Your BCM edit

[edit]

Thanks for your attention, but the spacing before that colon was deliberate, following AACR (Anglo-American cataloguing rules – now RDA). The most likely audience for this page would be other professional librarians and your edit makes me look just slightly illiterate in cataloguing terms.

Please revert.

Many thanks. Hostkvall (talk) 10:05, 1 January 2024 (UTC)

@Hostkvall:  Done, I am mildly surprised to learn that there is a convention anywhere in the English language for putting a space before a colon. BD2412 T 13:19, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
Many thanks. That's the only place that I know of, but it goes back to AACR 1967 and possibly earlier. Specific to publication data and I think specified in ISBD (International Standard for Bibliographic Description).
Have a happy editing year. My contributions are minimal by any comparison. Hostkvall (talk) 14:27, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
Thinking back to earlier days of computers I guess it was a typographic device that unambiguously separates place of publication from publisher just in case either of those was to include a colon conventionally spaced. Hostkvall (talk) 14:31, 1 January 2024 (UTC)

Not quite done, but what do you think? — Qwerfjkltalk 17:01, 1 January 2024 (UTC)

I would prefer an option for an edit summary. Also, it's very hard to tell, without context, whether the proposed redirect is actually an ambiguous term. For example, the tool proposed to redirect Vanaken to Hans Vanaken, but there is a more famous painter named "Van Aken" who was sometimes called "Vanaken". BD2412 T 17:22, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
What kind of context could I give? I suppose I could get search results for the title. — Qwerfjkltalk 18:46, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
I will probably have ideas after I have gone through more, but I have skipped many because they don't look quite right. BD2412 T 19:09, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
Some examples of ones I have skipped:
Douglas MacArthur's → Douglas MacArthur
Goat Carroll → Alonzo Carroll
INC (I) → Indian National Congress
Incorporated separately → City of federal subject significance
Micheľ → Ľuboš Micheľ
Provost of Beverley → Provost of Beverley Minster
Sussex Borough → Sussex, New Jersey
Wrexham Olympic → Wrexham A.F.C.
Zimbabwe women's national team → Zimbabwe women's national football team
Another observation. It's offering to make quite a few cross-namespace redirects from article space to project space. BD2412 T 18:07, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
I'll try to fix that, shouldn't be too hard to sort out. — Qwerfjkltalk 18:47, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
Also, it just suggested redirecting NY 21 to New York State Route 21, which is a good choice, but that redirect already exists. BD2412 T 23:27, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
If you try to save it, it will check that it exists and throw an error. It's harder to check before that, but I might give it a shot. — Qwerfjkltalk 08:44, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
Okay, I've added the search results (which I've limited to 5, but could easily be increased) and custom edit summary. — Qwerfjkltalk 14:19, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
Do you think it would be worth allowing you to add rcats? — Qwerfjkltalk 11:23, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
I would absolutely like to be able to add rcats! The other information now coming up, however, is confusing. BD2412 T 13:33, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
That's from the search results. I found that sometimes, e.g. Special:Search/Cedric R Hailey, the titles themselves aren't that helpful, and it's more useful to have the snippet from the article.
I'll see if I can add rcats. Would something like this work (just the bit for adding rcats)? — Qwerfjkltalk 14:07, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
Yes, that looks good. I would advise that the largest Rcats for these (so far) are going to be {{R from alternative title}} and {{R from longer title}}. BD2412 T 14:31, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
Okay, I think I've got the rcats working. — Qwerfjkltalk 18:49, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
@Qwerfjkl: The look is definitely better, but it appears to have stopped actually creating the redirects. Now I click save and it takes me to the next one, but the redirect has not been created. BD2412 T 19:20, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
┌──────────────────────────────┘
Try logging out and in again. I changed how the server handles authentication, so that might cause previous sessions to fail. Also try checking the console, it logs the api response there. — Qwerfjkltalk 19:27, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
@Qwerfjkl: That worked. A minor observation — the first redirect suggested was Hornblower, Simon --> Simon Hornblower, which is correct, but as a sortname redirect requires a sortkey. This is not at all a big deal, as sortname redirects without sort keys end up in the general category, from which someone will eventually add the sort key anyway. BD2412 T 19:36, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
I could add a link to the last redirect created? Not sure it's worth fully implementing an editor. — Qwerfjkltalk 19:41, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
Nah, I wouldn't bother. Editors can look at their own contribs. Maybe put a generic caution template atop the page that editors are responsible for every edit, and should check to make sure that the redirect was properly created. BD2412 T 19:43, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
I'll add that to the base page, it's looking a bit bland right now. — Qwerfjkltalk 20:39, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
I've added it, not sure what else to say. — Qwerfjkltalk 10:48, 5 January 2024 (UTC)
Excellent, I will run through it more intensely this weekend. BD2412 T 16:10, 5 January 2024 (UTC)
Unaffilated → Irreligion in the United States

