Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: moved. Rough consensus to move the article to Lukas Hradecky (non-admin closure) BilledMammal (talk) 13:58, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
Lukáš Hrádecký → ? – This was discussed at fi-wiki where Hradecky himself (allegedly) wrote that his name is "Lukas Hradecký" on his Finnish passport and his Christian name and the name on his Slovak passport is "Lukáš Hradecký". So, if we don't use the name on his Finnish passport (because I don't know if there are any reliable sources available), then, at least, the á in his surname should be changed to "a" (some Slovak sources:[1][2][3] and more Google hits from .sk websites: [1]).

- Per WP:COMMONNAME this would depend on whichever spelling is most commonly used by reliable sources. TylerBurden (talk) 12:36, 25 January 2023 (UTC)
- From what I gather, Lukas Hradecky without any diacritics seems to be the most common name used on Finnish news websites: Yle, Helsingin Sanomat, Iltalehti, Ilta-Sanomat. English-language news websites seem to use both Lukas Hradecky and Lukáš Hrádecký: Google News. I'm not sure why there's "á" in his surname in so many sources. Maybe someone from the Wikipedia:WikiProject Slovakia could enlighten me what's the difference between "Hradecký" and "Hrádecký". 87.95.204.105 (talk) 15:57, 25 January 2023 (UTC)
- I left a request for help on that WikiProject's talk page. 87.95.204.105 (talk) 00:57, 28 January 2023 (UTC)
A quick history: The article's name was Lucas Hradecky from 15 January 2009 to 13 February 2009 when it was moved without an edit summary to Lukáš Hrádecký. Then, on 12 September 2009, it was moved to Lukas Hradecky with the edit summary: he’s Finnish so I’m not convinced the Slovak ortography should be used; besides, the correct Slovak form is apparently Hradecký, not Hrádecký
. And then, on 8 August 2017, it was moved back to its current name Lukáš Hrádecký with the edit summary: Diacritics.

- Played for Finland, on that basis Support - "Born in Bratislava, present-day Slovakia,[4] Hrádecký was raised in the Finnish city of Turku from the age of one" - this is the issue. Not whether dumb low MOS font sources use dumb low MOS fonts. In ictu oculi (talk) 20:41, 25 January 2023 (UTC)

- Move to Lukas Hradecky - English-language sources use both versions (with and without diacritics), but without seems to be more common, and the player himself spells it without on social media (see Instagram for example). GiantSnowman 21:34, 25 January 2023 (UTC)
- @GiantSnowman: agree with the move, but not for Instagram reasons, we've found before people casually not full spelling their names on phone social media apps. Keyboard issues and 'look' not a WP:RS. In ictu oculi (talk) 09:49, 26 January 2023 (UTC)

- @Ortizesp: which name do you support? 87.95.204.105 (talk) 00:57, 28 January 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose If I look into the References and External links section, Lukáš Hrádecký is the most common name, used by reliable sources like soccerway, national-football-teams.com, fussballdaten.de and bdfutbol.com. It is even used by many Finnish and Danish sources. It appears without diacritics especially where diacritics are not used as a standard, e.g. UEFA website, Bayer Leverkusen website, above mentioned ESPN, etc.; compare with Adam Hložek. The Finnish wiki is the only European wiki that has the name spelled without diacritics, and for some reason. I understand that Hrádecký simplifies his name in Finland to make it easier for Finns to understand, so it may be a commonname on fiwiki, but certainly not elsewhere. FromCzech (talk) 09:04, 27 January 2023 (UTC)
- @FromCzech: as written in the opening post, the Finnish-language Wikipedia uses the name on his Finnish passport that actually has one diacritic in it, i.e. the ý in his surname. "
used by many Finnish [--] sources
" -- which ones? I searched through many Google hits, e.g. these and the news websites' Google searches linked in the opening post but couldn't find any that use the article's current name "Lukáš Hrádecký"; the only name with diacritics that Finnish websites use is Lukas Hradecký, which is also the name used on fi-wiki. 87.95.204.105 (talk) 00:57, 28 January 2023 (UTC)- I saw his name in References No. 3, 10, 36 and 37, but all these links are broken so I take it back. It doesn't change that it is the common name in English-language sources. FromCzech (talk) 05:52, 28 January 2023 (UTC)
- UEFA.com is not a site “where diacritics are not used as a standard”. See this Slovakia squad, for example. It even uses diacritics in the name of USA international Christian Pulišić, which neither the player himself nor hardly any other English-language source does. That it spells Lukas Hradecky without them is noteworthy. 98.97.8.34 (talk) 03:03, 2 February 2023 (UTC)

Renamed on Lukáš Hradecký (Lukas Hradecky as notice). The variant without diacritics is used where the systems allow only "basic Latin" (user login, domain name, ...).
Language | English |
---|---|
hrad (Czech&Slovak) | castle |
hrádek (Czech, diminutive) | small(er) castle |
hrádok (Slovak) | a history type of the (small(er) castle |
hradík, hradíček (Slovak, diminutive) | small(er) castle |
The name gives the impression that it is Czech (because the suffix -ecký), but it is written in Slovak. In history, however, it may or may not have been Czech. Note, keep in mind that there was also a Czech-Slovak Republic.
In Slovak TOP journalistic media "sme.sk", TA3 and RTVS, i see the Hradecký. He have the brothers as "Hradecký" (cswiki persone Infobox).
Why it's so popular him name as Lukas now, and not Lukáš alias Lukash, so You look the Finnish (cswiki):
- English translate: But for many Finns, it is an insurmountable problem to distinguish between "C", "Č", "S", "Š", "Z" and "Ž" or even between "B" and "P" or "F" and "V".
- Czech: Pro mnoho Finů je ale nepřekonatelným problémem rozlišit mezi „C“, „Č“, „S“, „Š“, „Z“ a „Ž“ nebo dokonce mezi „B“ a „P“ či „F“ a „V“.
