Metro Charleroi

[edit]

Hi,

Thank you for adding so much information about Charleroi's premetro system to the English wiki, and that you incorporate the pictures I made of premetro station. I really need to update the information on the Dutch wiki a lot.

In the page Pétria I notice that you put "Anderlues" as next station, but there is no "Anderlues" station or stop - that stop is Coron du Berger. The last stop on the line is called Monument, in - indeed - Anderlues.

Do you live in Brussels? Will you join the grand opening of the 3 new sections in - presumably - December this year?

Tijmen / IIVQ (talk) 21:06, 2 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tijmen,

Thanks for your kind words. I've now rewritten the main Charleroi Pre-metro page, trying to summarize the various sources of (reliable) information and sharing my own experiences with the Charleroi metro, while respecting the work of original authors by keeping the general article structure and key sentences.

I plan to add more details provided I find the time to collect and verify more information. Also, as the page will need updates as new sections are opened, I'm willing to write them provided no one else does it.

Your remark about the use of "Anderlues" as a station is absolutely correct. Anderlues is indeed not a station, and I should update the line definitions to include all the tram stops in Anderlues. However, this would require the creation of an article (be it a basic one) for each stop to stay coherent and allow the reader to click on every station to reach the related article. As I had no time to do it now, I chose to use "Anderlues" as a generic name for all the stops in Anderlues. On a related note, this is the way signs in Charleroi metro refer to the "Monument" terminus : they always show "Anderlues" rather than "Monument". Of course, you are right when one considers the big picture and I'm willing to update the line definitions and create the missing pages in the near future.

As for me living in Brussels, well, I officially live in Charleroi, but I work in the Brussels area, and live part time in Charleroi and (temporarily) part time in Brussels. I won't be at the opening in December as I won't be in Charleroi at that time.

Kind regards.

Naming

[edit]

How do you spell it? Is it "Pre-metro", "Pre-Metro", "pre-metro" or "premetro"? I don't care, but please choose one and stick with it. There are articles, templates, categories and references with different spellings. I don't see the use of Pre-metro as a proper name in any references except what you have created here. The word premetro is sometimes used to decribe what type of system it is. Perhaps "Charleroi light rail" would have been a better translation, but if as you say "Charleroi metro" (or Metro) is what it is commonly referred to, as you have used in the Template:Charleroi Metro navbox, you could have stuck with that. Well - you can see the inconsistencies. I think a little renaming and cleanup is needed - but I will help. Thanks for the work you have done on this. Sw2nd (talk) 23:22, 18 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that Pre-metro is a poor name. I don't like it but I use it as it was the original article title (that I didn't create myself). It's true that I haven't been extremely strict as to the use of a consistent name in all pages related to the Charleroi metro system. In my opinion, the best name should be metro (main article title should be Charleroi Metro if we want to remain consistent with e.g. the "Brussels Metro" article). Locals definitely refer to the system as "Métro" (full name: "Métro de Charleroi") in French.

Your help in establishing a coherent naming convention would be appreciated.

Kind regards

BrusselsSouth (talk) 08:20, 19 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Good! I will have a look and see if I can move everything to "Charleroi Metro". Then I will need your help with the cleanup to get rid of any unwanted article and template names. Sw2nd (talk) 17:06, 19 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Moves have been done and an Infobox public transit has been added to the main article. Please check that everything is OK. Cleanup to come soon.Sw2nd (talk) 03:53, 28 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Charleroi Metro

[edit]

Note that the routes on the TEC website are shown as M1, M2 and M4 to distinguish from bus routes using those numbers. Sw2nd (talk) 00:47, 1 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

and you have the lines running left and right to the same place on your new s-line templates. Where to they go? Sw2nd (talk) 00:53, 1 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yesterday I attended a "behind the scenes" visit of the Metro that included a private ride until Soleilmont. Yes, new line designators have an "M" prefix, however signs in the stations and on most official maps don't have the "M". Destination displays on trams have the "M", though.

Officially (I asked that question to a TEC Charleroi representative specifically), none of the new lines have a terminus in Charleroi since they are all considered as "loop" lines. Line 1 starts at Anderlues (Monument), goes to Charleroi and runs around the central loop counter-clockwise, before going back to Anderlues. Line 2 is the same but it runs around the loop clockwise. Line 4 starts at Soleimont, runs to Charleroi then back to Soleilmont. So, all current lines have the same start and end point, hence the s-line templates. Note that after the opening of line 3 (to Gosselies), line 2 will start and end at Pétria instead of Anderlues (line 3 is already shown on maps and station signs).

Finally, note that I still need to update the main Charleroi Metro article, as well as articles dealing with the "old" lines. I will also create new articles for the new lines (it's only a matter of finding spare time... should be in the coming days).--BrusselsSouth (talk) 05:45, 1 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ah! I see it now. I will try and think of a better way to display it in the succession templates. Sw2nd (talk) 05:50, 1 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I'm trying to quickly update the navbox right now, which is a race against time since I have to go to work ;-) --BrusselsSouth (talk) 05:52, 1 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
TEC timetables show Charleroi-Sud as the inbound destination and as the start point for outbound trains. I'm going to try Line 4. Sw2nd (talk) 17:55, 1 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, but if you take a closer look at the timetables, you'll notice that the departure time from Sud is the same as the arrival time at Sud (+ 1 minute), meaning that there's no official break of service at Sud. Passengers needing to travel past Sud just stay on board and the "timetable break" is absolutely transparent for them (save for a possible change of driver). As I mentioned, representatives from TEC Charleroi specifically said that Sud is *not* the terminus of the line.--BrusselsSouth (talk) 08:15, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Have you looked at Line 4 change in the s-line box? That is; left box from Soleilmont to Waterloo goes "toward Sud", then right box around the loop (with "One-way operation" always showing as "Preceding") and continuing in the right box all "toward Soleilmont". Sud never shows as a Terminus. Passengers leaving Soleilmont are NOT going toward Soleilmont they are going toward Charleroi, and Sud seems like the best choice because it matches the timetable. Don't you think this gives a better indication of the actual travel direction? Would you prefer "toward Charleroi" rather than specifying Sud? Sw2nd (talk) 17:00, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've just taken a closer look at what you've done for line 4. Certainly, it makes much more sense and is much clearer to understand, especially on the Samaritaine-Soleimont section, where, as you rightly said, it was confusing to see "Soleilmont" as the destination in both directions. Thank you for implementing this solution. Now, would you mind doing the same for lines 1 and 2? The main Charleroi Metro page needs a serious revision, which I will gladly do as soon as I have time. I also plan to create the specific "line" pages (for lines 1, 2, 4, and the future line 3). During the visit a few days ago, I took a couple of photos and I plan to upload some of them.--BrusselsSouth (talk) 19:03, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Good! Yes, I will do some cleanup - when I get the time. Are you going to upload your photos to Commons? Sw2nd (talk) 20:11, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
