Quoting from the introduction to the 'Sweet Gwendoline' collection: "The family was apparently upper-middle class, but was not related to the British bank of the same name, as has been frequently misstated... In response to this very question (in 1979), one of John's sisters, a retired school teacher, replied: 'I'm afraid that there is no truth what-so-ever that we are related or even remotely connected with the Bank of Coutts (I have often wished we were!)'" --Calair 13:14, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That looks worth mentioning in the article. Just Googling: would the bio here be viewed as a reliable source? Gordonofcartoon 14:13, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

and i love him

It's pretty much a self-published source, which is generally discouraged (see WP:SPS). That said, it looks as if a lot of the information there is drawn directly from the 'Sweet Gwendoline' intro anyway, so it should be reasonably accurate. I don't have time to go through the whole thing, but I will add the bit about Coutts to the article. --Calair 14:34, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Does anybody know who owns the rights to Willie's/Coutts' work?--Mightyfastpig (talk) 22:57, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(Where does this tale about John A. S. Coutts and Borges come from? In 1938, Coutts was living in Sydney, not in Melbourne. I have several letters from Coutts to a friend in Chicago, dated 1937 & '38, in which he discusses various things, but makes no mention of Borges. There may have been someone named "Coutts" who was interested in Borge, but, in Australia, at least, Coutts is a common name. – J. B. Quotes

[edit]

"Where does a complete circle begin or end? Anderd doesn't fashion move in a circle?"

I'm sorry.... what? Discordia23 (talk) 11:34, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I saw this too and had just been about to edit it, having found a source that says that the word in the quote is "And", not "Anderd". But then I noticed that someone had linked "Anderd" to the Wikipedia article for Amherstburg, Ontario ... which would not, I presume, have been done unless the editor knew that was what the quote referred to -- especially as Amherstburg, while not named "Anderd", is comprised in part of an area apparently known in the past as "Anderdon" -- though that begs another question, to wit, if it was known as Anderdon, why would the quote refer to it as "Anderd"?
I think the text in the article is wrong, should be "and" as per the below source, but I'm a bit hesitant to make that change as many other sources do repeat "Anderd" and this Amherstburg article link is throwing me for a loop.

Update: Zeroed in on vandalism dated 21:59, 4 March 2021‎ by 2603:8081:610a:932c:71a2:a4ce:8e3f:2590 which, in addition to the one addressed in this thread (and one I corrected previously), included "Bizarre is for those who have the courage of their own" -> "the sown convictions." This guy was sneaky, and all of his vandalism stood for over 3 years. (No other contributions from his IP that I can see.) I'm making the final corrections now. Al Begamut (talk) 21:59, 23 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, when I was researching to figure out the correct quotation for that "Anderd" line, etc., the majority of search results said Anderd, and fewer said "And". Having found that "Anderd" was one of multiple acts of vandalism to this article by the same IP (as described above), I now see that every "source" on the web using "Anderd" blindly took that line from this Wikipedia page sometime between the 2021 vandalism and my fix today. Ridiculous.
The following are the most blatant examples of websites guilty thereof:
