Defunct colleges section

[edit]

I'm not sure whether the 'Defunct colleges' section is really needed or appropriate here. Colleges rarely close down or become defunct in the strictest sense, mostly they merge with other institutions, relocate campuses or rename themselves. Also, there are many university colleges which have been renamed pr merged into other over the years. This could mean the Defunct colleges section could become rather large and confusing. You have a point. I really wanted a section in which I could include an article I'd created about a college which is now defunct, but it could cause problems if people want to add every college that strictly no longer exists. I can think of at least half a dozen that would qualify and there are probably scores of others. I won't object if you want to remove it. TheRetroGuy (talk) 18:05, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I will remove it then. Perhaps instead you could create a Defunct colleges in England template, or a Defunct universities and colleges in the West Midlands template? Bleaney (talk) 18:12, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Blimey, that was quick. Seems a good idea to create a defunct college/university template. I might have a go sometime this week. I know there are lots of defunct colleges and universities around. Some have been subsumed into others, like Sutton College and Matthew Boulton which begame Birmingham Metropolitan College, but others have just closed. I think that may have been the case with Hereford College of Education, though I'm not 100 percent sure. TheRetroGuy (talk) 18:19, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
ok, {{Defunct universities and colleges in the United Kingdom}} template now created and added to relevant articles. I took these from the Defunct institutions section of List of universities in the United Kingdom. The list contains one or two which are redirects so this will need tidying up.
