and compare it to other children's programming, I can't help but notice but it seems like the program directed towards dual language (english, spanish) speakers (Dora the explorer) is the only program which deals with any type of criminal act in a systematic fashion. The kids are asked during each episode to help Dora "stop swiper from swiping" and/or to help Dora recover stolen items. Season 8 episode 14 was 172 overall, aired 5 June 2014. No episodes since then. We should not list "present" when it's been over 9 months now since it has aired. 174.92.133.216 (talk) 22:28, 17 March 2015 (UTC)

If you are referring to the "present" in the infobox, unless you can provide a clear reference consistent with WP:RS that states outright the series has been cancelled, we should keep it "present". However, per Template:Infobox television instructions, if no new episodes have aired after 12 months, you can change the date to the literal "last date" the series aired, which according to you is June 5, 2014. This means you must wait until June 6, 2014 to change this value. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 23:17, 17 March 2015 (UTC)

It has not been stated that Dora is of Indigenous Mexican heritage. Please change the plot from that sentence to the below plot taken from the Nick Press website below. Thanks!

Dora the Explorer is a play-along, animated adventure series starring Dora, a seven-year-old Latina heroine whose adventures take place in an imaginative, tropical world filled with jungles, beaches and rainforests. Dora explores her world just as preschoolers do everyday, and the show is designed to actively engage its audience in an interactive quest using a variety of learning techniques. In every episode, Dora and Boots invite the audience to participate in an exciting adventure, where each step of their journey consists of a problem or puzzle that Dora and the audience must think their way through in order to solve the next problem. Dora is proudly bilingual and uses her knowledge of English and Spanish to communicate with her friends, overcome obstacles and reach her goals. In each episode, Dora teaches a Spanish word or phrase to the viewers and then asks them to use it to solve a problem and forge ahead. Ultimately, Dora and her best friend, Boots, triumph, and the story always ends with a “We Did It!” anthem. Tiffany.chao (talk) 11:30 am, Today (UTC−7)

What proof is there that the show actually ended on June 5, 2014? Unless some kind of hoax got spread pretty widely at some point, there seems to be ample indication that the series didn't end then and that there were more than 14 episodes in season 8. For example, this:

From 4. Development, paragraph 2:

"There are many memes on Dora that she and her family are illegal immigrants and illegal explorers."

The citation that follows immediately after is completely unrelated, primarily because talking about memes about the character is also completely unrelated to talk about the development of the series. (The citation is, however, completely relevant to all the content before.) I'm not sure why this is needed? Even if this tidbit is, for some reason, needed, it needs to be edited for coherence and the citation should be placed prior to this line. 2607:FEA8:BFA0:22F:A84B:E1BA:4BF0:671C (talk) 03:22, 8 September 2019 (UTC)ML

Please add a credit for Helena Giersz, who was the original designer of all major characters appearing in the series, to the box on the right side of the page. It seems appropriate to include her near the series creators. Her credit can be confirmed in the credits for each episode, as well as the following IMDB page related to the recent film based on the series https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7547410/fullcredits?ref_=tt_cl_sm#cast 172.250.30.137 (talk) 22:59, 2 December 2019 (UTC)

There are 65 other people credited at that IMDb source in "Art Department" alone. Wikipedia articles just don't have enough space to list everyone. And "Original character designer" is not a permitted parameter in Template:Infobox television. 18:53, 3 December 2019 (UTC)Martinevans123 (talk)

Please add that there is also an Icelandic version of the show (called "Dóra landkönnuður") in which Dora and Boots (in the icelandic version "Dóra" and "Klossi") speak mostly icelandic but also explain in english sometimes and there are commands and other characters speaking english (like Tico (Tikó) or her grandmother). 65leonie (talk) 14:41, 3 June 2020 (UTC)

Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made. This show has been surely translated into many languages; whether listing more is relevant is an open question; but ideally this requires a reliable source mentioning this. The sentence about the 'Grumpy Old Troll' under Plot looks sketchy: "... who challenges them with a riddle before permitting them the past that needs to be solved with the viewer's help."

