Meghan Trainor

Hi MaranoFan, regarding your edit here, I used "affects" correctly; one of its meanings is "to start to wear or do something in order to make people admire or respect you" (see here). I've never heard of "affectates" and neither has Cambridge University Press. The instance of that you added is superfluous; it conveys no meaning in that context. I won't be reverting though. Cheers, and good luck for your planned FA nom. :) Baffle☿gab 02:52, 23 June 2020 (UTC)

WikiCup 2020 July newsletter

The third round of the 2020 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it into the fourth round each had at least 353 points (compared to 68 in 2019). It was a highly competitive round, and a number of contestants were eliminated who would have moved on in earlier years. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with one featured article, 28 good articles and 17 DYKs, amassing 1836 points
  • Botswana The Rambling Man , with 1672 points gained from four featured articles and seventeen good articles, plus reviews of a large number of FACs and GAs
  • England Gog the Mild, a first time contestant, with 1540 points, a tally built largely on 4 featured articles and related bonus points.

Between them, contestants managed 14 featured articles, 9 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 152 good articles, 136 DYK entries, 55 ITN entries, 65 featured article candidate reviews and 221 good article reviews. Additionally, Denmark MPJ-DK added 3 items to featured topics and 44 to good topics. Over the course of the competition, contestants have completed 710 good article reviews, in comparison to 387 good articles submitted for review and promoted. These large numbers are probably linked to a GAN backlog drive in April and May, and the changed patterns of editing during the COVID-19 pandemic. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. I have now restored the timed text files that you created and I deleted. After so much time I don't know whether deleting them was just a mistake, or whether at the time I knew of some clear justification, but it doesn't seem to be a big enough deal to worry about, so I have given the benefit of the doubt. Opinion

Hi MaranoFan! I thought I should ask your opinion on this since you are quite an experienced editor here. I have been expanding song articles for GAs on more or less a regular basis since June this year. I usually work on BTS articles and once I complete expanding an article fully, I see the corresponding wiki page in Italian is also updated (using translated prose from the english wiki page). I'm currently working on "Spring Day" in my sandbox and I haven't moved any part of the expanded chunks to the main English wikipedia page yet. However, yesterday I noticed that the Italian wiki had already been updated using the prose and info that I've worked on in my sandbox. It is bothering me because I feel its unfair to kind of copy stuff directly from my "sandbox" to update a page (even though that is on Italian wiki). I don't know if it's right to approach the editor regarding this and I'm also not aware if this generally happens across other articles, so I thought of asking your opinion. Should I confront the editor regarding this? Thank you for taking your time to read this and I really appreciate your response. --Ashleyyoursmile! 14:03, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

Yes, Ashleyyoursmile, if your content is being copied verbatim without attribution then you need to bring it up with the editor. They aren't permitted to do this without attribution and/or permission.--NØ 03:38, 17 August 2020 (UTC)

Lips Are Movin

Hey, I can provide some help with prose concerns, though I am not certain that I would be able to handle all (I'm not an experienced FA editor after all). Probably better to consult a volunteer listed at PR for deeper instructions, but I promise to keep involved with the article with the issues that I pointed out, (talk) 05:26, 21 August 2020 (UTC)

Thank you so much for the offer. You also provided a review for "All About That Bass" which I will be taking cues from. I just feel like I'm not as emotionally invested in the Lips article as I was in Meghan Trainor; so I'm not sure if I'm willing to go through the hassles to make it an FA. But the silver lining is I wasn't too hurt by your oppose. :) Honestly, FA is one of those things that lost its shiny thing factor once I got one, but it is a lot of work.--NØ 05:43, 21 August 2020 (UTC)

WikiCup 2020 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with 865 points being required to qualify for the final round, nearly twice as many points as last year. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants with 598 and 605 points being eliminated, and all but two of the contestants who reached the final round having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • Free Hong Kong Bloom6132, with 1478 points gained mainly from 5 featured lists, 12 DYKs and 63 in the news items;
  • IndonesiaHaEr48 with 1318 points gained mainly from 2 featured articles, 5 good articles and 8 DYKs;
  • England Lee Vilenski with 1201 points mainly gained from 2 featured articles and 10 good articles.

Between them, contestants achieved 14 featured articles, 14 featured lists, 2 featured pictures, 87 good articles, 90 DYK entries, 75 ITN entries, 95 featured article candidate reviews and 81 good article reviews. Congratulations to all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. WikiCup 2020 November newsletter

The 2020 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round going down to the wire. Our new Champion is England Lee Vilenski (submissions), the runner-up last year, who was closely followed by England Gog the Mild (submissions). In the final round, Lee achieved 4 FAs and 30 GAs, mostly on cue sport topics, while Gog achieved 3 FAs and 15 GAs, mostly on important battles and wars, which earned him a high number of bonus points. Botswana The Rambling Man (submissions) was in third place with 4 FAs and 8 GAs on football topics, with New York (state) Epicgenius (submissions) close behind with 19 GAs and 16 DYK's, his interest being the buildings of New York.