This is just a typo. It's a good hint for finding and fixing the typo wherever it exists, however. BD2412 T 03:45, 6 January 2024 (UTC)

Is there anything else I should improve? If not, I'll start advertising this to see if I can get anyone to help out. — Qwerfjkltalk 20:53, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
I would suggest advertising it as still in beta and looking for testers. Wikipedia:WikiProject Redirect is definitely the place. I am still seeing mostly suggestions that would not make good redirects, or at least would require additional research to confirm (e.g., 1967 Jönköping → 1967 World Modern Pentathlon Championships; Córdoba RU → Unión Cordobesa de Rugby; 2nd Infantry Regiment → 2nd Infantry Regiment (United States); December 2, 2014 → National Board of Review Awards 2014). There have been some clearly good ones as well, though. BD2412 T 21:20, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
I would in particular be skeptical of any suggestion to point a "Foo" term to a "Foo (disambiguator)" term, since titles with a disambiguator usually have that for a reason that precludes them from using the "Foo" title. I would also be skeptical of pointing a calendar date to an article on an event that occurred on that date, unless it was something of singular worldwide notability (we all know which dates those are). BD2412 T 01:30, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
Not sure I can do much to filter out the latter ones, but it should be possible to filter the former ones. — Qwerfjkltalk 07:08, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
Okay, I've removed 4702 redirects of the form Foo → Foo (bar) — Qwerfjkltalk 15:49, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
@Qwerfjkl: Would you happen to have a list of those 4702 redirects? They are probably actually either candidates for disambiguation, or for redirection to existing disambiguation pages. BD2412 T 16:46, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
Sure, see User:Qwerfjkl/sandbox/55. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:58, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

Hello, BD2412,

You turned this category into a category redirect, which is fine, but it still contains a file and category redirects are supposed to be empty. Unfortunately, I can not remove this category from the file as it has not been added to file manually but through a template. Do you know how to handle situations like this? Thanks for any help you can provide. Liz Read! Talk! 20:59, 2 January 2024 (UTC)

Oh, the same goes for a file in Category:Non-free biographical images published in 1925. Liz Read! Talk! 20:59, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
@Liz: This should be done for both now. It just requires removing the "year=" parameter from the non-free biographical images template. It is correct that images published in these years may no longer be "non-free" (although that is subject to technicalities), but it is still useful to categorize them by publication year until such questions are settled. Request for renaming "Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Harford County, Connecticut"

[edit]

Greetings! Would it be possible for you to rename the category Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Harford County, Connecticut to Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Hartford County, Connecticut?

Harford County is a county located in Maryland, while Hartford County is located in Connecticut. It looks like the creator, BrownHairedGirl probably made a typo when creating the category.

Thanks in advance for your help! Staraction (talk) 04:26, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

Public image of Roberto Clemente

[edit]

Hello there. You gave this suggestion about Clemente's Legacy page, to make it into Public image of Roberto Clemente. Now that I can get behind because I don't see "public image" and "legacy" as the same thing and this is about Clemente's public image. I wanted to ask if I am allowed to redo/rename this page? Omnis Scientia (talk) 09:35, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