I believe that this sentence should be changed to this or something similar: "... who challenges them with a riddle that needs to be solved with the viewer's help before permitting them to pass" Porcupo (talk) 13:37, 21 November 2020 (UTC)

Well

I added a note next to the end date just in case the end date doesn't get changed. We might change it if no Season 9 by August 9, 2020. BaldiBasicsFan (talk) 04:27, 13 March 2020 (UTC)

I have restored the {{Dubious}} tag: the issue is not that the series ended in "2019", it's that it actually ended in 2015 – 6 episodes were never aired in the U.S. until 2019, but those episodes were actually released all the way back in 2015 (internationally). So a "2019" end date on this series is completely misleading. --IJBall (contribstalk) 01:38, 8 April 2021 (UTC)

Series end date

 – more appropriate here. Geraldo Perez (talk) 20:02, 23 August 2019 (UTC)

Where is the proof that Dora the Explorer has finished its run? Despite the claim that it "ended on August 9, 2019" (the same day Dora and the Lost City of Gold premiere... coincidence?!), I don't see any sourcing at the article that confirms this. This is directly relevant because we have a potentially WP:DE IPv6 editing this same thing at the Nickelodeon template articles... TIA. --IJBall (contribstalk) 15:21, 23 August 2019 (UTC)

@IJBall: The whole thing is a screwed up mess. The show was over in June 5, 2014 with 6 episodes that aired outside the US but didn't air until recently in the US as part of the lead up to the film. No question that there are no more episodes. The date of the final airing of the final six in the US is being pushed as the final air date of the US run. Lots of edit conflict in the ep list page about this and whether or not last airing is when the last ep aired somewhere or if only the US last airing counts. Geraldo Perez (talk) 15:40, 23 August 2019 (UTC)
Seeing as you seem to know something about this, I would advise that you rewrite the lede to reflect all of this, incl. any relevant sourcing to back all of this up (as this is definitely a case where sourcing in the lede will help with the verification of all of this)... --IJBall (contribstalk) 15:43, 23 August 2019 (UTC)
@IJBall: What I know is from going over the edits and edit summaries in the main article and list of episodes page as part of looking into your question about this. This is not a article I watch. The article was stable with last aired date in 2014 until recently when Nick decided to air the last 6 episodes in the US. Futon critic supports the air dates in the US of the last episodes and outside US dates are covered in the episode list entries for those episodes as notes. I agree something about this should be in the lead. I may get to it if one of the regular editors of the topic doesn't. Geraldo Perez (talk) 15:58, 23 August 2019 (UTC)
Yeah, it looks like 5 of the "last 6" episodes aired outside the U.S. back in 2015, and the sixth was released on DVD the same year, so a "series end date" of "2019" is actually quite misleading. I'm not sure how I'd handle that in terms of the "air dates" however. There may need to be a Talk page discussion at the article about all of this... But the lede definitely needs to reflect the fact that the series effectively ended back in 2014, and these "last 6 episodes" were just released/aired later. Hopefully, there's been some kind of WP:RS coverage to back all of this up... --IJBall (contribstalk) 16:19, 23 August 2019 (UTC)
After a quick look around, finding anything that confirms the show ever "ended" is difficult. Yes, in 2014, the show got a spinoff, but none of those articles confirm the end of the original Dora. So far, the only thing I've found is this 2017 Variety article which states that "The animated "Dora the Explorer" television series ran on Nickelodeon from 2000-2014 with 172 episodes aired..." (note: this "172 episodes" figure does not include those last 6 episodes...) This Comicbook.com source makes the same basic claim. But not sure, what to do here – I'm still of the opinion that putting a "2019 end date" (or "present") is basically a WP:ASTONISH problem... --IJBall (contribstalk) 19:21, 23 August 2019 (UTC)
@IJBall: The list of episodes article now seems somewhat stable with a 2019 end date for the last season. Main article should reflect that. As long as the facts of what actually happened are in the article the summary information placed in the infobox is covered. Basically first aired and last aired are correct. I think saying present for last aired is not supported by the facts we know. There isn't going to be more episodes, the series is done. A statement in the lead that explains what happened should be sufficient for reader understanding. The Variety article supports the original 2014 end date and ep count. Futon has the info on the last 6 episodes. Geraldo Perez (talk) 19:37, 23 August 2019 (UTC)
This is a situation where I don't think the "U.S." airdates should be the ones used for the final six episodes. But I'm still looking for a WP:RS that mentions these final six episodes. So far, all I've found it a Nickalive post, which doesn't cut it as a WP:RS. It's disappointing that Nickelodeon didn't release a press release about these episodes that could be found at The Futon Critic... --IJBall (contribstalk) 19:40, 23 August 2019 (UTC)
FWIW, TV Guide supports listing the 2015 (non-U.S.) airdates, though Amazon also supports using the 2019 dates. So, this can probably be argued either way... Regardless, the lede of the Dora and LoE article needs to be very clear about what happened here (even though I can't seem to find a WP:RS for the 2019 airing of those last 6 episodes...). P.S. It may be a good idea to move this entire discussion to Talk:Dora the Explorer... --IJBall (contribstalk) 19:47, 23 August 2019 (UTC)
I've tried reading this whole conversation, but I'm confused on why Futon Critic and Amazon/YouTube are not considered WP:RS for the U.S. airdates of these episodes. Also, there's mention of, "the "U.S." airdates should be the ones used for the final six episodes," but shouldn't they be used? Even if they aired years later, the U.S. is the country of origin, as Dora is an American series. Also, I know the video is not WP:RS, but worth mentioning that the promo the used for "Dora Saves Fairytale Land!" says it is a, "never-before-seen special". The airings of these episodes also include the "New" on-screen bug, taking a look at my DVR's recording of "Let's Go to Music School" on August 9. Magitroopa (talk) 21:54, 23 August 2019 (UTC)

