Edits I don't understand
CC, in this edit, you've replaced en dashes in empty table cells with hyphens, which is just wrong. You've also squeezed out some blank lines that don't matter, which seems like a backwards cosmetic step. And replaced some piped redirects where the preemptive disambiguation was probably intentional and useful, such as Johanna Larsson (tennis). Dicklyon (talk) 17:08, 27 June 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Dicklyon - I'm not aware that there's any preference for marking empty cells with a dash rather than a hyphen - is this a standard that's documented somewhere? I'm happy to adjust my scripts to standardise on whatever's preferred.
- The blank lines were removed by AWB general fixes - if you feel this is undesirable, please raise it over at AWB.
- There is also a lesser-known Johanna Larsson (swimmer), but back in 2017 it was decided that the tennis player was the primary topic, so not requiring disambiguation. Colonies Chris (talk) 18:55, 27 June 2023 (UTC)
- I don't know where it's documented, but dashes are most common in empty cells; and if it's not documented, your script shouldn't go one way of the other. Note that that part of your change got reverted immediately (not by me). I'll bring it up at the blank lines removal at the AWB talk page.
- My point on the disambiguator is that since primarytopic can change, the link piped through a disambiguated redirect serves a genuine purpose; and furthermore that replacing it with a direct link is purely cosmetic, so it's preferred to leave such things alone. When piping though a redirect that's a misspelling or miscapitalization, on the other hand, a more direct link is preferred so it's worth changing. Dicklyon (talk) 17:32, 28 June 2023 (UTC)
- Also, your dash replacement was quite inconsistent, resulting in lines such as "WTA Tour Championships || - || - || bgcolor=CCCCFF|– || –" with two hypens and two dashes, when it was all consistently dashes before. Dicklyon (talk) 17:42, 28 June 2023 (UTC)
- The reason I have a regex in my scripts to standardise the content of empty cells is precisely because it's not consistent currently. There are many articles that have a mixture of both. As I said, I'm happy to change my script to standardise on a dash rather than a hyphen if you can show me where that's prescribed or recommended. You've described the use of a dash as 'just wrong' - is that your personal preference, or is there some guidance on the subject? Colonies Chris (talk) 18:22, 28 June 2023 (UTC)
- See Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style#Dashes in empty table cells and jump in if you like. As for hyphens alone, I don't know if it's written down, but it's my impression that a spaced or standalone hyphen has no legit role, esp. within WP style. In some styles, a spaced hyphen stands in for a dash. Dicklyon (talk) 05:19, 29 June 2023 (UTC)
- Also note that your regex patterns would need some help to avoid moving from consistent to inconsistent. Dicklyon (talk) 05:20, 29 June 2023 (UTC)

Flagu query
I'm now noticing something else and before I start correcting things I want to make sure I understand the edit. You have changed tables that list country of a player. It will list many countries using the flag template but you changed the USA players to flagu template... thus no links for the USA. Why is the USA singled out for no links in a table? I can see changing duplicates countries in a single table so that the second usage is flagu... no need for redundancy in a single table. But some aren't redundant. This edit here is a bit perplexing to me. Fyunck(click) (talk) 21:39, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
- It's not just the USA, but most major countries (UK, Australia, France, China etc.), in line with the general principle of not linking common terms with which most readers will be familiar (see WP:OVERLINK). Colonies Chris (talk) 22:31, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
- I can see that in an infobox where you have a single country because you were born in London, UK you wouldn't link UK. But a list of 20 countries linked like Canada, Spain, Serbia, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Poland, Holland, Austria, etc...of which the USA is one, it would be odd to only unlink the name USA. Overlinking certainly needs to be curtailed but in a list like that all should be linked or none should be linked. Perhaps maybe you could link the first instance of the country in a chart, but not subsequent instances in that same chart. Fyunck(click) (talk) 22:41, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