  • @Omnis Scientia: I expect that this would be controversial, given that at least one participant in the AfD objected to this proposal. Such a request must therefore go through Wikipedia:Requested moves. Any editor is free to edit the page, but I would counsel proceeding with caution, deliberativeness, and collaboration to this end. BD2412 T 13:18, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
I will leave it for a few weeks, I think. I'm still of the opinion that this page is not helpful and also difficult to improve due to the main page covering this topic already and in detail - athletes' legacies are, in large, their playing career so I see little reason in creating a seperate page for that. Likely, if someone else doesn't improve this page (which basically just a list of quotes/opinions of Clemente's contemporaries), I will renominate it for deletion in the longrun. Character list articles

[edit]

Regarding this, I think the conclusion you came around to yourself, that this needs to be addressed systemically instead of per-show, is correct. That would be a really huge RM on a shaky basis, against a lot of "I don't see how this will really be better" inertia against change simply because it is change (and that is a palpable force around these parts).

What I would recommend, wearing my "how to get major changes done" hat, is to wait for the present brouhaha about episode list titles to resolve out one way or another, just so there are not two contentious proposals open on the same page, and then open a new proposal at WT:NCTV to establish a good and consistent format for character list articles (and account for all the variations in these as to their scopes).  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  10:58, 9 January 2024 (UTC)

Why do you get to say dr Mccollough is a spreader of disinformation?

[edit]

Did you not see the cdc has said you can use ivermectin and hydroxyc for covid now? why dont you actually research stuff , instead of repeating others? 100.4.181.8 (talk) 06:17, 16 January 2024 (UTC)

I presume you refer to Peter A. McCullough. Can you provide diffs showing that I have said that "Mccollough is a spreader of disinformation?" So far as I can find, I only made three edits to the article, one to remove the AfD tag when the article was WP:SNOW kept, one to fix spacing around a reference tag, and one to upgrade a link. The contentions that the subject has disseminated disinformation has been added by other editors, and reflects the sources provided by those editors.
With respect to the contention that CDC "has said you can use ivermectin and hydroxyc", can you provide sources for those contentions? The most recent pronouncement on Ivermectin is from the NIH three weeks ago, which notes several controlled studies showing no statistical difference in outcomes for Ivermectin, and recommends against its use for treatment of COVID-19. Outcomes for hydroxychloroquine appear similar. BD2412 T 14:34, 16 January 2024 (UTC)

Google Cloud SIA

[edit]

Hi,

Do you happen to remember why Google Cloud was was made a WP:SIA? I agree that it isn't a disambiguation page, but, having familiarity with the domain area, it just strikes me as very odd that there's a standalone list of Google Cloud services that have the word 'cloud' in their name.

There's a related discussion at Talk:Google_Cloud_Platform#Merge_proposal. --PaulT2022 (talk) 14:49, 18 January 2024 (UTC)

I merely swapped out the existing disambiguation tag for an SIA tag, per the cited policy. BD2412 T 14:59, 18 January 2024 (UTC)
Sorry, which one? WP:DABCONPROD doesn't say that pages listing multiple product lines are necessarily WP:SIA. Am I missing something?
There's an editor making a formally valid argument on the talk page I linked above that WP:SIA list would differ from a full list of all product lines, as SIA requires list entries to share the same name. (Many notable Google Cloud products don't, i.e. BigQuery.)
The problem is, there are now two different lists of Google Cloud Platform products and the only thing that suggests they differ in scope is the SIA template at the bottom of Google Cloud. There's nothing else to suggest they're different to a reader. I don't think it's a good thing and I'm not sure how to move forward because of apparent consensus to keep Google Cloud a SIA list. --PaulT2022 (talk) 15:46, 18 January 2024 (UTC)
WP:DABCONPROD says: "The fact that different models in the same series of product by the same manufacturer may have the same name, or the same combination of name and number, does not make them ambiguous. The relationship between these design models can and should be discussed on a page describing products created by or licensed by the same manufacturer". Whether or not there should be an article discussing a wider range of products, the issue is that this is not a disambiguation page, because the terms on the page are not unrelated. Hello Grandmaster Editor First-Class bd2412!

