... and also welcome to Classical music! -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:47, 7 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Gerda. I am still a newbie so i will definitely ask for help! I am mainly interested in classical music. I joined because i want to create a new article "List of of burial places of classical music notable figures" ... but i'm trying in sandbox and working with tables is pretty complicated!
Thanks again for being so welcoming :) Gor1995 (talk) 19:05, 7 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Good plan. I worked on lists but found them mostly given, such as List of Bach cantatas. One I did from scratch - but long ago - was Max Reger works. The person I'd ask for help is Aza24 who created the List of sculptures of Ludwig van Beethoven. Enjoy! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:11, 8 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
What a great idea for a list! A few things:
  • the title "List of of burial places of classical music notable figures" is hard to parse. I would just go with "List of burial places for classical musicians". Conductors, composers, instrumentalists are all included under "classical musicians". In addition, you don't want the "notable figures" since Wikipedia lists of people are implied to only include notable figures to begin with
  • Try to avoid Find a Grave as mush as possible; it's not a reliable source for Wikipedia purposes
  • With images in tables I'd avoid the "thumb parameter", just do [[File:NAME|center|200px]] or a similar px size, as long as its consistent
  • Definitely sort by last name, not first name! See {{Sortname}} for a way to do that
Best – Aza24 (talk) 20:12, 10 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much for all the suggestions! Being a new user, it is greatly appreciated :)
I created a draft page Draft:List of burial places of classical musicians so anyone interested can contribute (adding/correcting info or helping with the formatting). I'll keep working on it
Thanks again :) Gor1995 (talk) 16:31, 11 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Translate?

[edit]

Nice to see your name on my watchlist. Please explain your criteria for adding a template that there's more to be translated in the native language. I never use top templates because I believe they distract from the content, but understand some. This one makes sense in cases I often observe: a stub of two sentences just to avoid a red link. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:37, 8 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I reverted a few, but have no time for more. Schütz from Norwegian, but Diabelli from German even looks a bit absurd, and missing references seems by far the bigger problem. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:45, 8 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have looked at Tullio Serafin, called to translate from Greek, where he has just a stub! I have no time revert to revert that nonsense, please do it yourself. Wikipedia has problems, and missing translation is a minor one. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:33, 8 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Having looked at your sandbox, it seems like you personally want to expand some. That's fine, but there's really no need to put a template for all on the articles. Please remove them. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:37, 8 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Gerda,
My approach has been as follows:
1) Identify articles that are underdeveloped or of below-average quality.
2) Check if in other languages the article is considerably more developed. I found that it does not necessarily have to be in the native language of the subject (see Josef Strauss and it's Japanese version)
I understand too that top templates are a bit distracting, sorry if it caused any incovenience.
I plan to work on improving some of them, but i also wanted to tag them so that the community was aware of the opportunity for improvement.
What would be a more appropiate way to do that? I'll revert the tags myself if they seem excessive in some cases.
Maybe:
-Use template only if the non-english article is much more developed AND is in the native language of the subject.
-For the other cases, perhaps just add a topic on the talk page of the article informing of the situation. Maybe also list this articles somewhere in Wikipedia:WikiProject Composers (if it's a composer) although I'm not sure where the most suitable place would be...
Thanks for being so helpful, as always. Gor1995 (talk) 10:08, 8 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for explaining. In some sense, all our articles are works in progress, and that is understood without tagging and listing. If I was you, I'd not top-tag any of them. A talk page note seems better, and/or a note on Classical music, - if you think something is needed at all. You could just silently expand what you think is missing. To expect the average reader to translate from Japanese looks strange to me, and to send them to a Greek stub for an Italian person whose English article is not bad even more so. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:45, 8 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Gor1995! Thanks for thanking me (haha) for my recent (albeit incomplete) expansion of List of compositions by Jean Sibelius. How have we never crossed paths before now? Anyway, I took the opportunity to poke around and admire some of your recent work on classical music topics. Keep it up! ~ Silence of Järvenpää 18:03, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Silence of Järvenpää, thank you for thanking me for thanking you :)

Johann Nepomuk Hummel

[edit]

I wasn't disputing that the section needed a citation, but putting the {{ character at the start of the paragraph was causing the text to display with lines in between. I've moved the {{ character to the end. Alternatively, much or even all of the paragraph could be removed as it seems a bit speculative. merlinVtwelve (talk) 20:35, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I totally agree with you, that paragraph is a bit of a mess...
That's how Template:Citation needed span works though: " [...] Unlike the template {{citation needed}}, this template attaches explicitly to a portion of text, for example one or more specific sentences, by surrounding the text with the template. This is especially useful for flagging a block of multiple facts or multiple sentences as needing citation..."
I agree with you that the format was a bit disruptive... I edited the page once again to apply the proper template. Regards -- Gor1995 𝄞 21:26, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I found a source for him performing at Beethoven's memorial. I'll see if anything else can be sourced. I took out the 'self-confidence' sentence for now. Seems like someone's speculation, unless it can be sourced somehow. merlinVtwelve (talk) 21:57, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Great! Thanks for improving the article -- Gor1995 𝄞 22:03, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Additional names for list of burial places

[edit]

Dear Gor1995, once again many thanks for the inspiration from your list of burial places of classical musicians! When I took the picture of Joan Sutherland's grave at Clarens cemetery the other day, I also made photos of other graves of prominent folks. Amongst them were the ones of Joseph Szigeti and his son-in-law Nikita Magaloff, who no doubt would qualify for the list with regard to their prominence. However, I think I am not good at creating new slots in the table and therefore appreciate if you were willing to do that. I remember that I have also taken photos of graves of other prominent classical musicians in Switzerland and beyond, which should likewise qualify and I could alert you to. Best regards, RomanDeckert (talk) 17:54, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Roman! I’d be more than happy to help add Szigeti and Magaloff to the list. Please do share any other photos or names you think should be included. Your contributions are incredibly valuable and greatly appreciated. Regards -- Gor1995 𝄞 22:42, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Walton

