List
[edit]We have both a Gill (name) and Gill (clan). This one is a list while the other one goes in to the history of the surname, primarily on the South Asian side (but it does mention other aspects). I've moved the list of names here from there, it's in drastic need of a cleanup. While some may suggest the articles on the South Asian and European surnames should be seperated, given that there appears to be suggestion they may have the same origin, I'm not sure if that's a wise idea. Change from Gill to Loi
[edit]The Change from Gill to Loi
Centuries ago in Punjab, during Mughal consolidation in the late 16th century, some Punjabi and Sikh groups faced increasing pressure. To protect themselves from Mughal authorities, they decided to change their surnames to names which had no history in Punjab and were highly unheard of to hide their identity.
Some groups such as the Gills adopted the name Loi, integrating it into their identity while maintaining a low profile. Over time, “Loi” replaced “Gill” in official and social contexts. This strategic name change helped the group navigate political challenges and preserve their heritage under a new guise. Today Loi carries a similar background to the name Gill, following the change of name. Lois today do not commonly use Gill, as most are unaware of the change of surname, however some have returned to their original identity as Gills. Ryanatwal30 (talk) 14:36, 27 July 2024 (UTC)

[edit]There is a contradiction between jewish surname gill and indian surname gill. Page must have to be seperated as it creates confusion among jewish users. HistorianV (talk) 06:53, 19 September 2024 (UTC)