I was wondering about an edit you made back in 15:39, 26 June 2013‎. You added to the Cannabis wikiquote page the lyrics "I smoke a bowl when I'm stressed And then I picture my girl undressed" by Da Molester. Source? I tried finding Da Molesters wikipage but nothing came up. If you could help that would be greatly appreciated. Younotakeip (talk) 18:44, 22 January 2024 (UTC)

I can't help you there. I merely merged two pages together, and did not vet the quotes merged in. This one appears to have been added by an IP in 2010. I will remove it now. BD2412 T 18:49, 22 January 2024 (UTC)

You need to go back and recheck all the links you edited, the edit broke all but one and made them a red link. Esw01407 (talk) 16:31, 26 January 2024 (UTC)

Concerning accepted articles

[edit]

Hello. You reviwed the articles of The Equalizer (2021 TV series, season 1), The Equalizer (2021 TV series, season 2), The Equalizer (2021 TV series, season 3) and The Equalizer (2021 TV series, season 4). I had previously denied them as I beleived it was an unessesary split of List of The Equalizer (2021 TV series) episodes and a Coatrack article as can be seen on User_talk:86.1.199.26 and the page's revision history. However, on all four occasions the user reverted my decline so the reason I gave was not actually visible, then submitted it again. I told the user not to do this, and now I have seen that they have now been blocked in connection to this.

If you are aware of this and yet still decided to accept it, then there is no actual problem. I just wanted to make sure you were aware of this due to the stealthy manner the user tried to undermine my reviews. I still feel as as if my reason for denying it before is at least somewhat valid as List of The Equalizer (2021 TV series) episodes is already a very well existing article, though I would like to hear your input first.

Thanks, TheBritinator (talk) 15:31, 1 February 2024 (UTC)

  • @TheBritinator: I was not aware of the previous declines, and would not have entertained the request had I known about them. On their face, we frequently have articles on individual TV seasons, and these appeared to be reasonably robust. I would prefer not to bother to send them back to draft. If someone wants to nominate them for deletion, I would have no qualms with that. BD2412 T 16:54, 1 February 2024 (UTC)
I'm not willing to kick up a fuss about it or anything. Thanks for the response, It's been very helpful. TheBritinator (talk) 17:21, 1 February 2024 (UTC)

The redirect Quay, Elizabeth has been listed at redirects for discussion to determine whether its use and function meets the redirect guidelines. Anyone, including you, is welcome to comment on this redirect at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2024 February 3 § Quay, Elizabeth until a consensus is reached. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 16:28, 3 February 2024 (UTC)

I was wondering if there were similar cases (not necessarily created by yourself!) so I listed likely candidates in User:Certes/Reports/R_from_sort_name. Many of the entries are legitimate but I hope the report may still be useful. If there are many false positives of one type, the query could be refined to exclude them. Certes (talk) 23:08, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
I have a fairly lengthy list of cautions to which I have just added "Quay" - now it includes: Air, Avenue, Bay, Bridge, Building, College, County, Creek, Division, Falls, Farm, Field, Fields, Formation, Glacier, Highway, Hill, Hills, Hollow, Hotel, House, Inlet, Island, Islands, Isle, Isles, Library, Medal, Mount, Mountain, Mountains, Museum, Park, Parrish, Plaza, Preserve, Quay, Range, Reserve, River, Rivers, Road, Sea, Strait, Street, Town, Township, Trail, University, Valley, Village, and Way.
Some of these are, of course, also potentially legitimate surnames. BD2412 T 23:16, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
Thanks. Yes, it's often far from obvious from the title whether the subject is a person or a place, or indeed a dab like George Street listing both. Certes (talk) 23:21, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
A dab listing both I would also consider appropriate for a sortname redirect. There are occasionally some weird names out there. BD2412 T 23:38, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
Yes, I agree. I've diverted a few such as Cross, George to the relevant dab. Certes (talk) 23:50, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for working through the list. I've looked at D–Z identifying people, characters and pseudonyms. There are several others about companies named the founder who is mentioned but has no article, and fictional works with a title character who again is mentioned but has no article. I've not marked those up but those redirects may be worth keeping too. Certes (talk) 21:48, 5 February 2024 (UTC)
Given that we have generally not had objections to sortname redirects to articles specifically on fictional characters, I think it makes sense to keep them for works where the name of the work is just the name of the character. BD2412 T 22:08, 5 February 2024 (UTC)

Pending court case example

[edit]