The issue is that it's confusing to readers. I can't think of another example where a TV show ended, and then its "final 6 episodes" aired five years later. Putting the end-date for this series as "2019" strikes me effectively as a WP:ASTONISH-type violation. Also, the point was, the "never seen" thing is highly misleading – they've "never aired on Nickelodeon before", but all six of these episode were in fact released in 2015 (either on DVD, or outside the U.S.). So, again, it's really quite misleading to declare that the series "ended" in 2019, when it actually ended in 2014–2015 (which is exactly how this article actually had it for the last 5 or so years). At the least, the lede of the article needs to make this very clear. In addition, I would also argue that the "end date" in the infobox should not be the 2019 date, but instead should be the 2015 date (with a 'Note' attached to that that 6 episodes didn't air in the United States until 2019). --IJBall (contribstalk) 00:18, 24 August 2019 (UTC)

FTR, this is how I would handle the end date in the infobox: August 14, 2000 (2000-08-14) – June 2, 2015 (2015-06-02)[Note 1]

References

  1. ^ While the final six episodes of the series didn't air on Nickelodeon in the United States until July 7 – August 8, 2019, five of these episode were broadcast in Canada and the United Kingdom in April 2015, and the sixth was released on DVD on June 2, 2015.
I think this explains everything clearly... The details can then be covered in the lede and article – ditto the lede of the LoE article. --IJBall (contribstalk) 00:31, 24 August 2019 (UTC)
Follow-up: If no one else comments or objects, I intend to make the changes I have proposed to this article in the near future. I'll also have to work on the lede of and the series overview table at the LoE article, though I don't intend to change anything in the actual episodes table there. --IJBall (contribstalk) 15:57, 25 August 2019 (UTC)
I like that as a solution. Mismatch with the list of episode page may be an issue. The dates and notes for the final 6 episodes would need to be reversed to match the wording in the main article. Originally ep list had original release date of the episode, not air date on original network, should go back to that and add note about the delayed air date. Geraldo Perez (talk) 16:25, 25 August 2019 (UTC)
OK, I guess I can do that... I'll definitely be adding the Variety and Comicbook.com sources to the article(s), as they definitely verify that the show ended c.2014. --IJBall (contribstalk) 16:36, 25 August 2019 (UTC)

information Note: I will be updating the two articles, as per the discussion above, in the near future, as there have been no objections to restoring the "2015" end date as the "most accurate" determination of the series' wrap-up. --IJBall (contribstalk) 15:18, 21 September 2019 (UTC)

