Institute for Functional Medicine (also known as IFM) is a Washington based non-profit organization, educational institution and the official certifying body for the field of functional medicine. IFM offers trainings, certifications and learning programs at various levels including online programs.[5][6][7][8] The institute supports and educates on the use of functional medicine in clinical practice, develops new research models for assessing whole system practices and establishes practice based research networks to validate successful applications of functional medicine.[9][10][8][11]
Functional Medicine
[edit]Functional Medicine approaches a disease, using a systems-oriented approach and a therapeutic method as a more patient-centered way. According to IFM, "Functional Medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms." Functional Medicine practitioners take the approach of talking to the patients about their histories and look at the interactions among "genetic, environmental, and lifestyle" factors to acquire the patient's health background.[12]
Educational programs
[edit]The educational programs of the institute include:[13]
- Conferences and trainings.[13]
- Online learning.[13]
- Certifications.[8][14]
- Continuing Medical Education (CME) & Continuing education units (CEU).[13]
Partnerships
[edit]The institute has partnered with multiple organizations and started educational programs to help expand into the field. The CEO of the Cleveland Clinic, Toby Cosgrove, was cited as confirming that Mark Hyman would start serving as the director of the newly launched Center for Function Medicine.[14] The Center is to cover a range of components such as expert health coaches, nutritionists with the staff including physicians, registered nurses, registered dietitians and registered dietitian nutritionists.[14]
The institute has also partnered with the University of Miami Medical School to feature events that connect health care practitioners in Miami among other collaborations.[15] The collaborations also include a formal agreement with the Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH) starting an opportunity for practitioners for advanced credits. Those who are in good standing with IFM, and have met MUIH admissions qualifications would be able to earn up to nine credits of advanced standing in the program under this collaboration.[16]
History
[edit]The Institute for Functional Medicine was founded by Jeffrey Bland and Susan Bland in 1991 as a division of HealthComm, however, It later broke off to become a separate entity and is now run by a board of advisors.[5][17][18]
The institute regularly trains and certifies experts in functional medicine to enhance their capabilities in the field. IFM's certified doctors and personnel have also received media coverage and notability at various occasions and sources[8][10][19][20][21][22] in addition to IFM being quoted as a part of conferences and news reports.[23][24][25][26]
The Institute for Functional Medicine is chaired by Mark Hyman and consists of roughly 40 faculty members.[8][27][20][14] The institute currently offers education and certifications and is based in Washington and New Mexico,[8][14] however, the Mark also aims "to incorporate functional medicine and functional nutrition in undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education.”[8] According to Dentistry IQ, the development of Functional Dentistry divulged into a new medicine paradigm to root out various diseases.[28]