Hi BD. Would you happen to know off the top of your head of an example article that is about a court case that had a (notable) interlocutory appeal and was remanded and is pending trial? Or anything like that? I'm trying to figure out what the infobox should look like, whether to list all the involved trial and appeal courts, case numbers, decision dates (and if so how to format it), or just the state Supreme Court case, or what, but I can't find a model to look at. Thanks! Levivich (talk) 19:33, 9 February 2024 (UTC)

I don't, although Klaassen v. Indiana University has not been updated since it was in that posture. That article has no infobox, though. BD2412 T 20:17, 9 February 2024 (UTC)
Thanks! I guess I'll just make it up :-) Levivich (talk) 20:51, 9 February 2024 (UTC)

Your Contributions to Emmanuel Lemelson Page

[edit]

Hi User:BD2412, you've made some insightful posts on the Emmanuel Lemelson talk page. Particularly in regard to the use and interpretation of sources. Link 1 Link 2.

I've started, at the encouragement of an other editor, a new section for proposed edits here.

I hope you will continue to engage with the page as it would benefit greatly from more editors being involved, especially since the page deals with an unprecedented and complex civil litigation matter. Link

I am appalled to see an admin using TMZ as a source on a biography of a living person. You should know better. This is exactly why the article is protected. Please remove that section until better sources are available. Counterfeit Purses (talk) 23:51, 21 February 2024 (UTC)

Per WP:TMZ, there is no consensus that TMZ is unreliable as a source. However, the lack of a green light for the source is the reason I used two sources, the other being Complex.com, for which I am aware of no WP:RSP listing or discussion questioning its reliability. BD2412 T 23:56, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
While there probably haven't been discussions about Complex or Indy100, I think you will admit that neither is recognized as the type of high quality sources we need for a report like this. Both of those sources make it clear that they are relying on the TMZ report. If the article wasn't fully protected, I would feel quite comfortable reverting you myself on BLP grounds. Since I can't, I will start a discussion on the BLP noticeboard. Counterfeit Purses (talk) 00:08, 22 February 2024 (UTC)

Re: email from User:SilentNotmad

[edit]

I received the following email via wiki-mail from User:SilentNotmad:

Hello, would you be interested in creating a page for a contemporary artist/sculptor Rudolf Burda?

Here is some coverage: Notable Czech contemporary artist/sculptor; https://www.rudolfburda.com/ https://www.rudolfburda.com/about/, https://kodlcontemporary.com/Rudolf-Burda, https://taksu.com/rudolf-burda/

Thank you.

In response, I would say that I have too much on my plate at the moment to look at a random Czech sculptor. I see that this editor has asked a half dozen other editors to create the page (and probably more via email), but has not attempted to start a draft themselves, or made any kind of proposal at Wikipedia:WikiProject Sculpture or Wikipedia:WikiProject Czech Republic. Upcoming G13s

[edit]

Hello, again, BD2412,

I hope all's well with you. Looking at today's SDZeroBot's G13 soon report for next Thursday, I see that there are about 100 drafts that you made minor edits to around the 22:00 UTC hour that are expiring next week. There might be no problem with these edits and drafts but it's unusual to have an huge influx of expiring drafts over a short period of time so I thought I'd ask about them and whether you wanted to leave them be or postpone their deletion. We seem to have this issue with AWB edits in Draft space. Thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 03:17, 23 February 2024 (UTC)

These are villages in Uzbekistan, for which someone started drafts with some awkward wording that I fixed. If no one cares to work on them, then it's time to let them go. BD2412 T 03:44, 23 February 2024 (UTC)

Non-constructive IP at Wilhelmina Wright

[edit]

Just a casual heads up. There is an IP that has been selectively removing references and information at Wilhelmina Wright. Not in such a way to be openly vandalistic, but clearly not constructive. When you get a chance, if you could take a look. I did speak to the IP, but apparently to no avail. Safiel (talk) 23:16, 23 February 2024 (UTC)

  • An additional note. I have determined this user's IP originates from the Administrative Office of the United States Courts, and I have further warned the user about conflict of interest polices. Safiel (talk) 23:37, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
    • I have added the page to my watchlist, but it seems handled. I would also caution that after this weekend I may be away for an indeterminate period of time on business. BD2412 T 23:48, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