The other finalists were Gondor Hog Farm (submissions), Indonesia HaEr48 (submissions), Somerset Harrias (submissions) and Free Hong Kong Bloom6132 (submissions). The final round was very productive, and besides 15 FAs, contestants achieved 75 FAC reviews, 88 GAs and 108 GAN reviews. Altogether, Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!

All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2021 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. WP:SINGLE?

Hello there! I was wondering if you could help push the discussion regarding 'what is a single' further. The way things are is making it really difficult for editors to reach a consensus on what's really a single and there should be more specific aspects to determinate whether a song is a single or not. I think this discussion will be extremely beneficial to Wikipedia. Thanks in advance. — Artmanha (talk) 14:06, 11 November 2020 (UTC)

Artmanha, WP:SINGLE? is extremely outdated. By my understanding, modern-day singles are characterised by release to radio stations. Radio is the main format for the consumption of pop music in 2020. One can easily gauge this distinction by looking at recent eras; Like the Future Nostalgia era, where "Don't Start Now", "Break My Heart", and "Levitating" were clearly the only singles released in the US, even though songs like the title track and "Physical" received a separate release on digital platforms. If you do raise this issue at WT:SONG or the essay's talk page I will make sure to participate.--NØ 14:54, 11 November 2020 (UTC)
I agree. A lot of people tend to believe a song is a single because one source called it a single. Some pop culture sources don't distinguish whether the song is an actual single or simply a song released by the artist and end up calling it a single. Plus, we have got to point another issue and that is that countries like Italy tend to release random songs on the radio that aren't necessarily a single. Another things I think its worth pointing out is that a) the physical versions of albums and singles is a thing again, but that alone doesn't prove that song is a single, as promotional singles are also released in physical formats; b) if an artist has a certain way of promoting their singles, and a song does not receive the same treatment, it should sound as an alert that that song is probably not a single, though few exceptions may occur. What do you think? I'll be sure to find some time soon to raise the discussion at WT:SONG. Thanks once again. — Artmanha (talk) 15:16, 11 November 2020 (UTC)
Hi I was reviewing Mood Ring and had noticed you both were questioning the status of the song and if it should be labeled as a single or not and I was just about to send a message on @MaranoFan: talk page until I noticed you both were questioning the status of most songs that are being released randomly. My one issue is why are we labeling songs as singles because some random radio station in Italy called EarOne played it on their station??? That’s my biggest concern and issue, I think something obviously needs to change with that. Especially due to the fact actual fans would know if this certain song was or wasn’t a single. I absolutely wouldn’t classify some random song as a full blown single because some certain country played it on their station, probably only once as well. Also without any announcement from the singer themselves. Just my opinion. Promo single would be more appropriate. Supposedly Urban Outfitters is releasing an outtake from Britney Spears’ Glory called “Swimming In The Stars” on vinyl. They are labeling it as a “limited release” which would violate Template:Infobox album. I had changed it when someone attempted to add it in the box. I agree that WP:SINGLE? also needs updated with proper information.

Meghan Trainor on Main Page

Hi MaranoFan! I hope you're doing well. I was pleasantly surprised to see Meghan Trainor on the main page today, as we don't often see pop culture go all the way to the bronze star, let alone featured topic! Job well done. I wish I could get to your level of achievement someday! I'm sad to see that you've retired, but I totally understand, as I previously was inactive for several years before returning to Wikipedia. I hope that you're at least here today to see your prize on the Main Page. If not, I'm sure you'll figure it out eventually. :-) Edge3 (talk) 02:56, 22 December 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for your kind words, Edge3! I have indeed been fighting to improve Meghan Trainor articles since 2014, and it has been an uphill battle. Good to see it pay off for our readers.--NØ 07:11, 22 December 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for the article "about American singer-songwriter Meghan Trainor, who is often erroneously thought of as an "overnight success" or "one-hit wonder". This article dispels these myths and depicts the long journey Trainor had to fame, including three independently released albums, a family band and writing for countless other artists."! - I always love particularly to see articles as TFA where I contributed to a review. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:05, 22 December 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for your encouragement and motivation throughout the FAC process and beyond it, Gerda! With the way things are going, maybe 2021 will be another constructive year for us on Wikipedia due to continuing lockdowns ;) NØ 09:01, 22 December 2020 (UTC)