I'm confused. We're not reporting the series wrap date, we're just reporting the last time a new episode aired. I believe that's why the parameter is even named thus. As such, albeit unsourced, August 9 would be the last time a new episode aired in the context of the series being over since the network hasn't officially announced it. The fact that there was an extremely long gap between two episodes (2014 and 2019) doesn't seem relevant. See Bubble Guppies, which was renewed after several years of nothing, where it was assumed over. We're not going to be reporting October 21, 2016, as the last aired date. Amaury21:31, 21 September 2019 (UTC)
No, the series ended in 2014, when they did the spin-off, Dora and Friends: Into the City! No source reports an "official ending/cancellation", but it's clear that production on the series ended in 2014. Six episodes were then either broadcast outside the U.S., or released on video, in 2015. That was the state this and the LoE articles were in for five years. Then Nick finally aired the final six episodes in the U.S. in 2019, before the release of the feature film, and for some reason people thought it was then "necessary" to change the "end dates" to the Nick 2019 airings. Clearly, that should never have happened – the series actually ended in 2014–2015, and has been dead ever since. The 2019 U.S. airings changes none of that, and listing a "2019 end date" is just massively confusing at this point, which is why I proposed what I propose above. --IJBall (contribstalk) 01:45, 22 September 2019 (UTC)
Technically speaking, "last aired" (if the infobox parameter is what we're talking about) is for the final airdate on the original network (i.e. Nick in the US, its country of origin). (Or the last airing of an episode if the series hasn't concluded its produced run but the last episode aired on its original network was more than a year ago.) Airings before that in English-speaking countries can and should probably be discussed/enumerated in the prose (which I think is the style guideline for this kind of situation as-is), though that's not what the infobox parameter is for. As Told by Ginger (which uses the airdate of the last episode that didn't premiere on NickSplat for its infobox date and clarifies in the prose how episodes aired/were released) and My Life as a Teenage Robot (which uses the 2009 Nicktoons Network airdates instead of the 2007 Asian airdates, which are mentioned in the prose or notes) might be good examples of similar Nick series with this predicament, though neither are super high quality in terms of Wikipedia/Wikiproject quality criteria. - Purplewowies (talk) 18:32, 24 September 2019 (UTC)
I still think this is a WP:IAR situation, because listing a "2019" ending date is highly, highly misleading in the case of this series – it ended 2014–2015. The fact that 6 episodes didn't air on Nick until 5 years(!) after they were aired elsewhere or released on video doesn't change this fact. That's why I think listing the 2015 release dates, and then supplementing this with a note about the 2019 U.S. airings is the best course of action in this case... Of course, all of this can/should be explained in more detail in the article's prose. --IJBall (contribstalk) 13:44, 4 November 2019 (UTC)

To update, I haven't forgotten about this, and plan to implement the proposed changes in the next week or two. For context, adding a note similar to the one I just did at Veronica's Closet is what I have in mind for this article and the LoE article. --IJBall (contribstalk) 19:37, 27 December 2019 (UTC)

And bumping this so it doesn't get archived for a while – something needs to be done about this, because claiming the series "ended in 2019" is flat-out misleading, if not downright wrong. --IJBall (contribstalk) 01:41, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
For an example on how I think this should be handled, please see what was done as List of As Told by Ginger episodes, here. The solution for this TV series should be something similar – it certainly didn't "end" in 2019. --IJBall (contribstalk) 15:19, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