[edit]

Thanks for your thanks! The bust was frightful but the enlarged 1926 image isn't great and I hope you or another editor can find a better free image. (If only mobile phones with cameras had existed when I encountered Walton in the audience at the Festival Hall on 4 July 1976, he immaculate in white tuxedo but rather less slim than in 1926.) Tim riley talk 14:07, 6 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I'll keep an eye out for a better-quality image... Also thanks for the subsequent improvements of the article and for sharing the anecdote about the encounter! I imagine it must have been memorable seeing him in person. -- Gor1995 𝄞 14:18, 6 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Outline draft tracker

[edit]

Hey,

Here's a page I created for tracking outline drafts, that shows the date of the latest edit for each.

Drafts that haven't been edited in 6 months get deleted. This list lets us see if any drafts are getting close to the 6-month danger date. Once an edit is made to an outline draft, the date for it in this list automatically updates.

Wikipedia:WikiProject Outlines/Draft tracker.

I hope you find it useful.

Composers timeline spacing

[edit]

I know you experimented with it, but now there's a big space before the overview, is this possible to fix this? Thanks. Wikieditor662 (talk) 16:07, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The template ({{Composers by era}}) was overlapping with the Overview section, making less space for the image and forcing the user to scroll horizontally a lot to see the full timeline. I just thought this was more accessible for the reader, even though i agree with you that the extra blank space is not very nice. One option could be to expand the lead section so that blank space dissapears. If you think that the blank space is not worth fixing the overlapping issue, feel free to delete {{Clear}} and leave it as it was before. Thanks — Gor1995 𝄞 16:49, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Would expanding the lead section fix both the giant space and the long scrolling issue? Wikieditor662 (talk) 17:14, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I exemplified 3 different options in this sandbox: User:Gor1995/sandbox13#
Hope that makes it clear! Cheers — Gor1995 𝄞 21:18, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for making those sandboxes, they help present our options.
Perhaps we should post it to the discussion and see what other people think will be the best choice? Wikieditor662 (talk) 21:46, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you really want other editor's opinions you could try discussing it on the article's talk page or somewhere like Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Classical music. In my opinion, it's a small change and it's not controversial, so just be bold and edit whatever you think it's best. — Gor1995 𝄞 22:10, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, it is a small change and the problem is not about being bold, it's that all 3 options have a slight disadvantage. However since a decision has to be made I think we should bring it back to the way it was (without the space) for two reasons:
1) I read somewhere that if a decision can't be made, you should go with the conservative side (meaning leaving it the way it was before the edit)
2) Users seeing it not cut off can be overwhelmed by seeing so many of these names at once
What are your thoughts? Wikieditor662 (talk) 23:03, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Good points, fine by me, go ahead and bring it back the way it was :) — Gor1995 𝄞 23:20, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiproject

[edit]

I am considering creating a wiki project dedicated to improving the quality for the articles of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven.

They are major figures in history who have significantly influenced music. They are also the most well known composers, meaning getting other people to join the project probably won't be impossible.

Their articles are good, but could certainly be better, mainly when it comes to citations, phrasing, and objectivity.

If I were to create this project, would you be interested in joining? You don't have to make heavy edits, just helping out a little here and there would be enough.

Thank you. Wikieditor662 (talk) 03:04, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thank you for considering me, but at this moment I must decline the invitation. Currently I'm not looking to engage in expanding specific articles. I contribute to Wikipedia whenever I have the available time and interest, and that changes a lot from time to time. When i do, i mainly patrol changes in some classical music articles and sometimes i create new ones that i'm interested in.
Anyways, i don't think it would be appropiate to create a whole new wikiproject for that. WP Classical music and WP Composers are not that crowded and would be enough to discuss improvements in those articles. At most, a task force could be considered, but those sometimes seem a bit redundant too (see Haydn and Mozart task force/#Too many WikiProjects?). Cheers — Gor1995 𝄞 10:18, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose you're right, thank you.
I do think that the quality of most of the articles about composers is unfortunate. It's also weird how some lesser known composers (like Berlioz) have great articles while the biggest composers (Mozart, beethoven, bach, etc.) are often missing citations and are worded in an argumentative / opinionated way.
But I suppose you're right, going on to these bigger projects and asking for help about one person at a time may be a better option, hopefully enough people will help. Cheers to you too. Wikieditor662 (talk) 14:38, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Franz Liszt

[edit]

Please explain why you removed the Spurling book from External links of Franz Liszt. You wrote, "rm duplicate external link, already in Internet Archive general search." What is "Internet Archive general search"? I don't see the Spurling book anywhere in Franz Liszt. Thanks. Maurice Magnus (talk) 10:18, 18 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! As you can see, there is already this item in the external links section: "Works by or about Franz Liszt at the Internet Archive". Listing "archive.org" links to individual books seems redundant and unnecessary, there are endless books that could be linked. Regards — Gor1995 𝄞 11:05, 18 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
All right, but the Internet Archive on Liszt is so extensive and mixes books and recordings as to be practically useless. "Find on page" doesn't even work. But I guess that there is no good way to single out the most valuable items for separate listing. Maurice Magnus (talk) 11:20, 18 September 2024 (UTC) Actually, there is a good way (but I am not going to do it): create a Further reading section and list the leading books on Liszt. Maurice Magnus (talk) 11:22, 18 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe a further reading section could work, even though i'm not sure if a fiction book would be one of the leading books to be included in Liszt's biographical article. — Gor1995 𝄞 12:08, 18 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
