ChiZine Publications (CZP) is an independent publisher of "weird, surreal, subtle, and disturbing dark literary fiction."[1] It was founded in 2008 by Brett Alexander Savory and Sandra Kasturi, co-editors of the online magazine ChiZine: Treatments of Light and Shade in Words as an off-shoot of the magazine. It publishes its titles in signed limited edition hardcovers, trade paperbacks, and as eBooks in PDF, MOBI, and EPUB formats; all versions are released simultaneously.
CZP is distributed in the US and UK by Diamond Book Distributors [2][3] and by the Manda group within Canada.[4]
Critical Response
[edit]Rose Fox in her Genreville Blog for Publishers Weekly described CZP as "hit(ting) the literary-and-deeply-creepy mark that I love so much"[5] while McNallyRobison said the physical quality of its books "looks and feels like a book that should have been published by a major house."[6] Eye Weekly commented CZP "exploded this year with high-quality genre titles skewed toward dark horror as well as being a sometime-home for literary maniacs like Pontypool author Tony Burgess"[7] and John O'Neil, editor of Black Gate Magazine, thanked CZP "for turning me into a fanboy again."[8]
Since its founding, CZP's books have made many Awards[9][10] and Year's Best lists[11][12], including those of Brian Keene[13] and Ellen Datlow.[14]
Accomplishments
[edit]Authors of Note
[edit]Robert J. Wiersema decided to publish The World More Full of Weeping, a novella follow-up to his best seller Before I Wake, with CZP because "there was no way that Random was going to publish a novella." [15]
ECW Press granted permission to CZP to produce limited edition hard cover versions of Tony Burgess' Pontypool Changes Everything, the first time the book had appeared in hard cover since its publication.[16]
Cities of Night Photo Contest
[edit]Meredith Keller included the Cities of Night Photo Contest in her 45 Contests, Real World Examples of Contests That Worked & Everything You Need To Know To Make Yours A Success ebook, saying "They really did a great job of developing a contest that would resonate with and engage their audience."[17]
The contest also received coverage in Fangoria.[18]
People Live Still in Cashtown Corners Trailer
[edit]In 2010, ChiZine Publications released People Live Still in Cashtown Corners by Tony Burgess, author of Pontypool Changes Everything and writer of the acclaimed adaptation Pontypool. Burgess collaborated with award-winning director Bruce McDonald to release a book trailer for Cashtown Corners. Few publishers had previously involved major filmmakers in their projects. The National Post called the trailer "dramatic stuff . . . an interesting blueprint for publishers to get filmmakers involved in their titles."[19] The trailer also received coverage by industry periodicals such as Rue Morgue[20] and Quill & Quire.[21] The trailer can be viewed at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwSH8AJtIiI
