Santozeum is a new museum and exhibit space geared toward the intersection of antiquity and contemporary practice. Housed with an expansive refurbished traditional home on the island of Santorini, the current exhibit frames 3-D reproductions of the ancient Wall Paintings of Thera within the ambient surroundings of a contemporary soundtrack that changes as visitors progress toward the heart of the house and its extremities. The sounds, collected on the island, are manipulated to resemble the unusual arrival of visitors by boat, and up the cliff on donkeys, as well as the encounter of an unexpected palimpsest of sounds that are associated with the island's unusual weather patterns. During the Summer 2011 season, the museum is also showcasing new video works by contemporary Greek video artists. The museum's mission statement is to bring live arts into contact with ancient artifacts, as well as connect contemporary art practitioners from all genres with concepts of antiquity redefined for the modern context.
