Need for cleanup and General revision of Geophysics in WP
[edit]The article needs to be rewritten to be more consistent after its production as an assembly of individual articles. E.g. a thumper truck is a piece of apparatus but Vibroseis is a method. There seem to be unnecessary repetitions of "refraction" and "reflection". "Seismic source", here implicitly related to geophysical prospecting, could even be a good old-fashioned earthquake, there is in WP a noticeable lack of articles about the esoteric art of doodlebugging, for example one general heading (I can't find it again) redirects to the limited Archaeological geophysics which article goes on at great length about methods and processing which are applicable to all geophysics and not limited to finding ruins.
Why are explosives called "crude" while thumpimg is not? In an article on Seismic Source explosives should have more than a one line dismissal.. in holes/at sea/on the surface/up Poulter's sticks... dynamite/detonating cord/gas guns

By the way, 95% of the time an academic seismologist talks about seismic sources, it refers to earthquakes, so this article is a bit misdirected. Also, synthetic refers to generated by a computer, artificial is physical but manmade. John (talk) 13:59, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the clarifications. The article was originally Air gun (seismic), and has moved on and merged to that title since—focusing on artificial sources. (I was raised in Calgary where usually geophysicists refer to the artificial variety). You could add a section on natural sources, and elaborate more if you wish. (And yes, the clean-up is somewhere on my to-do list.) I suppose notable differences between natural vs artificial, besides the obvious, are the shape of the source wavelets, and their distribution (i.e., point versus distributed). +mt 15:28, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
Electromagnetic Pulse Energy Source (Non-Explosive)
[edit]The below text has been removed from the article because of clarity, grammar, and sourcing issues. "EMP sources based on the electrodynamic and electromagnetic principles. A Charge in the cylinder lifts the plate in EMP and released as soon as the it discharges and a pulse is generated of high energy . Look at the amplitude spectrum of the EMP source, the frequency content for dynamite is taken upto 125 Hz, but amplitude dies after 70 Hz. But the amplitude spectrum you can very well see it goes upto 90 hz. So its quite comparable.

The photo titled thumper trucks is actually of a fleet of Vibroseis "buggies". Thumper trucks almost always act alone. Vibroseis units almost always work in "fleets", often 3 or 4 units together, sometimes as many as 10.N5jjr (talk) 15:40, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
Paragraph that seems to have suffered some editing hiccups

That doesn't appear to have been explained] what we call AWD "Accelerated Weight Drop" seismic energy source, where a high pressure gas (min 6.9 MPa (1,000 psi)) is used to accelerate a heavy weight Hammer (5,000 kg) to hit a base plate coupled from a distance of 2 to 3 m, [ "heavy weight Hammer"? "base plate coupled from a distance"?] which is coupled to the ground to generate an acoustic pulse. Information in wrong place
[edit]The below paragraph is relevant, but does not belong at the tail end of the 'Thumper' section, as it applies to all sources and techniques. I do not know if it belongs on this page, or if there is a seismic processing or signal processing page that already covers it.
It has been estimated that approximately 1% of the chemical energy of a small charge of dynamite is converted into useful P wave energy of the seismic signal[citation needed]. It is unknown how inefficient mechanical impulsive sources are in converting primary energy into useful seismic energy. To overcome these inefficiencies and obtain a higher amplitude of the seismic wavelet or increase the signal to noise ratio, it is usual to either 1) Increase the primary energy of the source (increase the dynamite from 1 to 10 kg, drop a weight from 2 meters instead of 1 meter), and/or 2) synchronize two or more sources to fire simultaneously, and/or 3) stack records sequentially Each of these methods has trade-offs.
New source
[edit]I'm having a hard time understanding an edit that was made by a newer editor in which no modification to the text was made. The editor placed a source at the end of six paragraphs and I'm having a hard time believing that the existing text just happens to perfectly align with what's written in that book.
