Vandalism

[edit]

There has been some vandalism of this page and I have deleted it.

Hi, I just put in Phil Cunningham and Pat McGlynn as notable alumni and was about to put in Johnnie Cunningham all of whom were at Portobello High School and all are noted in wikipedia without any controversy. Is this the vandalism? Tarzanlordofthejungle (talk) 06:07, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is quoted verbatim from the scotsman.com indicating some famous pupils Portobello High

Famous ex-pupils:Gail Porter, presenter; Kenny Anderson, boxer (Commonwealth Gold Medallist); Phil Cunningham, musician; Ewen Bremner, actor; John Robertson, footballer/manager

any objections to including them. Johnnie Cunningham was Phil's brother and went to school with him? Tarzanlordofthejungle (talk) 20:42, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The following reference indicates who they are. http://thescotsman.scotsman.com/education/-Edinburgh-Council.4007518.jp Tarzanlordofthejungle (talk) 21:00, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I knew Gail Porter and went to Portobello High School. Ewen Bremner did go there at the same time that I did, but Gail Porter did not go to Portobello High School. She did live in the catchment area but went to a different high school. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.76.147.165 (talk) 05:49, 2 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why has the addition of noted alumni on this page reverted. The manager of the third club in Scotland and Scottish national footballer, John Robertson should surely be included. Also how can Phil Cunningham not be regarded as notable alumina. I refer to his home page with a list of awards http://www.philcunningham.com/about/cv-awards.htm He is a scottish symphony composer and holds an MBE. If presenting TV programmes make for notability he does this regularly as well. Who is 'vandalising' this article. Tarzanlordofthejungle (talk) 22:31, 22 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Phi Cunningham I put this man back. If the name is removed could the instigator please offer justification Tarzanlordofthejungle (talk) 22:38, 22 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Again I've out Robertson back in as he is clearly an expupil and clearly famous and notable as 16 appearances for the Scottish football team would suggest as well as numerous other plaudits including presenting on tv and manager a major Scottish soccer club Tarzanlordofthejungle (talk) 11:43, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've added Ken Buchanan to the alumini on the grounds he is often quoted as the greatest ever scottish boxer http://sport.scotsman.com/boxing/Historic-city-boxing-ring-set.2628663.jp Tarzanlordofthejungle (talk) 13:13, 29 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

When was Porty the largest School in EUROPE ???...I have a Guineess BOR from 1975 and it's listed there as the largest school in SCOTLAND. DH —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.151.56.212 (talk) 13:18, 26 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Guinness BoR, 1974, says Portobello Senior Secondary School is largest in Scotland with 2,045, as at April 1972.
Largest schools in England and Northern Ireland were both larger. 2A02:C7C:9945:2B00:C17D:9ABE:3EA5:B182 (talk) 11:54, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Found a reference for biggest school. It's noted in the Guinness book of records: http://www.encyclo.co.uk/define/Portobello%20High%20School Tarzanlordofthejungle (talk) 22:37, 3 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't any records. It was common knowledge the year I was there. It needed an annex to take in an exceptionally large intake of new pupils (who all went to the old school annex), For at least year it was apparently the biggest school in Europe in terms of numbers but of course they were spread across two very separate buildings. It might have been about 1970/71. - not good with dates)Tarzanlordofthejungle (talk) 16:56, 29 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

re-added three alumin - Robertson Cunningham and Buchanan - all have wiki articles in their own right and this is supported by references from the Scotsman newspaper which states A) They're famous, B) they went to Portobello. Some of the other alumin are in there too but I'll leave that to someone else. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tarzanlordofthejungle (talkcontribs) 22:18, 24 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This wryly comic entry may be vandalism. The referenced article does not indicate that he attended PHS or much in the way of him being notable. What is his claim to fame?Sebmelmoth (talk) 11:38, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
