Genome sequenced

[edit]
Because there is also a draft sequence for Elaeis oleifera announced in the same paper, I think that information would be good to have on the Elaeis page, and have added it there. Sminthopsis84 (talk) 02:07, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Cross-breeding

[edit]

In the third paragraph in the section "Cross-breeding", there was a capital "D" followed by a notation, "clarification needed". I took a guess and changed the "D" to "Deli dura" and explained my reasoning in an edit summary. I don't know whether the "D" referred to "Deli dura" or just "dura". It would be helpful if someone who knew the subject could review this edit and determine whether it is correct, and if not, correct it. Once the "D" is correctly clarified, the notation "clarification needed" can be removed. – CorinneSD (talk) 17:12, 22 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The present article isn't nearly as bad as palm oil or economic history of Africa, but it still is very much overly focused on Malaysian cultivation: Africa preceded it and continues to grow it; Indonesia has overtaken Malaysia as the present center of the world's harvest. Similarly, several oil aspects need to be moved over to palm oil; all of the treatment of deforestation and endangered species issues need to be removed from that article and brought over here. (The processing of the oil isn't causing the deforestation or environmental issues: the procedures of harvesting these trees are.) — LlywelynII 14:51, 26 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I don't agree that environmental issues and deforestation discussion belongs on a page about this species, Elaeis guineensis. If there were no oil industry, there'd be no cultivation and hence no environmental issues. Sminthopsis84 (talk) 17:28, 26 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Domestication time

[edit]

Hi @Mat Kiyan: Are you sure about this? I added this after 2009 but I said 2009 because I based this on Purugganan & Fuller. I'm not an expert on this and maybe you are. Either way it would be nice to have a source showing this is still unknown. Invasive Spices (talk) 2 December 2022 (UTC)

Sorry for the late reply. I didn't realise how the old date was from Purugganan & Fuller itself now that you pointed that out, my mind just quickly registered to correct at the time. You can undo that back if you want (if that new citation still doesn't seem to add up), it's my bad. --Mat Kiyan (talk) 20:24, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • It forced me to go find Okolo that actually does push the date up to almost the present day. So that was useful. I have corrected/added[1] it. Invasive Spices (talk) 4 January 2023 (UTC)
