Rufus Philpot(born February 28th,1968) is an Electric and acoustic bass player, from London, England. He is currently playing with-and leading- the U.S. version of acid jazz group Down to the Bone. He is also bassist for CPT. Kirk, the group Tizer, and Canadian jazz guitarist Brian Hughes' group.He is known for a high level of dexterity in a wide variety of muscal styles, and since moving to the United States has toured and recorded with many notable musicians.
Rufus Philpot was born in London ,England, and studied music both at Wells Cathedral School and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London.
In 2000 he moved to New York City, and began working with such notable musicians as Joel Rosenblatt, Kim Plainfield, Jeff Golub, Vinny Valentino, Bill Evans and Randy Brecker. He also was invited to join the faculty of the world renowned Bass Collective in New York City. In 2002 he formed the trio JVR with Joel Rosenblatt and in 2004moved to Los Angeles, where he began working with Virgil Donati, Tony MacAlpine, Mitch Forman and Scott Henderson. In 2004 he recorded two tracks for Planet X cd "Quantum" also touring with this band and the Virgil Donati Group. He was the subject of a two page feature in the Sept. 2007 Bass Player magazine, and in 2010 , a four page article in Drumscene magazine. He is an endorsing Artist with Ibanez basses, Gallien Kreuger amplification and La Bella strings... In 2006 Rufus Philpot travelled to Sweden with Virgil Donati to headline the Swedish Bass n Drum day festival. He also toured Poland,Italy, and Australia twice with Donati's groups.He also recorded two track on Planet X cd "Quantum" H also has toured the United States extensively with Down to the Bone and Tizer. He also co leads a Quartet with guitarist Scott Henderson & Mitch Forman. He is a regular Masterclass clinician at Los Angeles Music Academy & the Musician's Institute, Hollywood. In 2009 he was invited to perform at bass Player Magazine's "Bass Player Live" Special Event. At this festival he shared the stage with Tower of Power, Jimmy Earl, Tal Wilkenfeld and Stu Hamm. 2010 saw Rufus performing in Chile with Brian Hughes group,headlining the Montreal Drum Festival with CPT. Kirk-also featuring Kirk Covington and releasing their debut c.d. :"Starship Cadillac."
He continues, in 2011 to work with Mitch Forman,Scott Henderson,Kirk Covington, Mike Miller, Jeff Kollman, Karen Briggs, Chieli Minucci, amongst others.
