[edit]I've heard only a few of their songs, but the one about the motorcrash seems to fit the "whimsical, heartfelt" description in the article. Anyway, could this assertion be shored up with some brief examples, and maybe some counterexamples? Koyaanis Qatsi 03:13 16 Jun 2003 (UTC)
- Whimsical describes most of Icelandic rock, and any good music is heartfelt. I left both of those in, though, because they are at least somewhat objective. I removed the creative compositions because that is totally subjective, and should be replaced with something more specific about how their music and/or lyrics was innovative Tuf-Kat
- I've heard that their name is a reference to LSD. Anyone know if this is true? (cultural context: in the US, LSD is illegally sold by placing a drop of the drug in liquid form on a sugar cube; hence, sugar cubes, along with tabs (LSD on paper) and drops (LSD in liquid form), is one of the methods of distribution). About your doubt, I’ve heard that the Sugarcubes got their name when Einar Örn said, the new band had to have the most ridiculous or strange name, and that’s how they named it Sykurmolarnir (Icelandic for Sugarcubes) and they even appeared a couple of times with their Icelandic name, until it was ultimately translated in order to pursue for international recognition. I will rewrite this article latter. Luis María Benítez 22:34, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- "Icelandic for Sugarcubes"? I love Wikipedia. Where else would I see that? But I don't see the city they were formed in... Trekphiler 06:20, 23 December 2005 (UTC)
- I'd guess Reykjavik, since the Smoky Bay is where most of its main members seem to have been bord or working. Btw, I don't really think Iceland has any "cities". 81.232.72.53 11:35, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
- Agreed (on both counts), but I was trying to be polite, & trying not to introduce myths & mistakes. Trekphiler 11:54, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Getting back together, beyond a "one off" show?
[edit]According to a BBC article today, they're getting back together this year (2007). Can anyone confirm this?
"Other bands who have buried their various hatchets to return in 2007 include The Smashing Pumpkins, the Sugarcubes, Dinosaur Jr and My Bloody Valentine." —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.193.58.101 (talk) 15:13, 26 January 2007 (UTC).
Critical response (pro critics and fans) is overly simplified in this article
[edit]I included Robert Christgau's reviews as a counterpoint to the narrative presented, which makes it sound like there was total consensus about the quality of the three records. I'd also like to mention that just because something doesn't do well in America doesn't mean it's not good music. There is often a big taste divide, looking at what 80s music charted well, between the US and UK — let alone Iceland vs. the USA. My opinion, as someone who spent a lot of time listening to their music, is that Life's Too Good is much more accessible than Here Today but I'd rather listen to Here Today now. It took more time to appreciate and worked well as car music. I did not care at all for Stick Around. It felt Americanized and superficial. Every song is comparatively dull when compared with their earlier work. It's not a surprise to me though, that American critics tended to rate it more highly than something more quirky. I think The Sugarcubes lost their soul by switching to an American producer and studio. Critical response to albums is also sometimes heavily dictated by the times. The Cure's Pornography was massively derided by basically ever pro critic, except maybe one. Now, it's considered to be a masterpiece by many. Here Today isn't as good as that record but it's better than Stick Around for sure.