A request

Hi MaranoFan, I hope you are keeping well. Apologies for posting on your talk page since the template above reads retired, but I'd still like to leave this message. I was working on Harry Styles discography in hopes to bring to a FL. While going through the list of current FLs, I came across Meghan Trainor discography, and noticed that you've done an amazing job with the article and brought it to FL. I just wanted to drop by and ask if you'd be willing to take a look at the current prose and suggest if it needs improvement to meet the FL criterion. If you need me to open a peer review, I'd be glad to to do that. I would really appreciate your advice. Please disregard this message if you are busy and won't find time to leave comments; I'll understand. Hope to see more of your remarkable work on this platform. Thank you. :) --Ashleyyoursmile! 08:50, 22 January 2021 (UTC)

No worries. I had a look and it looks great. If you've already referred to the Trainor list then it should be up to par. I will make sure to participate in the FLC.--NØ 10:00, 22 January 2021 (UTC)
That's great. Thank you very much. :) Ashleyyoursmile! 13:49, 22 January 2021 (UTC)
And I have nominated it. I'll appreciate comments from your behalf. Thank you. :) Ashleyyoursmile! 15:52, 22 January 2021 (UTC)

AFD needing comments

Hi, MaranoFan. An AFD discussion has started for Serious (Gwen Stefani song). I hope you could leave some comments if you are interested. Thank you. (talk) 03:02, 24 February 2021 (UTC)

Hey , I'm not sure if it is a good idea for me to become involved with this particular discussion. The user that wrote that article already sprung up to a deletion discussion I started recently and magically came up with a twofold expansion of the article hours later, after never having edited it earlier. I am too scared to recruit another stalker given my history on this website. Hope that's understandable. It does seem "Serious" is headed to a keep outcome though and my vote probably won't make much of a difference.--NØ 03:26, 24 February 2021 (UTC)
I completely understand. Getting involved in AFDs in like unconsciously inviting enemies to your territory... but regardless, it's your decision after all. Best, (talk) 04:00, 24 February 2021 (UTC)
Tell me about it! This one about a made-up Gwen Stefani tour never fails to give me a few laughs.--NØ 04:16, 24 February 2021 (UTC)

WikiCup 2021 March newsletter

Round 1 of the competition has finished; it was a high-scoring round with 21 contestants scoring more than 100 points. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2, with 55 contestants qualifying. You will need to finish among the top thirty-two contestants in Round 2 if you are to qualify for Round 3. Our top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • New York (state) Epicgenius led the field with a featured article, nine good articles and an assortment of other submissions, specialising on buildings and locations in New York, for a total of 945 points.
  • Republic of Venice Bloom6132 was close behind with 896 points, largely gained from 71 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
  • Scotland ImaginesTigers, who has been editing Wikipedia for less than a year, was in third place with 711 points, much helped by bringing League of Legends to featured article status, exemplifying how bonus points can boost a contestant's score.
  • Rwanda Amakuru came next with 708 points, Kigali being another featured article that scored maximum bonus points.
  • Ktin, new to the WikiCup, was in fifth place with 523 points, garnered from 15 DYKs and 34 "In the news" items.
  • Botswana The Rambling Man scored 511 points, many from featured article candidate reviews and from football related DYKs.
  • Gog the Mild, last year's runner-up, came next with 498 points, from a featured article and numerous featured article candidate reviews.
  • Hog Farm, at 452, scored for a featured article, four good articles and a number of reviews.
  • United States Le Panini, another newcomer to the WikiCup, scored 438 for a featured article and three good articles.
  • England Lee Vilenski, last year's champion, scored 332 points, from a featured article and various other sport-related topics.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. In Round 1, contestants achieved eight featured articles, three featured lists and one featured picture, as well as around two hundred DYKs and twenty-seven ITNs. They completed 97 good article reviews, nearly double the 52 good articles they claimed. Contestants also claimed for 135 featured article and featured list candidate reviews. There is no longer a requirement to mention your WikiCup participation when undertaking these reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article candidate, a featured process, or something else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Leave the Door Open move

Per the emerging consensus at RM/TR[1] I moved the disambiguation page to the base name. If you believe that the song is the primary topic, I recommend opening a requested move on the talk page. However, it is probably best to wait until the long term significance is more obvious. (t · c) buidhe 19:43, 6 March 2021 (UTC)

I believe that's the best thing to do for now. Thanks for the message.--NØ 19:59, 6 March 2021 (UTC)

GAN

Hey, I hope you are doing well. I was wondering if you could take up the GAN for Cornelia Street (song)? As I plan to retire in the near future I want my current nominations to finish asap. Sorry for bothering you this way, and hope you're having a great weekend. (talk) 04:30, 14 March 2021 (UTC)

Definitely. Love this song too! And I would post the customary dissuasion about retirement but I have taken breaks from this site in the past and they were definitely good for my mental health. So I say go for it if it's something you would like.--NØ 04:43, 14 March 2021 (UTC)

An automated process has detected that when you recently edited All About That Bass, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Nasty Girl.
